Wes, I agree that the ability to comprehend jokes is a pretty accurate way to measure one's fluency. However, it doesn't cover all bases because some native speakers simply have no sense of humor. One prominent physicist, a Noble laureate (not divulging the name just for you to have fun guessing), has once quipped that learning English is easy since even the most inane Englishmen are nonetheless fluent in English.

I personally find British humor is a bit more varied than American. I may be wrong, but It feels like most of the American jokes are based on double meaning or double interpretation of words and phrases. Its always a pretty simple pattern like: statement , expectation , confusion, tension, release. Similar to pop music harmony that goes unexpected way at the end. And most of the time relatively easy to understand if you know the words and meanings. I wish i could translate jokes from my native language into English, but they are deeply relying on culture and language nuances, the meaning will just fade away.

Hi Takayo. Glad you enjoyed the lesson. Jokes are another way to challenge yourself. As for that joke, it would interpreting it as "I haven't (done something).' (e.g. I haven't climbed Mt. Everest.). Therefore, it someone says, "I haven't slept for ten day,' you could interpret it as 'I have never tried to sleep consecutively for 10 days because it would be difficult to do.' 👍
