I think it is shocking for Black people from African countries because you are not accustomed to dealing with the issue of Race. Sadly as a Black women from the United States, I would be surprised if there were no encounters similar to what you had with that child. He is a child with lack of exposure. You handled it well. Hopefully you will be able to see that family again and continue the conversation. You educated the mother by telling her we "work" and we can be a "lawyer". Small steps to tearing down walls.

Yes they're children but it also shows they have limited exposure to outsiders in the remote/countryside of a homogeneous society. Even the mother seemed quite ignorant as well. A child brought up around more diversity would surely never say such a thing. Its definitely more about environment than the fact that they're kids in this case.

@@ucheobuekwe That kind of language from kids is what they were taught by adults. The adult standing right there and not trying to correct them tells you everything you need to know. What she said about her house and how you instead complimented the house was very nice but she didn't even say thank you. You're a sweet person and black people definitely need thick skin in this day and age (something I thought I would never have to say in 2024) especially when visiting foreign countries. You have a beautiful soul, lovely skin, and a sweet smile. Enjoy the rest of your trip.

in my village in Kenya we make wooden houses as well since we are in the highlands and its very cold. so from the foundation to a quarter height is made of stone to keep off termites then the rest of it is wood then the fireplace is made of stone of course. We also paint the wood black with a tar mixture to keep off the termites. I saw inside the room and it looks just like inside a typical room in our village even the beds and the bedding😁. For the little boy , he's just a product of his environment, he lacks exposure and mostly such mindsets are typical in people who are raised to think in one particular way, it is sad that at such a young age even his choice of a marriage partner has been influenced. Unfortunately it is a village mindset, that is the downside to villages...village life is really calm, natural and easy living but singular mindset is usually the downside...

I would not care what the child said. He is parroting the ignorant words and attitudes of the adults around him. You were very gracious when you said that the woman's battered house was good. Graciousness is something that the woman and her family have yet to learn. Although their words may have been disheartening, you handled the situation with restraint. elegance and grace. One day that family's opinions and attitudes may change or they may never change, but the important thing is not to let it change You. Just found your channel today. I'm a Chinese Canadian man who knows a bit of Tai-Kradai language. And you look 70-80% similar to a Tai-Kradai girl from Yunnan that I met on Douyin. She works as a model there and I really like her, but I know she'll never be my girlfriend and I'll never take her to Canada. Those kids are so ignorant and rude, please ignore them. The vast majority of Chinese are friendly to foreigners, and I hope that this rather unfortunate experience won't change your perception about Chinese people. Enjoy your stay in China, cheers!

Even though when choosing Chinese girls, Chinese boys would consider character, values, income, family, education etc first, then when it comes to how his girlfriend should look like, good looking, nice curve figure and light skin are some popular choice. However, in TV dating shows, African girls have been very popular. African girls have unique and attractive points compared with Chinese girls, they are usually hard working, have longer and thin limes, and attractive female body shape compared to Asian girls.

The child wonder about he never saw, like you wonder when you were told houses around you are made with wood. The we have to consider that pale skin, in some area, mean you are noble as only who worked in the fields had burned skin. For this reason in rural area a dark skin is value as sign if modest economic situation. You reacted right, explaining, speaking. The family seems very modest and rural. Do they not teach human anatomy in schools? Human anatomy gives a thorough explanation on why some skin tones are darker. It even explains the fact that white/pale skin is a genetic mutation.

Uche nice to see you again ❤️🤓The children and many adults know very little Geography. So when people in China or anywhere else ask about your 'blackness' teach them a little human geography. There are 5 major races in the world: Mongoloids eg. Chinese, Japanese etc., Caucasoids eg. Europeans, Arabs, North Indians etc., Negroids eg Nigerians, African Americans etc , Australoid eg Aborigines, Papuans, Melanesian s etc. So the black/dark skinned races are Negroids and Australoid Others have shades that go from pale white to pinkish to brownish and pale yellow. I don't think the child was being evil. Light skin is seen as beautiful in their culture. I think there was an opportunity to simply say "in Africa I can find husband easily and even here in China some people find me attractive". The mother wasn't at fault either, she grew up like her kids, you are the first black person they've met, so of course they have questions that are rooted in ignorance. I was surprised you didn't correct them but I guess you were so shocked.

He probably learned that from colorism. Where I live in Asia, bleaching agents are in everything. I believe it is a nuanced phenomenon, but we can only learn from each other. I hope the children are able to meet more foreigners of diverse backgrounds.

I would say that you should expect the unexpected at all times as a foreigner in China. Why? Because for many of them, its their first time seeing someone of your complexion, especially for those living in rural communities. Kids will say crazy things anyway.

You could've handled that better by educating them that there's different types of people outside of China and that there isn't anything wrong with your skin tone. You could've said that people that look like you also get married all of the time or have boyfriend and girlfriends. You lacked explanations and educating.
