Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life

Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life

10 жыл бұрын

COUPLE #1: Irene Schunegger, housewife / Truman "Pinky" Tomlin, who sings his hit song ""The Object Of My Affection""
COUPLE #2: Nancy "Tootsie" Outz, stewardess for United Airlines / Frank Sampson, tree surgeon. This is not the show with the famous line, "Tell me, Doctor, have you ever fallen out of a patient?") But there is a similar line, where Groucho suggests the doctor might be hung from one of his patients for his endless punning (seriously, the guy is more relentless than Chico).

Great show. 'The Object of My Affection' is one of those songs you can't get out of your head once you've heard it. Pinky Tomlin made a number of movies, some with Toby Wing, who was one of my favorites.

It was so cute when Tootsie got excited and said "Isn't that grand? Isn't he wonderful?" when the duck appeared. Then with her charming accent later saying "But I don't care too much about goin' on a picnic and bringin'' my own lunch." I couldn't agree more. She was adorable.

Love music from the 30's, including Al Jolson (my favorite is Hallelujah I'm a Bum Again). The songs back then seemed so sweet and simple. I was tickled to find a song too by Bing Crosby (in a younger voice) when he was a crooner in the 30's (all on YT).

I've done that last joke a couple hundred times over the last 45 years. I saw a magician take it up a level -- he started with the same base of the joke is Groucho indicated but didn't reveal the number at that point he told everyone to select a country that started with the letter that corresponded with the number they had iin the alphabet:: 1=A, 2=B, 3=C and so on; then he told them to pick the next letter in the alphabet and to select an animal that goes with that letter that could be found in that country then he told them to move two more letters down the alphabet to pick a color for that animal that could be found in that country then he told them that the answer was a gray/grey elephant in Denmark.!!

I'm guessing this one had a little bit of rehearsal -- it's very unlikely the studio band would have known a song that was over 20 years old by that time, and had an arrangement like that up and ready to go. Not all of these encounters were as ad-libbed and spontaneous as they let on.

David Whiteis - Only some of the visitors were asked to appear, especially if they did something different, or special, that Groucho could get his teeth into. George always knew, Groucho, only at times. He seldom knew who was there, until they walked out, as Groucho was best with a spontaneous joke. A couple of times he said that he knew certain, real celebrities were there, and it wasn't as funny of a meeting. George mentions at times that certain contestants were selected by audience voting.

Hearing Mr. Tomlin sing his song is, for me, a great find. I love it when I come across any sort of 'historical matches' of author, or composer, relating to their work. As for the 2nd couple, Tootsie is just a truly charming Southern girl. And Frank Sampson is Really quite a Hunk' with his apparent over 6' strapping built. And, unless my 'Gaydar' is off kilter; he is either Gay, or Trade. Lol, his avoidance of the 'marriage' question? And as a Gay Youth, in the late 50's, a 'hand-jingling-coins-in-the-pocket'; was one of those subtle and furtive 'gay-signals', that was utilized. If I were in Beverly Hills, I'd plant a Grove of Trees, just to have him trim a few. Haaa...
