Joe Gold, Most Perfect Man 1956, was founder and original owner of Gold's Gym. He later co-owned World Gym International with long-time friend Gordon Mitchell. Over the years, the Gold's Gym chain increased to 43 in the United States and 25 in foreign countries. Gold's Gym was made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger, during his bodybuilding days. When 'Pumping Iron' (1977) came out, the original Gold's Gym in Venice Beach, CA, became a mecca for bodybuilders. He sold the gym in 1970 to join the merchant marine. Under new owners, Gold's Gym became a franchise operation with hundreds of sites. At the time of his death in 2004, Gold's Gym International had 2.5 million members.

I don't know if the talk show format hadn't been invented yet or what, but Groucho definitely should have been the first person to have a talk show. No one cared about the winning money part, they tuned in because Groucho was the most interesting person on television, and I think he should have been in the place Carson was as the king of late night, if someone had just thought of that back in the 50's

Leno was ok, but Fallon is real dumb in trying to be funny. Carson was the man!! He was so funny when i was a kid watching him before he retired i almost fell out of my bed alnost one time laughing so hard! RIP the king of Monologue! Btw Groucho was funny, who cares if it's B&W TV

In addition, I'd like to know if you recall a little Chinese (or Chinese-American) girl who was a child prodigy at the piano. Thanks.

519DJW I don't recall that specific episode, sorry. I can vouch that I haven't posted it yet, or I'd remember it well enough from having to rewatch the shows to write up the descriptions. It's either in the last batch of 30 or so unposted shows or I don't have it. There are two good books on YBYL, one "written" by Groucho (really written by Hector Arce, as Groucho was quite old by this point) called "The Secret Word Is Groucho": www.amazon.com/The-secret-word-Groucho-Marx/dp/0399116907/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403938796&sr=8-1&keywords=the+secret+word+is+groucho And a relatively recent one by director Robert Dwan called "As Long As They're Laughing", which is an excellent book with a terrible, terrible title. www.amazon.com/As-Long-Theyre-Laughing-Groucho/dp/1887664661/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403938812&sr=8-1&keywords=as+long+as+they%27re+laughing I highly recommend either. The Dwan book is better for academic, background information (though with plenty of funny stories sprinkled along the way), the Groucho book more purely entertaining.
@519djw6
@519djw6 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the links to to the books! I will at least purchase the one by Robert Dwan. I think it would be wonderful if as many people who are still around who appeared on this show could share their memories of the occasion--or failing that, their children, friends or relatives, etc. (These comments also go for "You Bet Your Life," which I think was, along with "You Bet Your Life," the best-quality quiz-show of the 50s and early 60s.

519DJW Did you mean to compare YBYL with "what's My Line"? You must have typed YBYL twice by accident. There have been occasional comments on the videos already from descendants of the folks on the shows, always a real treat to see them. One woman, the daughter of a contestant on this show, wrote a blog post sharing her father's experience as a contestant (linked in the video description): You Bet Your Life #54-26 Dueling zoomerangs; MLB Pitcher Bob Lemon ('Floor', Mar 10, 1955)
