Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life

The title is a spoiler, but I figure it's okay for a show that's 54 years old. The guy in the first round became famous for a great deal more than impersonating Arab Princes. Bill Blatty was, in fact, William Peter Blatty, future author of "The Exorcist".
COUPLE #1: Arlene Di Fraia / Prince Something-Or-Other
COUPLE #2: Margaret Nicholson / Simon Argevitch, Shoe salesman
NOTE: The opening is missing from this copy.

My Aunt Beverly typed the manuscript for him. (way before computers). The Exorcist ... She was a professional typist. She was staying with us, while my parents were on vacation. My younger brother, who was around 13yrs old, was reading it while, she was typing it. Couple years later, the movie came out.

Rick Roscoe Well, Groucho himself said during the show that he'd caught on pretty quickly, and I don't see any reason not to believe him. He was just playing along for the sake of making the segment work. And it was pretty entertaining-- knowing who Blatty turned out to be later just makes it all the more interesting.

In 1982 Simon Argevitch was mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records for whistling, humming, singing and doing bird calls while smoking 17 cigars at once. He died of a heart attack in 1986 at age 71. He also appeared on Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show", and he stumped the panel on "I've Got A Secret". He would often add diversity to his act by stuffing a salad fork, a dinner fork, a knife and three types of spoons into his mouth.

The Young Lady Answering the Questions in this Episode about the American Presidents, is not only Charming, but an absolute revelation as to her most impressive Knowledge on her chosen topic. I doubt strongly that whether people be Male or Female in the present age, that any of us could do this in this era without resorting to searching the internet to come up with such answers as well as this. We are being made dumber by the day, by being made so dependent on our devices, and not being as dependent on our Own Brains as this young lady is seen here... Thank you Yet again, for another GEM from "YOU BET YOUR LIFE". I find this Show to be Better than Anything on Free-To-Air Television screens these days, it shows good human values, developing relationships in a very brief time frame and people getting along just fine, and it displays many endearing qualities with people from all kinds of backgrounds, and their shared history while they were with some of us during the 1950's while they were on this planet. May I thank our Host here for posting these episodes here, they are an EDUCATION CLASS to us all in how to be better WORLD CITIZENS to one another ... xxx = my Kisses & Thanks to You ...

I liked your comments. I to see there was much more togetherness in this time period than I have been taught. I noticed that Groucho was surprised Margaret was smart and pretty. I feel the internet is a tool that can increase knowledge at a faster rate, people can choose to use this tool to watch great debates from 1950 or play angry birds...it is not the tool that is dumbing us down it is how we use the tool and what we focus our attentions on; once we begin to extricate ourselves from the deceptions and distractions of the world we will begin to once again strengthen our intellectual abilities.

I find this show to be very entertaining, too, far more-so than anything today. There are times, though, when Groucho can be just plain mean or inappropriate, such as asking overweight guests their weight, kissing women in front of their husbands, teaming up with male contestants to kiss a female, and others. Some women on his show looked incredibly uncomfortable. ...but his wit was out of this world. When he isn't being disgusting, he can really make me laugh hard. Sometimes, too, the very inappropriate things he says and asks make me laugh, even if just because I'm mindblown that he'd say these things.

Throughout history, both naively and - to a degree - correctly, folks have conveyed the identical sentiments about preceding generations. Check out Tacitus or Suetonius, ancient scholars, and revel in their complaints about people ruining scenery with graffiti and/or the degeneration of the spoken word.

Bill Blatty, better known as William Peter Blatty who would go on to write The Exorcist. Actually Groucho said he read his book (his first one; an autobiography), so I guess he was just playing along; hard to outpunk Groucho! The 2 won $10,000, I think a record on this show, and in today's money about $85,000, allowing him to quit his day job and become a full time writer. The rest is history! @@nowadayswithandy Groucho was extremely impressed with her, truly smitten, blown away with her extreme knowledge about Presidents that few to none would know. He was impressed to the point of being stymied, never having seen anything like this happen before on his show. He as much said this. Even digging further with 'How in the world do you know these answers?!' Your re-authoring truth into lie is your pride and YOUR arrogance. You obviously have a problem with confident and competent women. The other contestants, the man stole the show in much the same way. But that is OK with you. Be sure to stay out of the way of the women in your life. Don't attack any women as being wrong so you can be right. It doesn't work that way, as much as that would feel good to your ego. You are as wrong about yourself as you are about women. Fix yourself first, and women will not need to improve one bit.

Margaret not only knew her Presidents, but she was quick witted as well. Groucho should have offered her a job!
@truthntelling
@truthntelling 4 жыл бұрын
Imagine Margaret doing George Fennemen's job. She'd be more awake and witty, more spark with Groucho and guests, not as dry and intimidated as George acts. But Groucho would be concerned she would upstage him, or make him appear 2nd fiddle. George wore his submissiveness on his face and stumbled humble whenever Groucho addressed him. Groucho played on that dynamic, and he'd get nowhere with Margaret for the same string pulling. He'd risk hanging himself with it, to the audiences delight, but not to Groucho's chauvinist ego. And Groucho is a chauvinist, brazenly coming on to every single pretty woman that stands ready at the game. He's only partly kidding. Notice when Margaret pulled off the final answer right, he tells her to '"Kiss ME." He is admiring her as superior then insists she submit to him. It's the chauvinistic "You're good and you're mine, I can have you". Like a King choosing a concubine. "You blow me away, now give it to me." I'm no fan of the way he treats women, even in this comedic venue, he overdoes it. This is some man's wife he is ordering to kiss him. Groucho is no prize nor does he hold position to demand that. You can feel that he does it for more than humor. He's using humor as his shield. When men use their power and position, be it in show biz, politics, corporate life, whatever, to tell a woman to pleasure them as a woman, it is to be REFUSED. I wish Margaret had.

Wowzers, Groucho could really come up with some zingers, some of which were prit-tee damn politically INcorrect! Don't know whether it was the work of writers or Groucho adlibbing, but oh, what a joy to be able to say what's on your mind without fear of offending half the damned world.

The producers should have offered Margaret a job. It's the chauvinistic "You're the best and you're mine, I can have you". Like a King choosing a concubine. I'm no fan of the way he treats women, even in this comedic venue, Groucho overdoes it. Her followup remark, that it's in-line with the prize money, so to speak, says she wasn't crazy about the idea. She was painting the kiss as non-sexual. She did it in light of the times, the situation, and her upbringing of exhibiting grace and pleasing manners toward the host, who is also her elder. Her presence on the show as Groucho's side-kick would also get in the way of Grouch's predatory behavior to other women, and the producers must think it a benefit since they didn't tame Groucho as he became worse. It's a man's world, then and now.

Notice that the men replying to my statement prove it true. The male ego that is crude and rude to the female plight is the source of the injustice. They'll laugh it off ("bigger howl") and dismiss it ("it was a different world") because they enjoy it. All that has changed is how men have learned to mask it, given it is no longer as tolerated being flaunted as brazen chauvinism. Boys will be boys - that never grow up or wise up!

I wonder who else has noticed, some of the 1960's episodes show the contestants in their entirety, that is, full length from head to toe. In this episode and intermittently prior, they only show the contestants from the waist up. I wonder why? I thought for sure when Margaret Nicholson came out in the bathing suit prior to the wheel spin that they'd show her from head to toe. I was disappointed that they only showed her from about the waist up as well. I wonder why? Was this a conscious decision by the producers or the cameraman? Anybody else noticed this? Any ideas? I would think they would have strived for consistency.
