Groucho was a brilliant comedian. So sharp and quick witted. Consider the time that this show aired, He was ahead of his time. Brilliant!

@@remessinger Oh, yeah, I think the first joke of his I ever heard (back in 6th grade) was from him talking to a wife and mother of some very large number of kids, and Groucho quips, "Well, I like my cigar too, but I take it out of my mouth every once in a while."

What does it mean to be ahead of one's time? Why is that brilliant?
@ZenGeekDad
@ZenGeekDad 5 жыл бұрын
@@Mkundera If I take your questions as literal, not rhetorical, then being ahead of one's time generally means you demonstrate social values that were not mainstream in your era, but later became adopted widely. Usually this is applied to progressive ideas, like valuing a more inclusive society. In that sense, Groucho was not being ahead of his time at all. He was using innuendo in often clever, surprising ways, which delights a certain sense of humor, but there is nothing socially progressive about it. Brilliance is subjective, of course, but I find his fast wit indicative of a sharp mind, though I admit it could just reflect a lifetime of practicing innuendo as a means of entertaining people, so that he had a stable of themes at the ready to draw upon. Actually, if I had to bet, I would bet on that, since I think exceptionally popular entertainers focus ferociously on their craft, at least from the bios I've seen.

@@ZenGeekDad From the perspective of a being a television comedian, talk show or game show host, I would say that Groucho was ahead of his time. Because of his quick wit and his ability to ad-lib and to cunningly shape sexual innuendo and racy content into his act and present in such a subtle way, Groucho was able to get away with material during the 1950s, that rivaled some of the racy content and witty, adult banter of shows like The Newly Wed Game and The Tonight Show in the 1970s. I'm not saying that Groucho's show equally matched the level of adult humor of those 70s shows, but for a show that spanned the entire decade of the 50s, virtually nobody on television was doing the kind of adult humor that Groucho was getting away with. Yeah, it wasn't exactly high brow or socially progressive content and it certainly wasn't pushing any real comedy boundaries that the stand up comedy club comedians of the time weren't already knocking down, but as far as the very straight laced 1950s TV shows were concerned, Groucho was about as racy as any comedian on TV could get. In this way, one could argue that Groucho was ahead of his time or somewhat cutting edge. I would say that his unscripted, improvised, lively banter and interaction with contestants and audiences was also a cut above what the other scripted, cookie cutter shows of the 50s were doing. You Bet Your Life is still considered to be the first TV show, filmed before a live audience, even though it did not actually air live, because the improvised and adult nature of Groucho's performances, made it necessary to edit the show down from it's longer live version. One thing is for sure, Groucho was an absolute master at ad-libbing and no one on television in the 50s even came close to touching Groucho in that department. So, was the show really ahead of it's time? Yes and no.

I'm 79 now and I used to watch Groucho when I was probably in the 8th or 9th grade. I'm sure a lot of his jokes went over my head, but there's one I will always remember. Groucho replied "well I love my cigars but I take them out once in awhile".

I love Groucho Marx. He was more subtle and more entertaining than many comedians before or since. He could work "blue" without seeming to...no swear words...(ok, I like silly humor the best, the sillier it got, the more hilarious it became...topical humor tends to fade with time, but Groucho is timeless)

Most of his ad-libs were not really ad-libs. They were scripted. Do some research if you do not think this is so. This also goes for Johnny Carson's very funny WHO DO YOU TRUST. All scripted. The jokes(ad-libs)were set up before hand, etc. But very funny anyway. Marx and Carson were two masters. Marx was Carson's first guest in 1962.

1960 Democrats under Kennedy were more Nationalist or just expelled from the Party and their authority de-facto destroyed. The Sexual Liberation/ Revolution, which, started the change in women from feminine to rights warrior freaks. Up until Blair came to power in 1997. Britain was largely Britain, America largely America until Clinton a couples of years prior to Blairism or New Labour. Born in the 1980's or early and you could watch it all unfolding if you was open and awake, I was not until 2016. The I watched American and British Comedy Classics, like Mr. Marx, like On the Buses, Open All Hours, Only Fools and Horses, Minder, the last in my view even if crass was Married with Children and the song wrote by Groucho friend Sammy Khun.

Compare this classic TV show with the crap on the Boob Tube today. First of all, Groucho is funny as hell and he's ad-libbing. Not one sitcom in the history of television can favorably compare, each with their own cadre of one-line "joke" writers. Notice his humor completely lacks political correctness. This helps tremendously with making his jokes laugh-out-loud funny. Lastly, Groucho smoked a cigar throughout every show. Today he would be regarded as a social pariah and would not be allowed to smoke on the air. Well, it used to be a free country, over half a century ago.

The first woman contestant radiates sophistication combined with a sultry sexuality. In my opinion she beats Liz Taylor in the looks and charisma stakes. @1:46 she lobbies back a repost “Promise?” with perfect timing and a subtle flirtatious smile. Also, her hair, dress and comportment are classy. I wonder what happened to her; she could easily have been a star.

the 38 prudes who gave this a thumbs down probably left negative comments, and probably think "SNL" is actually funny. This show ran for a long time, was nominated for seven (7) Emmy's, was in the top 10 shows for 7 of its 11 seasons, which incidentally had roughly 39 episodes per season back then, unlike today's shows that call ten episodes a "season". Many successful stars got exposure on these game shows back in the day. In addition, "YBYL" was deliberately created to showcase Groucho's ad-libbing talents. The game show contest element was more secondary.
@tragicsans
@tragicsans 4 жыл бұрын
Probably think SNL is funny? I'd like to see a statistic justifying that assertion. For the record, SNL is the longest-running series in history (45 years), and has racked 65 Primetime Emmy Awards, 3 Peabody Awards, 3 Writers Guild of America Awards, and more. Not to mention "many successful stars got exposure" on SNL. Moving forward, be wary of how you measure success. While I too find SNL to be a waste of time: funny or not, SNL just wiped the field.

innocent? most of them were forced to be bossed around and if they resisted they were whipped. nobody thought nothing of it either because in order to be a "good wife" you raise the children (without the husbands help) you buy groceries, you do all the housework and even teach the children. what a workload. and they have no choice. even the children were whipped. and apparently to older generations you were raised better that way. violence just leads to trauma. anyone raised that way will never be happy. all the flashbacks of being beaten just for even doing something different. even worse for the women because you cant even wear pants. and if your raped your viewed as worthless and cant get married and if you cant get married your basically casted from society. living back then was mostly easy for men not women and children.

Having interviewed them beforehand, the producers would feed the contestants certain lines or ask them to relate particular stories. Joy Harmon (5:17) got confused between what she was advised to say and how Groucho was responding. (Part of her 'taken-back' response was that Groucho always tried to impress the pretty ones; a partial reflection from long ago in trying to win the attention of his mother, who was super fond of Chico.) Groucho would look offstage to messages displayed on a projector (6:20 and 6:44) to be prompted what questions to ask, without knowing what had been planned, in order to retain some spontaneity. Groucho later used Joy for another show after UBYL. One of the producers was asked years later whether UBYL was ad-libbed or scripted, to which he replied 'yes', meaning both.

The last clip in this sequence was not finished here, but it did finish Groucho's career on the show. It is one of the most racy and classic lines on television - definitely something over the top for the era. What I will say is that it is nice to put a face to the legendary story's participant.
