I came to this country as an immigrant with $800 in my pocket by myself, hardly speaking any English. After working 16-18 hours a day with minimum wage and multiple jobs I saved money and went to college. I invested in myself and I’ve a 6 figure salary now. Within 20 years I became a millionaire by having frugal lifestyle. Nobody helped me to achieve this. I didn’t even know about Dave Ramsey. If I was born in this country or immigrated 10 years earlier I’d have had over $10 million by now. You don’t know how lucky you are that you are a citizen of this great nation. I’m teaching my kids and making them watch Dave’s shows. You are not a victim of anything unless you want to be. Work hard and be smart and this country will pay you back in the long term.

I'm a bleeding heart liberal. Liberal as they come. But I have to agree with Dave on this one. Alot of liberal thinking does lead to a victim mentality. Hate to say it. But it does. At the same point, there's no reason why anyone in this country should retire in poverty. If you have the ability to get out of debt and save, then its on you for no doing that.

Best thing I did when I was in my early 30s was to keep a very accurate record of every purchase (or bill) I paid over a one year period, using a calendar to record these costs. At the end of every day, I would ask my wife what money she spent and then record everything on the calendar . Add it all up at the end of the year. I suddenly realized that we were spending too much on convenience things: Going out to eat and buying snacks at work, rather than cooking at home more and taking more bag lunches to work. My "entertainment" expenses were more than I realized, and (looking back) I spent thousands of dollars each year on things I really did not need and never actually used! Homework assignment: Walk around your house and property, taking note of what just sits there and you never actually used or regret buying. I promise it will be an eye-opener ! That money could just have easily been used to create an "Emergency Fund" to pay unexpected bills and give me more peace of mind.

Best way to stay poor is to not believe it's possible to build wealth. If someone can vividly picture the future they want, set up a plan of action and execute against that plan at a high level over an extended period of time they will become wealthy. Being able to picture your future will help during the time you need to delay pleasure to build the life of your dreams.

You can't choose what situation you grow up in but you CAN choose what you do with your life. If you don't want to continue on living that way get your hs degree, work a job then when you graduate move out of that and do something better with your life. it won't be easy but can and has been done before. There are white people , all races that have grown up in not so great circumstances. There are people that grew up privileged yet chose to do drugs and live in the non privileged ways. It's all about taking control of what choices we have control of and just doing the best we can. IMHO

I mostly agree. Unless a person has a severe disability, financial success and secure retirement is attainable with discipline. And yes, many can become millionaires. I like the word “grit”. I had a lot of it when I was young and it wained over time. I’m getting it back and feel the power again. The only thing I would like to add about this is that white males, like myself, often underestimate the pervasiveness of racism and bigotry even in today’s society. For those of us who believe like Dave does, I think remembering how tough some people have it in life is important. And, we should speak out to encourage and offer advice to people who struggle so they can learn to overcome the psychological obstacles. It’s much better than dismissing people who feel overwhelmed. And, it feels good to offer that little bit of help.
