This is very smart! Laundry soap is not only expensive, but I’ve constantly seen empty shelves at our local Walmart. I have a home economics book from the 1940’s, and they have recipes for all this kind of stuff. It was commonplace for woman to make all their own cleansers. Now we are all brainwashed to think we can only purchase it ready made!

I made laundry soap similar to this and it seemed to work for a couple months, but then I noticed clothes weren't getting clean. I did some research and learned that detergent is different from soap, soap needs to be scrubbed into things to get them clean, so these recipes are best for hand washing clothes where you can really scrub. Otherwise you get soap residue build up and clothes don't get properly cleaned.

I use the Borax and Washing Soda combo, but instead of Fels Naptha (I do use that as a stain stick) I use liquid Peppermint Castile soap- no shredding and melting required! So easy and quick to make. Per gallon of water: 3 Tbsp each of Borax, Washing Soda, and liquid Castile soap.
@slee79912 жыл бұрын
So is fels naptha better for stains then? Do you just rub directly on the stained clothing with some water? And just to clarify 3 tbsp borax, 3 tbsp washing soda, 3 tbsp of peppermint castile soap per gallon water. How many gallons do you usually make at a time? Does this detergent work in every type of washing machine even the newer ones? Sorry lol obviously never done all this before!
@abbyski2 жыл бұрын
@@slee7991 Yep, I just wet the stained clothing and rub the Fels Naptha bar onto it, enough that I see a bit of lather. And the measurements are correct. I make one gallon at a time. I dissolve the Borax and Washing Soda in hot water, just a few cups, then fill the rest of the gallon with cool water. Then I add the Castile Soap. I shake up the gallon container a bit to mix the soap before dispensing it into the washer. I use this detergent in a newer HE washer, have been for a couple years and it's been working great!

I also live in Canada. I’m really considering doing this homemade laundry soap. The price of the washing soda and borax at a health food store would be so expensive, but you can usually find cheaper options at places like Walmart. I’ve got some old vintage books, with recipes for homemade laundry soap. Apparently the use of washing soda and borax are both used to counteract hard water. Apparently they can actually damage your clothes if they aren’t dissolved properly, or too much is used. So it might be worthwhile to just try dissolving the bar of soap, and using that solution, to cut the cost.

I've been using this laundry soap recipe for a couple years now except I use a Dr bronners unscented Castile soap bar to keep it as clean as possible. The problem I have is, after it sits a couple weeks it starts to separate even after stirring. When I get near the bottom of the bucket, I have to refill with water and do this a couple times to use up the thick soap on the bottom. I'm sorry, I'm a bit confused regarding your 100% chemical free in 5 days challenge - Your video starts with the making up of washing detergent by mixing Borax (sodium tetraborate), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), soap (made up of oil/fat, lye, and water which, through a chemical reaction gives you soap), and water, which in and of itself is made up of hydrogen and oxygen in its purest form. Everything around us is made up of chemical compositions - we are complex carbon life forms with chemical reactions going on inside us all the time; for e.g. our stomachs contain hydrochloric acid which aids digestion... So I'm interested to understand what you mean by 100% chemical free.
