Sound advice "Mentor"! You have improved my tying tremendously and I even tied a few flies for the World Flyfishing Championship in Slovakia. Something I would not have been confident to do without your tuition. Kindest thoughts from NZ.

My grandfather taught me to lubricate the metal ferrules on my fly rods to keep them from getting stuck. Actually I use the facial oils for many things now.

At the shop. we often have people placing very small orders...1 of Adams...1of Pheasant Tail and 1 of Caddis Pupa...that's when I know that person is learning how to 'undo' a fly. Oholi, we need more 'Journeyman' anglers to keep the spirit going...teach where applicable. If only the new 'Apprentices' of our wonderful sport would be willing to learn..face to face instead of relying on socials. Thank You for taking time to share your insight and approach to the craft and art of fly tying. I firmly believe with the points you made. Practicing the basic techniques from starting the thread on the hook to whip finishing and everything in between... not tying flies but practicing each individual step to tie a fly is essential. You are correct, repetition develops the skills needed to achieve satisfaction from the time spent at the vise. Best Regards

Another excellent video with the advantage of wisdom and experience to augment your knowledge. I've kept a lot of the early flies I tied, rather than cut them off to re-use the hook, just because it helps to keep me humble and to be able to compare my progress. I agree with your choices of books, too, although the Benchside Reference can be a little overwhelming for a beginning tyer. To that list I would add Gary Borger's Designing Trout Flies, which like the Feather Mechanic also concentrates on the "engineering" aspects rather than just describing patterns. As does van der Spuy, Borger encourages you to think about why you use a certain material, and how it is applied to achieve the effect you are looking for.

Hi Vladimir. It took me about 20 years to buy a good pair of scissors. Fly tying and a low budget mixes like oil and water.

Not necessarily. I've could've used razors just as fine. But in general, its much better to use good quality tools and materials....that said...its not necessary and people with lower budget can and should find cheaper alternatives.

Great video my friend and yes, "The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference in Techniques and Dressing Styles" is super awesome. I suggest buying this book to all new tiers. It's pricey but worth the money and I suggest looking for used copies if money is tight. Like you stated, buy the best tools and materials you can afford so you aren't buying "twice"!

Good ideas.I think with all social media of any kind. the main thig s to be cvl and encouraging. People who are simply blunt and sarcastic are awful. We can always help wth good tips and encouragement. Social media h=generally have contributed to very poor behaviour ni many fields. Hopefully fishiing and fly tying less so. :-)

Thanks. I agree, social media became kind of necessary evil... although i dont see it as that necessary. People definitely need to learn proper etiquette there. Too many are feeling way too comfortable saying anything. However, regardless of their way of saying things, people shouldn't take it too hard....after all...its people who we dont see, dont know, unimportant people who are doing these bad things....so why would anyone care? Thats why i try to see if there is anything there to learn from their comments. Just a thought.... our minds arent prepared to deal with social media and so many interactions with so many people and i believe that is the reason there is a thing called bullying on social media. People just arent used to it.... Sorry for my long answer 😀😀🍻

Using your nose to lubricator the bobbin holder I’m sure was a Davie McPhail method.. I find getting proportions correct and volumes of dubbing was and remains a challenge, any recommendations to apply simple methods or apply rules to get that right each time?

Davie for sure, some people actually told me to grease it with my nose in one of my older videos. Cool advice. Regarding proportions. Its easiest to use hook as a gauge. If you need every tail to be the same, align it along the shank, measure the required length and tie it in... same principle goes for hackle, wings....you can use any part of the hook as a gauge. By time ...your eyes will do it without measuring anything. Hope this helps. Best Vladimir

I usually give them away at this point. Once or twice a year i empty my boxes and give flies to young anglers around
