Nina Simone : Piano & Vocals
On bass: Jimmy Bond
On drums: Albert 'Tootie' Heath
YOU CAN HAVE HIM ( by Irving Berlin )
Jazz-ballad from the album "NINA at TOWNHALL" New York 1959
Lyrics:
I DONT WANT HIM ,YOU CAN HAVE HIM
HE'S NOT WORTH FIGHTING FOR
BESIDES THERE'S PLENTY MORE WHERE HE CAME FROM
I DON'T WANT HIM ,YOU CAN HAVE HIM
I'M GIVING HIM THE SACK
AND HE CAN GO RIGHT BACK
WHERE HE CAME FROM
I'M AFRAID I NEVER LOVED HIM
SWEETIE, HE"D BE BETTER OF WITH YOU
I COULD NEVER MAKE HIM HAPPY
ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO WAS
RUN MY FINGERS THRU HIS CURLY LOCKS
MEND HIS UNDERWEAR AND DARN HIS SOCKS
FETCH HIS SLIPPERS AND REMOVE HIS SHOES
WIPE HIS GLASSES WHEN HE"S READ THE NEWS
RUB HIS FOREHEAD WITH A GENTLE TOUCH
MORNING'S AFTER WHEN HE"S HAD A LITTLE TOO MUCH
KISS HIM GENTLY WHEN HE CUDDLES NEAR
AND GIVE HIM BABIES ONE FOR EVERY YEAR
SO YOU SEE THAT I DON"T WANT HIM
YOU CAN HAVE HIM,YOU CAN HAVE HIM
CAUSE I DON'T WANT HIM
BECAUSE HE'S NOT THE MAN ..FOR ME
THEN I CLOSE THE WINDOW WHILE HE SOUNDLY SLEPT
RAID THE ICEBOX WHERE THE FOOD IS KEPT
FIX HIM BREAKFAST THAT WOULD PLEASE HIM MOST
EGGS AND COFFEE AND SOME BUTTERED TOAST
THEN I GO OUT AND BUY THE PAPERS
AND WHEN THEY'VE BEEN READ
SPEND THE BALANCE OF THE DAY IN BED,SO YOU SEE
I DON'T WANT HIM , YOU CAN HAVE HIM
YOU CAN HAVE HIM ,CAUSE I DON'T WANT HIM
CAUSE HE'S NOT THE MAN FOR ME..............

btw, the song 'You can have him', is from the musical "Miss Liberty', composed by Irvin Berlin in 1949. Dinah Shore and Doris Day, recorded a lovely, early duet version in 1949 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZiXgYuBdsp5hqM Helen Forrest in 1949 kzbin.info/www/bejne/g2qYn6OOrs6Lmbc Ella Fitzgerald in 1958 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJutYqB8e72faLc and quite a superb one by Nancy Wilson, on her fabulous 1964 album 'Broadway-My Way' kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJvJoYKtadesiaM Of course there's Shirley Bassey kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpSWl3qCodB2rrs and many other wonderful singers, who recorded their versions of this great song by Irvin Berlin.

My parents took me to see Nina Simone perform at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago. It was either 1966 or 1967 and I was not quite a teenager. I have always cherished the memory of the outing with my parents who were from the west side of Chicago. I found her quite fascinating in both how she looked, her voice and piano playing. To this day I remember her fish net stockings! Just a short time later my mom passed away in 1969 and my dad in 1971. I cemented the memory of this experience -- and also of seeing Duke Ellington at the same place -- for more than 50 years. My father loved jazz and this family outing and sacrifice on their part is so special. I always felt like they knew they would not be around, and wanted to give me experiences that my two much older siblings received in different ways.

You can tell that she's sad to lose him from the sweet words she uses in her verses. The chorus is just but an ego boost. Indeed, just like she said in her 1999 interview with Hardtalk BBC "I don't sing from anger, I sing from intelligence" R.I.P Legend.

@@lemmesay She had bipolar disorder, a very serious mental illness, and lived in an era when her condition went undiagnosed and untreated. She also lived in a time when blacks were hunted and treated like animals and were not protected by the government. You really expect she'd be a calm, cool and collected person? It is extremely unfortunate that her child was affected because of it, but also be rational about the actual circumstances when bringing down such judgment on people who have mental illness.

@@lemmesay I've watched that doc too. I love Nina's music. Your feelings about her daughter's situation make clompete sense. But i think the sensible approach is not to hate Nina herself but rather acknowledge that everyone involved was miserable in their own way. Sadly, children can't fend for themselves or get out. So I'm right there with you. But calling Nina an angry bitch is an oversimplification of very serious medical, personal and societal problems.

Nina Simone didn't want to be a singer, she wanted to be a classical pianist. This live recording here is one of the best vocal performances ever on record. As a bandleader she constructed a superb arrangement, with a ravishing crescendo throughout that you know is taking you to a powerful finish. (Where she ends up releasing unexpected jubilation while you're trying not to cry.) If ever there was a "triple threat" in music who would humble anyone, it is Miss Nina Simone. I can be steely, but when she gets to that first "for" at 0:29, the walls are down.

I have worked at Town Hall for the past 33 YEARS. Many live recordings have been made there (because the acoustics are near perfect) however, all of the others pale compared to Nina's. I wasn't there in 1958 but, thankfully, she appeared there 3 more times before she died and I had the great pleasure to greet her each time. She loved the way she sounded there and, for me, that was very gratifying.

Thank you. It's always a pleasure to think and comment about Nina. I have a program from one of her concerts on which she wrote a few musical notes and signed her name. After her death, we presented a tribute to her hosted by her daughter, Simone. One of the highlights was Patti Smith singing "Don't Smoke in Bed". Aside from "You Can Have Him", my other favorites include "The Other Woman", "My Baby Just Cares For Me" and her amazingly powerful version of "The Times They Are A Changin" on which she plays the organ. Her voice was completely unique as was her gift with a keyboard. I wish she'd had a happier Life but that may have altered her music.

I was once one of those men ‘not worth fighting for’. Hearing this song (forty years ago now!) was like having a bucket of ice-cold water thrown in my face. It made me sit up, take a good look at how I was taking my girlfriend for granted, and change my ways. We’ve been married for forty-two years now, and she’s pretty much forgiven me (I think) 😅… bless you Nina you genius, my favourite singer ever, you were such a star and such an example to women everywhere ❤

I don't interpret this as a breakup song. It's a heartbreak song. She's just learned her beloved has been untrue, and she's heartbroken. Obviously, she still loves the guy. But in this song, she's only letting her heart break over him. It seems more likely that he is the one who left her, so she's working it out in her heart to get over him.

So sad , yet so empowering. It’s never too late to realise he is not the one, it’s never too late to chose you. Something you will never be able to take back or buy: is time; so invest it on yourself, on your happiness, your babies and your future. God bless all women on earth.

I think she is singing this song to the woman who is taking her man away from her: I don't want him, you can have him. It starts with defiance, and then the truth comes out: all I ever wanted to do....and she lists all of the loving, tender and beautiful things that she had envisaged doing with him for the rest of her life. It's a heart breaking, beautiful song.

Absolutely. It's all about a woman trying to convince herself she doesn't want/need the sorry ass man she's still very much in love with, but no matter what, her heart won't listen to her head. It's one of the worst feelings and most challenging predicaments a human can experience. It SUCKS.

Only heard this just for the first time, and it’s brought me to tears. Gratitude joy and sadness rolled into one. Great music can do that. Such a simple song really but she evokes a lot in it. The words she’s not saying and her emotional tones reveal her pain. Whatever gender we all want to do those things or have them done to us. The small behaviours of a true love. I hope to find somebody again that I can offer that service too and hopefully this time get some sugar back! Love can be joy and pain but it needs to be as honest and consistent as it is necessary. Thanks Nina

The worst thing for me about having a crush is not being his girlfriend and breaking up with him after. The worst thing for me about having a crush is that he doesn't like me back, and that I'll never have a chance to be with him. Add to that that he likes someone else. It's just soooo heartbreaking 😭💔 and this master piece of Nina helps me go through it! I thank Nina for singing and playing such a master piece! 💜

Obviously she still desperately wants him and wanted to carry on loving him and doing all those loving things she sings about, but as a protective measure, she has to tell her self she doesn't want him, but she desperately does. He's obviously closed his mind to her completely and has this new woman. That's my interpretation.

I found Nina own my own just a few years ago thanks to the Zoe Saldana movie outrage. What a treasure Nina is.
