You can improve radically in the first day. A bit more in the second... almost nothing after 3 months... This is only true in the mediocrity region. That's all I'm saying.

I moved to the U.S. at the age of thirty. I decided to start a college and study in an electrical engineering. I had almost no knowledge in English, math, physics, chemistry, and etc. I took the math and English entrance tests in order to enroll in a college. It was so frustrating that I got 16/100 in math and 54/100 in English. But these weak results didn’t make me regret from my decision. I still remember a face of those people such as some family member and my advisor who told me that forget about engineering. They told me that there is no way for you to get to the engineering college with such weak background in math and sciences. After all, I am now a senior student in electrical engineering in one of the famous state university in the U.S. I could never even imagine myself as a student in such a prestige university. All you need to do is to tell your self that I can do it! And I will do it! Then sit and study hard. I promise you that you can do whatever you decided to do.

Ph.D Melchor I used to know English like any other Native American because I was born in U.S. but I moved with my mom to my mom’s home country when I was 3 years old. However, I got back to the U.S. after thirty years. Long story short. I started to watch news channel and writing down the vocabularies then finding the meaning of that in my mom’s language. For my math skills, I watched and I am still watching lot of videos from khan academy on KZbin to boost my math skills as well as my other science class at school. Hope it will help!

I'm also curious to know, as a fellow vocabulary learner: Do you find the etymological approach of zeroing in on word roots to see how ideas and words connect and migrate across space-time helpful? I have learned how to play the Ukulele and I have been taking Squash / Tennis lessons for the past few weeks. And today, I began learning how to code. But, why am I telling you all of this? And I used to be someone who thought everyone had a natural talent and I was the only one who didn't. Incase there are people who are in need of help or motivation. Let me tell you a story of a deaf boy. Due to his disability, he has a hard time learning stuff. He never learnt to count until 4 years old. He would fail everything. Math, English, Science. Usually, everyone would just quit but not him. He worked through countless tuition and speech therapy. 7 years later, he is in a prestigious school with a great future. He wants to have countless occupations - Radiologist, Game Developer, Bio-Engineer, Technologist, Businessman. He gets great marks in math and biology with an A on his final exam. While he does have amazing scores, he still have flaws and struggles with chemistry, history and English but he still practice and uses his time. You may think that this person is incredible but believe me, it's not. It's not the power of himself, it's the power of never giving up and self-determination. If he, a deaf person can somehow pull this off, then you, an amazing person can do it too. All you need is the power of never giving up and self-determination. And that deaf person... is me. Never give up, your most difficult obstacle will become your warm up.

Khan Academy has help me quite a bit in the last month or so.I'm used a good bit of the online resources to familiarize myself on several educational subjects. If were doing ten years ago what i'm doing now.(going back to college to finish a degree) I would definitely have had a harder time finding a great deal of the review materials i needed.

Be comforted by the knowledge that whatever you do, whatever direction you turn, there are treasures of knowledge, a myriad of deep oceans, every single one deep enough to never reach the bottom within your lifetime. And of those myriads of oceans, no two look or feel alike. And yes, you might be curious about the hidden realms of all the oceans you can't visit or go deep enough in, just because there are too many overall, but you can always rely on visitors of those hidden realms who brought back invaluable treasures to marvel about. Public education infuriates me by letting certain kids believe they are genuinely dumb. Ever since I was born up to high school, I've been told I was 'dumb'. Do you know why? It's because I was extremely shy and I hid myself from the world and everyone. No one understood why I wouldn't utter a word. So guess what? At first, they put me in an institution for genuinely retarded people. I sat there, looking at those people with those disabilities and thinking: "This is not me. I don't belong here". Finally, my parents got me out of there and I continued school as per usual. In high school I had the same problems. Thankfully that nightmare is over now and guess what: my grade average is 85% at university. I am just angry at all the people who thought I was dumb. After growing up I finally realized I am much smarter than the norm. I want to tell everyone: don't be fooled by narrow minded fools out there! Don't let anyone let think you are dumb because you are not! Believe in yourself! You can make it!

I'm a 27 year old Pilot/Flight Instructor. I'm not an emotional person, but I cry every time I watch this video. I had a terrible education growing up because of personal circumstances, and I was always very hard on myself. I felt stupid. My marks were never very good - mostly because I was never in class and I was missing fundamental concepts from earlier grades -. I graduated highschool not knowing my multiplication tables and feeling inferior. I'm now a Pilot, instructing, supervising other Instructors and flight training at a reputable Aviation College. With hard work, patience and perseverence, you can learn anything!

I can't imagine going to school without Kahn academy-- you guys have literally changed the way students interact with material. No one is "too far behind" anymore if they have the willpower and an internet connection. In high school, I could barely pass basic math-- I couldn't afford a tutor, and I'm not sure youtube really even existed yet lol. Going back to college as an adult, I've been a straight A student and am about to graduate at a top five medical school-- and I'd say about half of my basic sciences education came from your site and others like it. Truly gifted kids are such a minority that they shouldn't even be a factor in your choice of whether or not you'll apply yourself to a particular discipline. I'm apparently "gifted". Ironically I was one of the rare kids that did nothing but study, train, compete during school and at the end of it all I get people that can't be bothered to apply themselves at all tell me I'm lucky because I'm gifted. Aghhh im only good at school cuz im anxious if i dont do homework. Im in 9th grade, still anxious. . Always gave to do it. Also just simply listening to the teacher at the lesson n ok part 2- im only good at piano becourse i love playing piano. Im good at rap and vocal JUST CUZ I LOVE DOING IT. I'm a 2nd year Biotechnology student from the states, however due to circumstances, I am studying in Poland. All my material is in Polish which is 'somewhat' familiar to me but no where near enough to be getting a college education. Anyways, the only reason why I am able to continue to study here with success is because of you guys! Truly thank you for everything that you guys have done. P.S. my first word when the video ended was, "really?" with a shaky disbelief voice, but strongly motivated! I wanna learn computers! I'm a 21 student who still doesn't understand basic computers. Because back then my aunt said angrily that I broke her computer which I didn't, and that makes me really scared to touch a computer after that. Now that I don't live in her house anymore, I should have bravery to learn and not shy even when I start very basic

Interesting discussion folks! Absolutely there is a major distinction between learning and simply memorizing facts. As a music teacher (drums) I know of the importance of learning the building blocks, the vocabulary of the language. Memorizing songs will not help you learn the language. Some students may choose to cram for a test by memorizing the material, but that does not change the fact that they ARE capable of learning it, but they were just too lazy to do so in the proper manner.

Im seeing this right after submitting my college apps. I'm a senior now, yet it was only a day ago I was a 4th grader coming across this video while practicing fractions. im really scared for where i'll go, the path i'll take and what i'll begin to do- will i be with the people I love, or will I be lonely? will i be successful, happy to see the results? seeing this after a long time really drew a full circle, knowing that i'll always be continuing mistakes but always learning from them and constantly gaining more knowledge. i'll try my hardest.

I remember watching this when i took my Gcses. A*, A, B, B, C, C, C. Took my A levels. Passed every one. Khan Academy has helped so much and even though i'm not sure if it has university material. I agree, but I fear that some people will misunderstand this and take it to mean you can do _anything_ at the same LEVEL as _anyone_ if you work as hard. If you want to reach expert level, in anything competitive, you need to start during the crucial early years of life. If you miss out (during early childhood) on learning related things about whatever you're looking to learn, then as an adult you're completely screwed (that is if you want to compete with those who didn't miss out). An adult who never dabbled in anything musical (or music related) as a kid, will _never_ reach the heights of someone picking it back up in adulthood, putting in the same hours/practice quality as you, let alone an expert performer who has been at it consistently since they were 2 years old. This is not just because of total time in practice hours (which is crucial), but because they missed those crucial formative years where you have the most free time you'll ever have in your life, your brain is primed for myelination, and your curiousity and sense of 'play' is at it's peak. You just can't compete with people who have had that kind of exposure (and they're abundant). Not only those lucky enough to have done all of that, but also those elite few who had the _best_ possible help, were financially able to afford to do it, had ultra supportive parents who sacrificed some of their own life for your pursuit, _and_ had regular access to peers, and mentors who were better than they were. That said, as an adult who missed this window, and had none of the advantages mentioned, you CAN still learn _almost_ anything, or at least learn it to a sufficiently competent level (whatever level that may be for you).
