I'm 61 years old, and this mashes my brain. But I consider this a good thing. I've only been playing a year and I learned a lick from one of your previous videos, it took me nearly 9 months to crack. This one is proving 'easier', well only a few weeks so far, but it is so enjoyable to suddenly realise my hands and fingers are suddenly doing as they are told. It is amazing. I am a long way from the finish line, but I'm going to have a ball getting there :-)

I'm 65 and am doing exactly the same thing. 35 years of playing very basic blues guitar and now turning my hand to keyboards for the first time, after watching Brendan Kavenagh on you tube. I brought a Roland digital piano around 3 months ago and decided to try my luck. I could manage individually, but with both hands everything stopped. I have been on this video now for around a month, with around an hour a day practice. I'm nearly at the end, and just need to speed up. It's great, so satisfying and it drives my desire to come back for more. Long live boogie woogie blues.

My dad doesn't read music but he has played boogie woogie as long as I can remember. I love thinking about my dad playing the piano because it meant he was in a good mood. I'm trying to secretly learn boogie woogie so my dad and I can play together the next time I see him. Maybe I will teach my kids boogie woogie when I finally learn it.

Boogie demands a higher degree of hand independence than any other music genre and you did well in describing the mindless repetition, repetition, repetition, it takes to get there. I liked your "walking legs knowing what to do automatically" analogy. Use headphones if you have a digital piano or your family will disown you. While practicing a new left hand riff hundreds of times over, besides talking, or reading, or trying to write with my right hand, I'm able to see and hear the TV from the piano. I'll watch a show and try to immerse myself in it just as if I was sitting on the couch and not playing. In doing stuff like this, at some point the mindless repetition actually does become mindless and I've finally internalized the riff and I can play any right hand lick with it. This brain training does become easier over time, but I think even the pros have to do some form of it.
@jayacoustics91502 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment Dan.. your right, the brain training does get easier over time but still required, especially when playing the licks in different keys other than C, which is what you have to do when playing with guitarist as some don't prefer the key of C...😁🎸🎹

I'll bet this could be practiced away from the piano as well, like on a coffee table imagining that your fingers are playing the keys ☺🎹

Thanks for this. I'm so used to working with a piano roll and drawing in notes in my DAW; my poor 88 midi is just chilling next to me 24/7 never getting touched. I've loved the boogie woogie groove since a kid and honestly I've dreamed of being able to play it flawlessly, but every time I tried, I lacked the hand independence. This is EXACTLY the kind of drill I need to get down to finally get some hand independence. Starting today, I will do these drills an hour a day, every day until I can bloody well do it in my sleep. Thankfully I'm already really comfortable with triples (my fave kind of rhythm), so incorporating that when it's time to start freestyling shouldn't be a problem. Thanks again!

It may sound silly but this tutorial has made correlate something with my programming experience. Once you've programmed for long enough, you actually get excited when you finally find a bug because it means that your program is making advancements. So it is with this practice exercise, Any time I screw up on not hitting the right note or missing the timing, is actually a time to rejoice because all that means is that I've found a bug in my brain wiring that can now be addressed and patched by focusing on that mess-up. It sounds silly but It sure helps with turning something that can very easily be a source of frustration into somewhat interesting.

@@don4476 Thanks Don. I recently had a doctor friend visiting me and she mentioned a famous violinist who experienced similar injury/pain after years of playing without pain. It turns out they had replaced their bow with one that was 1/2 an ounce heavier. Going back to the same brand of bow dealt with the problem. She then commented on my posture while playing. The keyboard was too low for me and I was seated too low as well. I raised everything and I'm almost pain free now and can play longer. Crazy eh!

Left hand staccato I would say. I tried it out with a slightly more complex version of this left hand (playing c-c-es-e-g-c-a-g) and staccato immediately gives it the boogie vibe you're looking for.

Jerry, I made a very unusual " problem " for myself. Years ago, on a whim, I decided to do a Five Four version of boogie woogie; let's call it '10 to The Bar ' instead of 8. By using a multi track recorder, I could play left hand only; rewind and play right only. Your video reminds me that hand independence is best learned by playing both 👐 hands at the same time - but SLOWLY to avoid mistakes. 🙄 Thanks for the tips for beginners. 😊

By the way, Jerry, my childhood musical experience started with 💃 dancing, especially the waltzes & 3/4 time. (Adapting the " Waltz Box " from 3/4 to 5/4 seems easy to me than others). 🤔

Thanks for this great video. One bit I'm unsure about - when I progress to the excerise of the 12 bar play, does my right hand play the various beats in order as you've tought? (e.g. 2 and 4, then 1 and 3, then the off beats?) or is the idea that it gets to a point where I can do a freestyle mix of these (and that it doesn't really matter?). Thanks! Loving this style so want to grind away at it! 😊
@jayacoustics91503 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment... Best to focus on either of the beats individually (up to you).. Once you've got the hang of the individual beats, then start to mix them.. this will get your brain cells used to switching beats to a particular left hand pattern, and thus slowly start to gain hand independence 👍🎹😎

Thanks for your comment.. Yep it does get easier to learn a new lick as time goes on... Your best sticking with this basic lick for a while... The 'swanee river' lick I play at the end of the video is probably a good lick to progress these exercises to, once you've got the hang of the basic lick..👍😃

@@rickoakes5612 Yep. Even after playing boogie boogie you years now, I will still have to do these exercises when trying a new lick out, or if learning it in a new key for that matter..👍

I can't help but notice when you play triplets over pairs of 8th notes you play the last note of the triplet together with the 2nd eight note. Classically, this is not how I was taught, however I'm very new to Boogie Woogie. Is this the correct way to play them in a swing rhythm?
