You CAN PLAY Project Zomboid with Controllers FINE! (+Some TRICKS!)

I'm not exactly sure what the ratio of Project Zomboid players actually main controlelrs. I've played with several others online already and none of them do, so I want to be an advocate for it. The thumbnail's not lying, too, you can use Xbox controllers, Playstation Dualshock and Nintendo joycons and pro controllers!
This is not only a comprehensive guide for setting up and using a controller, but also includes some tricks.
I have a lot more fun when using a controller because it's so comfortable to use. Maybe you'll have more fun with controllers, too? Or maybe this is how you die next?

I just tried Zomboid on the Steam Deck. I was pleasantly surprised at how competent the gamepad controls were! And on the deck there's the added benefit of mapping additional actions to the back buttons, or even on screen touch buttons.

@@ggrogan I really don't know how it works on ROG, but on Steam Deck it's as simple ad navigating to the Steam Input menu and editing the control scheme and just choosing what buttons the back buttons represent (same for virtual on screen menus).

I use controller for this game and it feels great, only occasionally use Mouse/Keyboard for inventorys morseso with mods

I just bought it now and I can handle just using a mouse but when there’s so many keys man, I have to look at my keyboard and figure what to press, it said press LBM to attack and I didn’t n know wtf that was so I paused the game and apparently it means select but I swear my keyboard doesn’t have one, I’m gonna get up in the morning and see if I can set this up 😭😭

I haven't had troubles at all across multiple controllers. Might be a hardware issue, or connection issue if you're on wireless.

R3 doesn't do anything to my knowledge. Pressing Left ALT on the keyboard would be the only reason I can think of why your character would attack the ground, too.

Have you tried pressing start while ingame? A small menu may pop up that says "Take over Player One" or something.

@vivisdoodledworld7232 yea no problem just doesn't seem to be coming up in the setting connects no problem I'm debating trying the xbox browser just to see if it would work through that completely baffled by it if not just take few weeks to get keyboard controls down lol but as I say complete first time pc games brother is big into it develops games and builds pc so have wanted one for a while but the perks are free pc build🤣

I'm coming from a PlayStation world so when I started playing Zomboid I found keyboard controls were too hard. I found using a controller was significantly easier, especially when it comes to aiming weapons. Plus no longer have to be afraid of hitting the dreaded "q" button

You can not be walking while browsing the inventory menu while being chased by zombies to move some spears from back pack to main inventory with controllers.. 😂 i love the experience but. Rather play on keyboard and mouse

You can't? I'm pretty sure I could transfer weapons from my backpack, just gotta claw LB and D-Pad with my index fingers while moving with my thumbs.

I play Zomboid on my steam deck and I have to say it’s quite an amazing experience. If you get the controls dialed in right and utilize the advantage of the track pads (I personally use my right one as a mouse with the right click action when pressed and my left one as a scroll wheel with the left click as the press action), then utilize the back buttons to have 4 extra controls that you can set to whatever you want (I use them for mod actions like quick swap), you can get such a solid hybrid experience and it feels really great. Honestly I thought about using keyboard and mouse but having this experience has made me feel like I’d be missing out. Funny cuz your coming at your audience from a keyboard and mouse only perspective and I’m coming from a controller only perspective haha
