Porter family road trip around Alaska mountain biking on fun trails, salmon fishing, bikepacking, and checking out Alyeska Resort in Girdwood! Our trip was in June and the sun didn't set until close to midnight, so we made the most of the 20 hours of daylight and had a great adventure!

Man, thanks for taking the time to do an extended cut, was really cool to see a bit more in depth on that bike packing trip and the trip in general. Know you must have had some sort of plan, because you had some shots that def took some time/effort to setup/get, thanks. Great memories for the kids, make an extended, extended cut for them to watch in 10 years. BTW, you give me that little glimmer of hope that mankind is not all together lost and there's a chance that maybe we won't all end up like the people in Wall-E. Little hardship, lots of exercise and good ideals is what this world needs big time and you're giving that to your kids in heaps.

Yes! Another Porter family vid! Eric, any advice on how my 8yo son decided he hates bikes, I didn’t think I pushed him too hard? I sense he’s sacred and needs more basics but he refuses to ride anything now. I will be showing him this video so he can get the big picture 😉 thank you for the best content ever! Man that's a tough one, kids definitely can get scared easily and build mental blocks in their head, we've worked through some of those with our kids as well over the years. The best thing I've found is always creating a great experience around each ride, making sure that things aren't too scary and they can just have a good time, and stopping rides a little bit before they are ready to stop, so it leaves them wanting more and makes sure they don't get too tired cause that's when crashes happen. Something you could try is using the bike as a tool, so the goal is to go get ice cream, or go to the playground or the river, but riding bikes is just how you get there. That can get them riding without thinking of it as a bike ride, the riding is secondary to the thing they really want to do. Then it starts to get more fun and they see the bike as an avenue to more fun. Sometimes a break is good as well, mixing up the sports for a season! Good luck, think of it as playing the long game, bikes are a lifelong activity!

I visited Homer on my motorcycle this summer. Enjoyed Independence Day celebration on the main st. Great fun! Camped on the Spit, found a beautiful Aleut crafted marble bracelet for my wife on the Spit also. A wonderful place and really nice, no-pretense folks. I hope to return this coming summer on a newer, lighter bike. Maybe a trip up to Prudoe Bay.

Haha I see where you're coming from, those batteries last a long time though, I go weeks of riding without charging it. I do prefer a traditional cable actuated derailleur on big remote international trips, but the AXS has been really great overall, no problems in 2 years of riding it.

Wife & I got married in AK, many, many, many…… years ago. Surprised you had no animal encounters to share. Nearly every time I rode in AK I ran into moose and had to stop and wait for them to move along.

That's awesome! I figured we'd see more wildlife too, but I guess they had plenty of places to go and food to eat since the snow had just melted. We saw one bear but didn't get it on camera, and a couple moose as well but no close encounters. Usually we see a lot more!

Question? What’s the family tent setup along with everyone’s sleeping bags. We just went to mount Mitchell tent campsites near summit and it was a long windy cold night. But, the meltdowns were worth the time better prepares us for the future. We love the videos.

Hey Caleb! Great question! Working on a how to video about bikepacking, but here's what we use. I'm a big fan of Big Agnes gear, it's really light and packable, and they love bikepacking! We used the Tiger Wall UL3 from them, Megan and the kids were in one tent and I was in the other tent with Justin who helped film the trip, here's a link to check it out. bit.ly/3E50hcm I usually bring a 3 person tent for 2 people so there's room for gear, or with kids it works great one adult 2 kids in there. Sleeping pads are really important, a lot of heat is lost into the ground because it's cold, these are really light and small but have 3.5 r value insulation which helps a lot - bit.ly/3psZUo5 Then for sleeping bags I like using the ones with Downtek, it's down insulation that is treated so it's water resistant, and is much lighter and more packable than synthetic insulation. Use a bag rated about 10 degrees colder than the low temp you expect on your trip. bit.ly/30LA8AW Good luck, have fun out there, it's always worth it!!
