You Can't Install Final Fantasy XI on the PlayStation 2 in (2024) | PS2 - Every Day Retro Gaming

To the best of my knowledge you can no longer install FFXI onto the PlayStation 2. This is due to the fact you need to install PlayOnline services first. Which can't be install due to not being able to authenticate with the Square-Enix Servers.

Sony really fucked up by not being serious with the HDD and online during the PS2 era. Still beats the hell out of being completely dependent on a memory card.

I completely agree. All I really heard from Sony at the time was you need the hard drive if you want to play FFXI.

technically, it is possible to bypass the drm checks. They done it with most normal PS2 games by passing the DNAS verifacation. however this time the .iso itself would need to be exploited. so it is doable but its difficult to perform and nobody has done it. yet....

even though the server where shut down in 2016 (making it impossible to play/install) its still bit of a shame you formatted the drive in the last video, as the previous owners install was still on the drive.

Fingers crossed someone can develop a DNAS bypass specifically for PlayOnline use on a PS2. I got me a copy and an official HDD in the event this goes up and running. I wanna install it soo bad!

You can. Just buy the PC version, install it, register, create an adventurer... and have fun from your laptop, or even Steam deck. This game rocks.

Plenty of people do this with Phantasy Star Online. I'm sure if the main servers on PC for FF XI go offline the fans will resurrect it through a hack of some kind. I'd love to play it since I missed out during its time.

maybe there's a way to do it with opl, or could be if the devs (who seem to prioritise licensed games and yearly sports games for some reason) found a way. that's going straight to the hard drive anyway the things i'd do to play this game with friends on my 32" crt in the living room

Maybe someone can do 2, one that would go to right before Wotg released (75 era) and one that would go to right before SoA came out (99 era no item level). If I could get my hands on a Ps2 dev kit I would try to figure it out but they are like 10Gs.

this is probably a stupid question as most of you probably dont know the answer, but i use a ps2 emulator on my pc, and as it states in the video the PlayOnline service died out and is inaccessible, but another thought comes to mind. Final Fantasy XI has private servers that run on the PlayOnline software for Windows PCs, would there be a way to accurately emulate the PS2 PlayOnline server gateway and have it install the required files from the windows version of the site using a private server dedicated solely for downloading the required files? basically, is it possible to trick the PS2 emulator into thinking its downloading the PlayOnline service from the PS2 servers, when it is actually downloading it from the windows version of the PlayOnline service? from my understanding they work the same... its just the PS2 server is closed off indefinitely.

I think, although it allowed for cross-platform play between PS2 and PC players, both had their own ways of authentication.

I played ffxi from its release on ps2 and even well into the Xbox 360 era. I eventually got it for the 360 though. But I loved playing my ps2 online. I played metal gear online, resident evil outbreak 1 and 2, Tony hawk and socom. But then og xbox blew my mind how well online games were on console in that era.

@noahkrause2835 I know I played on pc after ps2/360 were done. I quit ffxi around 2021. I started ffxi in 2004. The game will always hold a place in my heart, but I made the decision that I was finally done with it.

To anyone who has the PlayOnline services downloaded already, would it be possible to copy the installation data from the host HDD to another HDD? I'm curious if this is at least possible to rectify clean or already deleted files.

Im guessing if you use a utility like HDDRAWCOPY on windows, it might be possible. To explain a bit further, my PS2 is softmodded, but like most that is softmodded with FreeMCBOOT, mine is softmodded using modified files on the hard drive, or in my case, SSD. So, when my ps2 boots up, it biots up like normal, but then you see the hard drive available in the PS2 Browser. I can then do as i wish with it. I installed the softmod by taking a preprepared hard drive "image" and using HDDRAWCOPY to install it to an SSD. then connecting that SSD to my ps2 like a hard drive. So, using HDDRAWCOPY, one can back up their ps2 hard drive into an image and apply it elsewhere.

It would be fun to explore on Ps2 even if it was by yourself. If the PC version is playable with a controller maybe it might have some spark. I missed out on both Ps2 and PC versions back in the day. See if there is a 14 day free trial still for PC. I did the trial a few times but never jumped fully into the game.

The ps2-ps3 support end over years ago, when the playonline client check with SE server and see ps3 ID, it will tell it, we no longer support you bruh

You cannot authenticate because of the Sony's DNAS Service that was long shut down. This service provide the validation of authentic PS2 disc you wanted to play online back in the days. It was discontinued in April 2016 and the PS2 version of Final Fantasy XI was discontinued in the end of March of the same year, since it can be played without this service.

Do NOT delete the game! That hard drive is gold of it's weight. It has to be preserved and indeed, complete copies like yours makes possible of eventually running it again on private/fan servers! 👌

Well you can play it on PC now. So that's awesome. Btw you can play one of the private servers if you don't want to buy it. But I'd recommend you just buy it.

I did a free trial a few times and the one time I was going to continue my account and sub they banned that account. Apparently the free trial code was used multiple times. It is a lot of fun and I love how punishing the game is.

@@EveryDayRetroGaming The issue is DNAS which no longer exists. It is possible to actually install POL on a ps2 with DNAS being patched out but that leads to other issues which prevents it from being started.
