Hey man, have you had any issues with phosphates and tannins from the wood. Im thinking of doing the same and also are there any definite nope woods? Thanks
@australianaquarist
@australianaquarist 8 ай бұрын
No idea about phosphate as I don’t test this tank for it. You will get slight tannin release, but interesting not as much as in freshwater tanks. Carbon, or better still ozone if a large tank, would take care of it. I used native banksia and Tuckeroo. Not sure where you live? In my area, I make sure to stay away from Camphor Laurel, which is a weed species, and known for its toxicity to aquatic waterways.

@glub9075 any toxic trees there? You’d have camphor laurel I guess. That’s the main one I stay away from.

How thick is the glass?
@australianaquarist
@australianaquarist Жыл бұрын
The glass in my estuary tank is 10mm float glass. I used the front and back pane from a 6ft tank to make the front of the tank, and the front pane of a 4ft tank , for the end wall. The remainder of the tank is epoxied plywood. The water height is around 580mm deep

I really like the look of it. Always fancied Estuary/mangrove style aquariums in the 'saltwater' world. If it suited your scape you should get your hands on some Mangroves. I believe I know a supplier up in the NT that can get them in for you should you be interested. (They ship interstate bar WA and Tas) Might make that whole system pop. But regardless looking awesome mate. Great honest down to earth advice and well explained. Keep up the great work 🤙👍

Thanks Jonathan I’ve got some extra fish plans which will help with colour - Lunar/Moon wrasses. Very common in our estuaries here. The only problem with a mangrove is the lighting. I think to thrive, some very intense daylight lighting would be needed. Thanks for your thoughts, and taking the time to comment👍

@@australianaquarist By no means does it need more colour! But it is always nice. Always love some live green in aquariums! As a plant man cant help myself. Yes. They do require some intenser lighting. I did actually grow one in a store i worked at. Was only using standard marine lights and the buildings flourescents of course did impact it a bit. But i will say many many of the plant LEDs now would be able to do it. They have come a long way and Mangroves just havent been played with enough since that revolution in lighting. But i digress. I am loving the tank and cant wait to see it evolve be it through natural changes or new additions! Keep it up mate.

Aren't mangroves highly illegal to sell in Australia? I'm pretty sure they're all protected?
@jonathankool1997
@jonathankool1997 6 ай бұрын
@@volvandthepocketkaiju super duper highly illegal to collect without a license they are protected by law. However there is 1 official licensed collector I know of and it's heavily limited in collection rates and type of mangrove. If you don't have the license then yeap. 100% illegal to collect.
