I burst out crying when I heard the grandfather pronounce "pajamas." That's exactly the way my grandmother (who taught herself English by reading English newspapers) pronounced pajamas! As a first-generation Brit of Polish parents who met in England after WWII, I vowed my children would speak Polish. My son isn't fluent but understands and can carry a conversation in Polish. Merry Christmas to you and all! My adult son, born in Canada , still speaks Polish with us. But wherever in Polish family were more than one child, Polish was gone the moment they went to school. It was very rare that the parents were able to keep an "only Polish" household without antagonize kids and make Polish speaking a dreadful chore. It is a very fine line. But those kids - now adults- who still speak Polish are grateful to their parents for enabling them to do so.

I've watched your videos since I decided to visit Poland about two years ago. After visiting in 2022 I decided to move to Poland. I arrived in Katowice last July, not knowing anybody. Jestem w Irlandii i mam 6 siostrzenic i siostrzeńców, wszyscy mówia po polsku, 2 nawet trochę po czesku, po mamie. Nie wyobrażam sobie nie mówić do dzieci po polsku, to przecież jest zaleta, firmy czasem szukaja ludzi dwujęzycznych, wysyłaja do innych krajów. Mam nadzieję że mój chłopak chorwat będzie mówił do dzieci po swojemu. Angielskiego naucza się w szkole/ otoczeniu. Parę lat temu spotkałam pod blokiem sąsiadkę z wnuczką. Zamieniłyśmy parę słów i się okazało, że dziewczynka nie zna ani słowa po polsku! Córka sąsiadki wyemigrowała do Norwegii wiele lat temu i wzięła ślub z Norwegiem i nigdy swojej córki nie nauczyła mówić po polsku. Byłam w szoku ale jeszcze bardziej sąsiadka która nie miała jak się porozumieć z wnuczką.

The grandson should not be mixed, the grandson should be taught to speak Polish to keep the culture and heritage and respect for elders, the son should come to the airport and pick his father up as well as welcome him at the airport. My father was first generation American with Polish immigrant parents. They spoke only Polish at home until the children (including my father) started school. Then they switched to English only. As an adult, my father could understand a little Polish but never taught it to his children. I know a few words but I’m not anywhere near conversational. Merry Christmas!!

It also shows a very efficient way of learning English, but nothing beats "zadzwoń do mamy" commercial, which is very, very old. Almost no one uses Amazon in Poland, Allegro also kicked eBay out of Poland. There is also a nice Christmas commercial where a child sings "silent night" on the phone, but I don't remember what company it was, and I can't find it anywhere. Maybe someone knows?

I once reI once read about research on language transmission in blended families. The result - regardless of the language of the country they live in, children are much more likely to pick up the language their mother uses. When you think about it more deeply, it's not surprising. Mothers have a closer relationship with their children from the beginning, even when children learn to speak and say their first words. Women also communicate more with words. Yes, they are talkative - it's a real stereotype. 😉

My grandparents emmigrated to the U.S. in the early 1900's. They spoke Polish to my parents, and as children, we learned the basic "please, thank you, good morning, good night, good Byrd and that was about it. Their outlook was, "you're Americans, speak English.

@@ipodman1910Same situation but understand this- first, they were discriminated against for even having an accent, they didn’t want their kids to go through this ( though both of my parents spoke Polish and Ukrainian like natives). Secondly, they were very proud of their “ new” heritage and wanted theirs kids to be also. My Polish grandfather taught himself to read and speak English as did my Ukrainian grandfather who spoke and could read and write five other languages. BTW I also speak and can read several languages including Ukrainian, Russian, and Polish. I’m sure Pan Romanowski’s grandparents are proud of their children and grandchildren.

Having grown up in a mixed ethnic area and traveled very extensively, I have met many friendly people and not so friendly people in many countries including Poland who were not at all tolerant and welcoming to individuals from a different country. You also don’t know me so you have absolutely no idea how hard or not I have worked for my language skills. I can tell you that even though my parents spoke Polish and Ukrainian, they did not speak Russian, French, Spanish, or Swahili, I had to work and learn these through my own efforts so I don’t brag about it but I am proud of it. My only point in response to your original post was there were legitimate reasons for immigrants insisting on their children speaking the language of their “new” country wherever that happened to be. I don’t “assume” westenrs are xenophobic - they simply are xenophobic - for example French are famous for it, same as Britons but a bit less, while I was not mentioning any Asian nations while that is another ballpark. I was talking about Poland versus west. You cannot use your anecdotal experiences with overall experience of foreigners coming to Poland and loving friendliness and openness while there is a hate campaign against Poland - historical one and current one to smear Poles as intolerant. Facts are facts. Also - foreign kids in Polish schools don’t have to learn Polish to avoid being discriminated like in the west (here you’re confirming my point about the west). 7.27 If the child lives abroad and the mother is Polish, the child will naturally be in a better place to at least understand the second language as the mother is more likely to speak to the child at home whereas the father is out at work all day. However, as the child grows up, goes to school and meets English speaking children with whom he/she becomes friends, Polish is going to be more or less 'out of the window.' Also now in England we are experiencing mass immigration and as I sit on the bus I see Eastern European mothers with their offspring getting on and off the busses and more often than not, they are speaking English with their children and not their mother tongue, whatever that may be. These mothers obviously realize that their mother tongue is not a good investment in the U.K. If you want to go to university in England or want t good career job, the Polish language is not going to give you much mileage over here! Added to this is the fact that I know Polish and even have a Polish language certificate B1 but can only stay in Poland for a maximum of ninety days in any 180. On the other hand, my son automatically qualified for a Polish passport through blood line even though he has no interest in the country or it's language whatsoever.

Na wakacje jechal do Polski, raz w roku., kiedy kupil tanie bilety Na Swieta bilety byly za drogie,. Potem poznal kobiete o innym kolorze skory i mial z nia syna. Syna nie nauczyl mowic po polsku, bo musieli oboje pracowac, zeby zarobic na splaty domu, a syna wychowywalo przedszkole... Wiecej dzieci nie maja i nie beda miec do ich nie stac. W tym czasie Dziadkowie sie starzeja, podupadaja na zdrowiu. Mama ciezko choruje, ale Syn nie moze byc przy niejc nawet w krytycznym czasie, bo ma tylko kilka tygodni uropu. Rodzicom jest ciezko, dom coraz bardziej zaniedbany.,.. Niikt nie przyjezdza na niedzielny obiad. Nikt ich nie odwiedza, bo mieli tylko ukochanego Syna-Jedynaka. Sasiedzi z klatki juz przestaja poznawac Syna, kiedy ten przyjezdza odwiedzic schorowanych, starych rodzicow...Tyle lat. Synowa nie umie sie z Tesciami porozumiec, nie rozumie tradycji, przekonan i zwyczajow. Nie zna jezyka i nie ma szans sie go nigdy nauczyc... Mama odchodzi z tego Swiata a Ojciec jest sam i popada w depresje... Syn nie wie, co mu powiedziec, kiedy do niego dzwoni... Dlatego dzwoni juz tylko raz na miesiac, albo na imieniny... Wnuk nie ma zwiazkow z Polska, to jakis egzotyczny, zacofany kraj na Wschodzie, pelen blokowisk i podobno rasistowski... Nie bedzie przyjezdzal do Polski, bo nie ma po co... Nic go tu nie kreci...Nie zna jezyka, historii, tradycji. Nie lubi jedzenia. Nie czuje zadnego zwiazkiu. Pokolenia najlepszych Polakow wyjechaly z Polski w 2005-209 i juz nie wroica. Sa stracone. Dziadzius spedza starosc samotnie, gapiac sie w okno i karmiac golebie. ..

Sorry that you don't understand... let me explain... the guy in the clip is a Pole. A Polish grandpa. In order to understand his granddaughter and be able to travel abroad by himself he decides to learn English. So he orders a set to learn English through Allegro (that is as popular in Poland as Amazon is everywhere else).
