This song makes me cry every time. A dear friend of mine played Tracy Turnblad in our community theater performance of Hairspray. She was literally born to play the role, she blew everyone away and carried the entire show. It was the last role she ever played. Only a few weeks after the show closed, she died unexpectedly of complications from a routine gallbladder removal surgery. She was 22. Her parents buried her in the blue dress she wore for this number, and every time I think about her, I see her in that dress. That was 10 years ago, and I still cannot hear this song without crying. I'm crying right now just typing this. RIP Kat 💝💝💝

My sister was interracial and she and I watched this together. She was so excited. She wast a good dancer and coo carry a note but always tries with me since I was in chorus and could carry a bite well. So we sang at the top of our lungs while bopping around my living room. We. We never watched movies or did singing at my parents where she still lived because my mother would have made us sit like ladies as she would say. We did it my house where we could do whatever the bell we wanted and had my two toddlers join us for more fun. They loved their aunt meri so woo dance with her while trying to sing the songs. she died about 8 years ago now and I miss the fun we used to to have all the time on our own without our family interfering with negativity as they were prone todo with about a owe did . I moved 8 hours away soon afterwards and she got into drugs and booze. I raised her baby girl soon after she was born because of her addiction problem but loved doing that for her. Not one of my other sisters would help her, nor my pay the way they took in a brothers baby, so I and my husband went back to get the baby to take her home. My sister knew she was going to be loved and cared for as if she were our own we had her for almos 1:35 her first year year her back to her mommy. We surprised my sister and I can still see and recall her to finally have her baby back. I will never regret surprising her. It was so wonderful to see my sisters shocked and she her crying over her daughter. My mother had to say something of course because I didn’t let her know I was bringing the baby back and my sister still lived at home so my mother was very pissed off at me for not telling her ahead of time. I knew better than to fill her in before hand because she would have said no, in fact she told me to take the baby back home with out wver holding her or even asking to hold her ! My mother was a selfish conceited woman and very self centered. Everything was always about her wants and no concerns for another person. All her way or no way. I asked my father once how did he dealt with her constantly and he said I value my life so I will never answer that. I laughed and figured out he just always said yes and when she was confronted with anything she didn’t like she would turn the water works imo had used to feel sorry for him until it Dawes on me one day he allowed her to abuse and took her shit with out ever saying anything or demanding she stop her crap. I don’t know when he actually started letting her abuse and use him like some donkey possibly before I was even born in 58. I was an accident so I felt it as a Ty child that I was not wanted. She made it quite clear how she felt about me I was in my 49’s before I ever stood up to her and she was shocked while I was laughing on my insides at feeling so proud to stand up to her finally. My father waaa dead by then or he would’ve made me go apologize and do what she demanded. I hated dealing with my father and how he always gave in to her for everything no matter how small and/ or selfish it was! And I was ent about to upset my sister! Who was so excited she had been so depressed over missing her baby so much my one brother claimed that was the first time in months any one had sent her smile so no way was I taking the baby back! It was a few months later that I discovered my sister was bay on drugs and alcohol and had been when I brought the baby back . The whole family knew it yet no one warned me most knew I was bro the baby back yet all agreed with me not saying anything to our my mother. Even now 3@ plus odd years later I have no regrets on how I did anything. I never had my niece again even when I knew I should’ve taken her back as a elementary school kid when I discovered my situation was abusing her due to being drunk and stoned so often, but my niece was refusing to even come cut us for a weekend my sister would refuse to hand her back to us because she was goworse and high constantly ! A few years later we had my nieces infant son who was born addicted to drugs and social services removed him from her in the hospital I had moved back home but to the inside of the state and made arrangements to take my great nephew who I had for 5 months before they gave him back to my niece who ran to a different state with him with him with in days of geo him back .I knew they were making a mistake by returning him especially since his ago was a wacky a doodle and diotake his medicines . He was after me anyway, but I wasn’t afraid of the loser. He was ago of me. He’s dead from my understanding like my sister they OD’ I know he loved his son but he was too messed up to care for him even on visitations times . I always got the baby back with dirty clothes and nothing that I sent him dressed in. His diaper was always soaking wet like he had Enever changed his diaper all day or his clothes. He always kept any I sent him wearing and sent him back wearing old filthy clothes that were way too small as if someone gave them to him specifically so he could keep the beautiful clothes I sent him in. The agents stopped the fathers visits in a matter of a few months after they started he wasn’t well enough to care for him even for a day so theyvgaihim back to my niece who was back in drugs and was now gay and living with some girl who was another loser like his father it’s been almost 10 years and I have net send oe heard from my niece once. My dad doesso keeps me informed. My niece is always in hiding so social services can take him away from her . I know she fell apart after my sister died as much as my w wasn’t a good mother my niece was too depend on her for everything! But I miss watching the movies with my sister so much! I’m sure she watched them with her also! And that’s ok! It’s a shame she Leo before her grand son got to know her. He was only 1 T she died my niwas fur ious wit me for not taking him to her funeral, but a one year old has no place at a funeral! So I refused to bring him up state that day. The social worker was angry wit me and try to make me, but I refused and kept him with us here! With in a few weeks they return ed him to his mother who was back on drugs so I reported the agency to the state I lost and then told them to stick my lisencw up their asses! And we stopped doing foster care I refuse to work with shitty agency’s and even shittier workers! Their loss we were a very experienced home with a. Vast amount of years in two states with experience with a wide variety of problems in children . Again their loss I miss fostering, but Refuse to deal with those ignorant idiots who claim to put the children first but never do. They lie all the Tim and think of only their issues not the kids! They are sick and a disgrace for an agency ahoy to care for kids when in reality they out all their needs and wants first! the child needs come last! Always!

I remember when I saw Twitch on So You Think You Can Dance season 4 when he was a contestant I immediately recognized him because of Hairspray. It was also the first season I started watching SYTYCD so that was cool to see him there and now, he's one of the judges. This song/scene is just fun. I mean come on, you can't go wrong with John Travolta in plus size drag and Queen Latifah rocking a blonde wig.

John Travolta took over this character and followed after the drag queen Divine's portrayal with grace, it's such a lovely remake and it's much more kid friendly. I highly recommend watching the original once you've hit 18 cause this hits the love and beauty and the predecessor hit all the harsh truths of the past along with the violence. Though the original isn't a musical it is an amazing movie that shows the true fight for integration where this showed the love found and diversity accomplished with joy with integration.
