Positive camber when the tire leans outward to put more load on outside tread, negative if top of tire is further under fender and would load the inside tread. caster is almost always positive with few rare exceptions. Caster is an angle between spindle pivot points which is the two ball joints on double control arm types and ball joint and upper strut mount center on MacPherson strut type. The line between those two joints will intersect ground in front of tire in direction of travel. The other angle involved is Steering Axis Inclination ,SAI, and also known as KPI from when vehicles had kingpins. This is an angle in a 90 degree turned axis between spindle support points. This usually will be a line that would strike ground outside the center of lower ball joint. Greater SAI gives stronger return to center when wheel is released but also gives more kick into wheel as the leverage for force striking wheel is greater. Positive caster and the SAI will yield a torque that makes each front wheel turn to center. SAI is affected by camber setting as that changes the ball joint angle in that plane. Balanced caster and camber between left and right will yield a turn to center balance or equilibrium and car should go straight on a perfect road with no lane crown. A common practice on RWD vehicles is to give the right side a small amount more caster to offset the crown (slope) built into road to make water drain. This would make car drive straight in rh lane and add a faint amount of steering correction for lh lane travel.

You got lucky. First, on your vehicle your brackets are on side of frame so they are easier to get to. My 94 Silverado has them located on top of frame. Second, and mostly, mine didn’t break out near as easily. Air hammer, chisel, channel locks; then more of the same. In the end, had to polish holes with a bit to get bolts to go all the way to each end. Congrats.

I, like you, own a GMT400 truck, specifically I have a 1997 C1500 Silverado. The truck is 26 years old, has 250,000 miles, and I’ve had all the control arm bushings replaced, so naturally I thought I was being fucked with when the alignment shop said they couldn’t set my camber, and then quoted almost $300 to remove “factory knockouts.” Seeing what I need to do now, I think I’ll just give them $300 lol.

Both are very clean trucks with upgrades. They definitely stand out and have no plans or desire in getting anything newer! Last of the square style trucks. Can't beat the classic look!!!

Done many of those knock outs and find it easier to use a 22 mm wrench 🔧 to pop them out Using the open end to push them out. Sometimes they didn’t stamp them good from the factory so that’s when you have to used a air hammer to knock them out but still leaves pieces that have to be cleaned up with a carbon bit. I always hated doing the knock outs. And I’ve seen them all the way a far as 1998 Chevy and GMC 🙂✌️

TOMAS They hold the vehicle to the factory alignment specifications. After time the suspension loosens up and wears in So the tabs that we call knockouts have to be knocked out in order to set the vehicle back to the factory specifications The only problem is when you remove the tabs it is much easier for the control arm to be knocked out of alignment when hitting a potholes. Usually charge about half hour to one hour each side on top of the price of alignment

What you had was positive camber (or so it looked like to me). Positive camber happens when the top of the tire is "going away" from the vehicle. That does not help in tight bends. Negative camber is what is usually required by most vehicles on the roads, it happens when the top of tire goes towards the frame of the vehicle Some vehicles need positive camber, usually trucks and vans, as it is needed for heavy cargo, when the vehicle is loaded the camber becomes negative, granted it ever so slightly. You also have some other angles in the suspension of the vehicle and steering of the vehicle. They need be well tuned in order for some good corners and good handling, as well as safe motoring. In some countries (Portugal for example) the steering needs to be aligned so that the vehicle will pass mandatory periodic inspection. Doing an alignment with a piece of string is not a way to do an alignment at all, it is only good enough to get to an alignment. An alignment is milimetric, it needs to be done correctly. I hope this information suits and helps you. Cheers.

You have what is known as a short long arm suspension up front.... so basically the more your truck "squats" in the front the bottom kicks out more causing wear on inside... also when you lift the front it sucks the bottom of the tire in causing wear on outside.... also the "toe" will change meaning the front of the tires will either turn in toward each other causing wear on outer edge of tire or away from each other causing wear on the insides.... basically have an alignment done when any change is performed, and or regularly (like when you get tires)..... like springs in a bed with a fat person never getting off, your springs or torsion bars are gonna sag over time

Since you didn't show it, I think anyone considering tightening their torsion bar key to raise their vehicle; Raise your front wheels of the ground and count your your torsion bar key bolt turns when making this adjustment. If you don't, you won't be the first guy who stripped or broke that bolt but you'll be just a PO'd anyway. Word to the wise.

Also known as "knockouts" the vehicles are not aligned on the assy. line. They use these knockouts as a general rule of alignment when assembling the vehicles. Modern GM's use of plastic inserts. Easy to look at and see if a full proper alignment has been performed.

@chrissupport

I went to an alignment shop yesterday and the guy said yes - that it can't be aligned properly otherwise. It's possible they don't have to be adjusted so much w/stock height, but the cam in slotted side can't be adjusted more than ~1/8" (the amount of slop between cam washer and mount/bracket. My truck runs straight, but I want to knock them out so caster can be adjusted if needed.

Steering tires should be tilted slightly inwards at the top and at the front. That is because in order to enable the steering tires to turn there must be some free-play in all of the moving joints. That way when the tires start rotating, centrifugal force will cause the wheel to straighten up and hold firm against against the joints so the wheel does not wobble at speed.
