As a kid in the 70s the Planet of the Apes movies were interesting because of the apes. However, as an adult you start understanding the depth of this movie and, as you put it so well, the great storytelling in this film. Some of my favorite points of this movie: 1) Taylor, the ultimate misanthrope, is forced to defend humanity throughout the movie once the first hunt ends. What irony. 2) Look at Taylor's face while Cornelius reads the 29th scroll. He knows these words could've come from himself only a short time ago. He's stunned. 3) Also, as far as the ending, the quote from Einstein I think applies: "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones".

I saw this movie in the movies when I was 10 or 11 and at the time this was the most innovative movies out there. It is rated as one of the best movies of all time. I know you find it funny but at the time the world found it serious and ground breaking. It was also the first movie that I heard the use of the word "Damn". Cursing just wasn't a thing in many movies of the time, that changed in the 70's. Believe it or not it was rated G at the time. The ending took everyone by surprise. It may look like a comedy to you, but for those of us unsophisticated humans born in the late 50's, this movie was the height of excitement, creativity and intrigue. 1968 was a great year for movies including 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Probably the strongest role to see Charlton Heston is as the lead in “Ben-Hur.” Also if you want to see special FX from 1959 that would still amaze anyone today, this film has scenes which have never been replicated. Other famous roles are as Moses in The Ten Commandments and as the lead in Orson Welles masterpiece “Touch of Evil.” (A note on that, in case viewers today become upset, originally he was to play an American character, but the script, story, casting, etc was changed but the studios and producers would not allow Heston as the main bankable star to be replaced, so Heston played a Mexican.)

Using the NASA logo would have had massive political implications in 1968. They probably could have done it anyway, but there wasn't much reason to want to yet. When this movie was in production, the Space Race was undecided, and plenty of things had already gone wrong for NASA.

In the guidebooks for the fictional universe of "Planet of the Apes," ANSA split off from NASA because of Communist infiltration of the original organization. Stewart's fate (which causes her to miss the adventure entirely) reminds me of Chapman in "The Bridge on the River Kwai," who doesn't survive the parachute jump (leaving things to Joyce, Shears and Warden). One day I want to write a story with a character named "Stewart Chapman," paying tribute to them both.

The first was the best one due to the hard work put into it. And the much bigger budget. however, the last movie in the series Battle for the Planet of the Apes had a great ending tag. It jumps ahead like 500 years, I guess. I don't want to spoil it for anyone. It has a good ending to the whole series. In the original a virus came back with astronauts from space. That caused all the cats and dogs to die off. Hence Man wanted new pets to love. Somehow the apes evolved but man first made them servants. Then simply slaves and they finally rebelled toward most humans. Not all humans were bad to them though. This was the first movie series who made millions off merchandising from 1968-75/76. Tons of trading cards, posters, comic books, models, costumes, trash cans you name it. I was like six years old when I saw this in 1968.

I hope you'll consider reacting to all 5 of the OG movies. (Release order is the right chronology.) My personal favorite, for the set design and world building, is the second. (It gets bashed, and probably is one of the weaker movies overall, but I still like it.) The third and fourth are the most critical for the "canon", and I think they were better received by the public. The fifth movie as a few merits, but overall, that is when the movies "jumped the shark". The live-action television series as well as the cartoon were great when I was a kid and the whole phenomenon was happening. I even had the "tree-fort" play set, action figures and everything. I also liked the make-up design for the 2001 Tim Burton "re-envisioning", even though it breaks canon completely.

To answer your first question first.... Yes, you SHOULD watch all 5 movies in this series. If for no other reason than to be fully informed (despite the naysayers) about where all of the subsequent movies got much of their lore. To answer your second question.... THAT depends on how you take the lore and timeline..... Just watch them in release order, would be MY advice. There's a reason they came out that way. 4:25 - More or less. Her "pod" cracked, causing her sealed environment to be compromised. As Taylor says shortly, "she died in her sleep". 6:00 - Another Reaction channel pointed out something that I hadn't even considered for over 50 years. Planting that flag may not have been about "claiming this planet for the US", but rather as a "memorial for Stewart". If the former, I understand Taylor's laughter (because there wasn't a United States left to claim the planet for), but if the former.... then it WAS a bit "late for a wake".... 8:30 - Remember, this movie was rated G, for General Audiences. In the 1970s when it was shown on television, them "nekkid butts" weren't blurred out. 10:00 - Okay, I'm going to say this ONE time..... these are APES, not MONKEYS. There's a difference. Google it if you need to. 30:30 - Yes, you did.... but there were also a lot of clues dropped along the way. But good on you for picking them up. You're also right about something else, Dr. Zaius DID know the true history of the planet, besides the "Sacred Scrolls". But he was among a very small group of guardians of that knowledge, charged with protecting that massive secret, and thus keeping Ape civilization at pretty much a stand-still. He didn't want apes to make the same mistakes that humans had made when they ruled the planet. What better way to do so, than to keep their "technology level" at the bare minimum? Also, while very derided by much of the fandom (myself aside), the first sequel explains a lot more of the planet's history. Personally, I love Beneath the Planet of the Apes, and always have. It is one of my favorites of the series, because of the added lore.

Great reaction. Just so you'll know, the film "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" (1971) answers your question of how apes gained intelligence. (edit) My high school Literature 102 class actually did a book report on the story this sequel is based on. Also, if you've read *Batman: The Dark Knight Returns* (1986), that graphic novel explains why horses are the best functioning animals available. They were the only means of travel in *Gotham City* after *Superman* failed to stop a nuclear detonation.

18:02 Cornelius is trying to get Zira to back off a bit. He is concerned that if she makes too much trouble, their jobs would be in jeopardy. Even back then there was the pressure of "cancel culture". The scene of the Statue of Liberty was shot near Zuma Beach in Malibu.

The sequels will answer some questions.

I want whatever battery is in that doll that allows it to still work after 2 millennia.
@Marveryn6 ай бұрын
it did not use battery, If you notice there was a string in the back. so its uses gears.

There were dolls made with a voice box inside that used no batteries. If you moved it right, gravity would activate it.

Enjoyed your reaction. Since you liked this you should try Logan’s Run. Another fun sci-fi from the seventies.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes is the only other one in the series of five that is definitely worth watching.

After about 3750+ years of erosion, the Statue would sink if lucky but most likely is would fall apart.

Well at almost 25:00 you ask how it became like that. You will know if you watch the other 4 movies.

Movie 2 and 3, especially 3, are worth watching. The 4 was not bad. the 5 is not worth to watch; The TV serie of the seventies is interesting, remembered by a lot of fans, based on that movie serie ! .

I love the original 1968 film and some of the following films in the original series but I also very much so love the Caesar reboot trilogy and I'm excited to see how Noa and Mae's story (the new main characters for the new trilogy) will continue. I really want to see more ape clans as Proximus couldn't have captured them all.

Please do continue the Apes movies particulary with the next one which is one of my all time favourites and the fifth one the only "Apes" movie I'd ignore is the 2001 remake.

The first is the best. My favorite of the sequels is the fourth, Conquest. You should definitely check out the sequels if you want to deep dive the lore. Two are fan favorites

I knew you'd like this. You've just experienced classic Rod Serling storytelling. This plays out like a 90 minute episode of the Twilight Zone with a much larger budget. Rod Serling wrote Twilight Zone. The makeup for this movie won an academy award. Yes you'll want to watch the sequels. Thry fill out the story arc. If you can power through the second one the rest are easy.

What's wrong with the second film? It was great. It should have ended with beneath. The rest of the films was a cash cow. But i did enjoy them! But escape was just hard to believe that the apes got there.

Rod Serling was NOT actually responsible for the finished script and his influence on this film was very minimal. Stop pushing this myth! When he adapted the novel, his treatment was a very faithful adaptation, but it was too expensive to film. The book was very different, it was an advanced ape society set in a NYC-like metropolis. So, the other writer Michael Wilson (who's considered one of greatest screenwriters of all time) was brought in to scale down the story to a primitive ape society, which of course changed the whole theme of the story with apes living in a dogmatic society rather than a technologically progressive one. The whole story of Taylor being persecuted by this religious ape cult was based on Wilson's own experiences when he was blacklisted in Hollywood for his political views. The characters' names changed, all the dialogue was Michael Wilson's, the themes, the overall plot, the philosophical discussions, the situations etc. are all Michael Wilson. Even Serling credited 95% of the finished script to Wilson and said it wasn't really his movie. But the studio wanted to honor him for his contributions. The only thing really credited to Serling was the idea for the ending, which he used in a previous Twilight Zone episode. Although, the reveal of the Statue of Liberty was different in Serling's script. It was not the "You blew it up, D you all to H" moment as written in the film.
