Colored smoke is not used only in preparation of some kind of attack. A team on the ground preparing for the arrival of approaching helicopters, for instance, could verify their identity using a pre-arranged color of smoke to mark their position for pickup. A group emerging from a treeline might do the same to verify themselves to friendly forces who might not know their exact line of approach. It could also be used simply to screen movement from enemy observation, just as easily as white smoke. Color could mean nothing, or it could mean whatever two or more groups had pre-arranged for it to mean, oftentimes via radio communications just before using the announced color. Smoke color is never prearranged as it can compromise mission integrity. Instead, a smoke is thrown, the bird will say “I got purple smoke” and the requester will say something like “purple smoke confirmed”. Other than that this checks out.

I was taught that if you’re popping coloured smoke for communication with aircraft, the procedure is as follows: 1: Select color 2: Inform via radio “(Aircraft Callsign) this is (Callsign), Smoke on (target/exfil/etc.)” *without* identifying the colour of the smoke. 3: Aircraft responds, “(Callsign) this is (Aircraft Callsign), I mark (colour) smoke, confirm?” 4: Radio “(Aircraft Callsign) this is (Callsign), Affirmative, (colour) smoke is (target/exfil/etc.)” or else something like “Negative, that is not (target/exfil/etc)” The rationale, I was told, is that if the enemy is able to hear your comms then they could confuse the situation by using their own smoke - that’s harder for them to effectively do if you let the friendly aircraft confirm the colour first.

I think one of the most important parts of this scene is that this is the most significant part of the series where Brad loses his cool. He gets pissed off a few times previously (notably with Encino Man), but he full out berates a team member in front of the whole platoon. For all the other times Brad is as cool as a cucumber, that's a pretty big deal.

You can also tell he immediately regrets going off on Walt, asking Walt if he was ok. To give Walt credit, he was sleep deprived, stressed, and on top of that his squad is operating a new SOP he’s unfamiliar with. Just look at that man’s thousand mile stare and the regret he has afterwards, he isn’t all there. Brad kinda realizes immediately that he has blame in this too for not looking after his people, and not realizing something’s wrong until too late.

The Bible says in Revelation 18:23 that the entire world is deceived by Babylonian sorcery. Look into the origins of holidays like 🎄 🎅 🎃 🐰. These are pagan holidays that serve other gods which God hates. Romans 1:22-27 says that serving false gods with these holidays is the reason why we're living in Sodom and Gomorrah right now. If you do not repent from these holidays you will be deemed an idolater on judgement day, so if you don't want to burn in everlasting fire then you need to repent from this wickedness that Satan has deceived you into doing. Then go pick up the Bible and start reading it from Genesis to Revelation, because you will be destroyed for rejecting God's knowledge. Did you know that you're supposed to be keeping the Saturday Sabbath? Read Exodus 31:16-17. That commandment is forever, meaning you're still supposed to keep it today. Did you know that you're not supposed to be eating pork? Go read Isaiah 66:15-17. God will consume unclean eaters with fire in the tribulation. Did you know that the Bible explicitly forbids putting up a Christmas tree? Read Jeremiah 10:1-5. Do you wanna know why the government is so terrible? It's because God is using it to punish his wicked, covenant-breaking people. Read Leviticus 26. This punishment was prophesied thousands of years ago. Read Romans 13. You speaking evil against the government is helping nothing. If you actually want to be protected then start obeying the holy covenant - the ten commandments. You do not have a lot of time left. Pride goes before destruction and we are at delusional levels of it. Judgement is coming to the house of God first so you better be prepared before tribulation comes to a stiffnecked people who hate God's commandments and reject his word. Because you are not getting raptured if you're ignoring everything God is telling you. If you don't want to be told depart from me I never knew you then you better start getting to work.

A key error IRL was early failure to post LARGE LEGIBLE signage in Arabic ordering vehicles to halt. Remember civilians don't know what to do at roadblocks unless they're told in the simplest possible terms. Simple barriers would also indicate halting was required. Also remember the US trained for ground combat not policing, and that invading Iraq in the first place was a catastrophic mistake which diverted forces best used as deterrents to nation-state war. Nothing was learned from Viet Nam (I was alive then but enlisted much later in '81)) and nothing lasting will be learned from GWOT because when those involved retire the next batch of exceptionalists will do something like it yet again. The US does not produce introspective militarily literate civilians and that prevents elevation of anyone challenging orthodoxy du jour.

Context more so irl. Soldiers invade another part of the world. Occupy a city, close it down. The people living there don't speak their language, don't know them, they are invaders for them. The soldiers closed down the main route which they would have to use, they are armed, it's unknown what they want. That blue smoke makes everything clear. That road is closed down and there is no passing it. It's not a border check or anything. This is why it's important. US soldiers, EU, or other soldiers, doesn't matter, are all invaders in these parts of the worlds, with whatever reasons they are there. So it does help.

@@RockPile_ don’t be like them. We should pity them the way that Frodo pities Gollum. They are victims too. I’m talking about the soldiers. They were poor kids who were lied to their entire lives, fed a false history, tricked into risking their lives to commit atrocities or aid and abet them. In America our anti-war movement would be unrecognizable without all of our veterans who learned the truth, and then spent the rest of their lives opposing the wars.

Firstly, you've got to understand that Iraqi civilians were much more used to the sight of soldiers and tanks on the street, and were also used to being able to drive past them without being shot at. Secondly, PANIC. Stress and adrenaline, contrary to what movies claim, does not make you a rational, lightning-fast expert driver. 90% of the time, it turns you into a gibbering, clumsy idiot. That's why soldiers TRAIN - it is all about suppressing the fight-or-flight response, and replacing it with engrained muscle memory, so that everything becomes automatic.

@@biggiouschinnus7489 ok sure but when you see a big ass convoy that pops smoke or fires at you maybe fucking brake not hit the gas. I was a 0311 and yea training helps but id argue the normal human response to seeing a threat like that is to stop not fucking hit the gas towards the people trying to kill you.

@@VanTheMan1099 Scared people do stupid things, that's all I can say. It's sad, and I don't blame you guys for it - you were just where you were ordered to be, and didn't have anything like the support - police, interpreters, local knowledge, detailed intelligence - you should have had. Likewise, I don't blame the Iraqi civilians either - they never asked for any of this, and were just trying to go about their daily lives. The blame lies with the brass and politicians, who should have realised that this shit was going to happen, and planned for it.

@@dragonstormdipro1013 yes in this scene no warning shots are fired. I’m talking about the broader context. This type of shit routinely happens. Where the Iraqis will try to run a checkpoint or won’t respond to any warnings. It just baffles me. And yea we can have the moral debate of occupation and whatnot. But when someone has a fiftycal pointed at you basic human logic isn’t to try and run through it.

Generation Kill is favorite because it depicts the reality of war. I went to serve at my country’s national service, which requires selected 18 year olds to raise patriotism and learn basic combat. We were sleep deprived too and boy it sucked! Imagine the real army training.
