Herzog really let Cage go on this one. Despite that, shooting on location in areas damaged by Hurricane Katrina had a documentary like impact on the movie. I always champion this. It’s a perfect marriage of Herzog’s humanism (and absurdity) and Cage’s absurdity as an actor. I laughed more times in this scene than most comedies.

4:35 - This was the moment Bad Lieutenant 2 finally clicked with me. And it’s pretty far along in the movie too. I deeply respect Herzog as a filmmaker but up until this scene I wasn’t impressed. I just couldn’t get a handle on it. What the hell was Herzog going for? What compelled him to make this film in the first place? It’s obvious from the beginning that Cage’s character is completely tapped. But realizing he really can “see” that dead guy’s breakdancing soul is a great reveal. And then insisting it also needs to be shot is f-ing gold. He’s even more tweaked than we thought. This scene was the key that unlocked the movie for me. I often wonder that all the time! This whole movie really! Whenever it's on I watch it. It reminds me of a 70s b flick with way better cameras. The plot is just so jumbled, the random characters, the iguanas.... (that is as random as it gets, and it is never explained or mentioned)
