True. You don't HAVE to abstain, but neither do you HAVE to release. If you aren't somehow curious about or interested in abstaining, though, why would you be reading The Freedom Model? My own experience was that, the more I experimented with abstaining and became increasingly familiar and at ease with it (even occasionally or intermittently), the more I wanted to do more of it. I cultivated that until I knew that I was ready to do it exclusively and not release anymore. Someone else might be satisfied with a different result. After all, if the grading scale went from A to Z, some students would be satisfied with a Y.
