Écrite par Kenny Gamble et Leon Huff, la chanson If you don't know me by now était destinée à la voix de Patti Labelle qui n'a pas voulu l'enregistrer.
Les deux auteurs, déçus mais pas découragés, sont allés proposer, après quelques aménagements, leur chanson au groupe The Dells, un groupe qui avait un certain succès en interprétant de la soul, du jazz et plus tard du disco, mais celui-ci ne s'est pas montré plus chaleureux envers la chanson et, comme Patti, et il n'a pas jugé intéressant d'enregistrer ce titre.
C'est ainsi qu'en troisième main, la chanson arrive aux mains du groupe Harold Melvin & The Bleu Notes, le groupe le plus populaire de Philadelphie au cours des années 70, et c'est grâce, notamment, à la voix magnifique de Teddy Pendergrass que la chanson connait une telle force qu'elle déploie ses ailes et s'envole sur les ondes des radios du monde entier avant que, suite à des désaccords persistants entre Melvin et Teddy, ce dernier quitte le groupe pour poursuivre une carrière solo.
Quelques années plus tard, Patti Labelle reconnaitra implicitement son erreur en incluant, après une légère adaptation, If you don't know me by now dans son tour de chant. Elle finira également par enregistrer une version en public (on dit live de nos jours) dans son album Patti, sorti en 1985.
La chanson, considérée par la très respectable RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) comme étant une des chansons du siècle, connaitra un nouvel envol mondial avec Simply Red, en 1989, si bien qu'If you don't know me by now se glissera aux premiers places de tous les classement de ventes de par le monde.
Plus récemment, en 2009, Seal aussi a décidé de l'inclure dans son répertoire et a atteint avec If you don't know me by now son meilleur classement depuis Love's Divine, sorti en 2004.

The two authors, disappointed but not discouraged, went propose, after some adjustments, their song group The Dells, a group that had some success in interpreting soul, jazz and later disco, but it does not show warm to the song and like Patti, and he did not consider it worthwhile to save the title.
Thus in third hand, the song reaches the hands of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes group, the most popular group in Philadelphia in the 70s, and thanks notably to the beautiful voice Teddy Pendergrass song knows that such force that it spreads its wings and flies away on the waves of radio stations worldwide before, after persistent disagreements between Melvin and Teddy, the latter left the band to pursue a solo career .
A few years later, Patti Labelle implicitly recognize his error by including after a slight adaptation, If you do not know me by now in his singing tour. It also will eventually record a public version (live we say today) Patti in her album, released in 1985.
The song, considered by respectable RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) as being one of the songs of the century, will know a new world flight with Simply Red in 1989 qu'If so you do not know me by now is slide to the first seats of all sales ranking of the world.
More recently, in 2009, Seal has also decided to include it in its directory and reached with If you do not know me by now his best ranking since Love's Divine, released in 2004.
