Hello Ron, I've been meaning to comment here for some time. I've driven box trucks, flatbeds with boxes of all sorts and utility bodies. I've even used trailers with shelving, drawers and cabinets. No locks on the drawers or doors in the trailers and box trucks. Minimal strips from 1/2 to 3/4 inch tall and never had anything fall out. No broken axles, springs or anything like that. Been on rough sights and roads and even lost it a few times and still no disturbance. Have even been known to leave stuff on the bed of open flatbeds and still be there hours and hundreds of miles later to the job. Thanks for all the inspiration. Been watching all your videos and plan on buying your plans for workbenches and a trailer of my own.

I began emulating Ron several years ago. He knows exactly what he's doing. The fact he has the time to share all this should tell you something. Say what you want, he changed my life. Ups and fed ex haul random stuff every day in thousands of trucks, you can get your tools to the job with minimal chaos. You just can't be sloppy when you load up and expect good results.

Thanks for the videos Ron. I've got my trailer very similar to yours but I use the festool systainers and the only thing that holds them in is a small 3/4" piece of plywood. The only straps I use are on my table saw and miter saw because I haven't had the time to build your table and miter stand but I do already have a spot in my trailer for them. I have all of my stuff in a 6x12 tandem Axel trailer thanks to your videos. I love it, it so easy to pull with my F150 and easy to park. I would add a pic but couldn't figure out how to do it here.

Just found this video, I will be looking into your design and probably even using portions of it in my trailer. As for the clamps, I came up with a simple solution when you mentioned the potential problem. Can't wait to combine your design with my spur of the moment ideas!

I think you made a good point that you drive slow and steady. You also live and work on an island? I’m creating a single axle work trailer from my stock Featherlite trailer with a motorcycle ramp and a side door. I know you don’t like side doors, they are convenient but they are not as secure. I’m also planning on using boxes and shelves with my festool systainers. I’m thinking of doing conventional draw slides and possibly magnets attached to the rear of the draw boxes and then a catch to keep everything from flying open. I have at least on one occasion swerved the trailer when a bicyclist decided to turn in front of the vehicle. All the cargo went flying and I was going 15mph under the speed limit.
@TheOneWhoMightBe
@TheOneWhoMightBe 5 жыл бұрын
I know this is a 7 month old comment, but I just thought that I'd reply and suggest not using conventional (ball bearing) drawer slides. I'm making a bunch of mobile cabinets here at home and the cost of the slides has doubled the project cost. I already had most of the drawers built but if I were to do it again I'd modify the drawers (glue and dowel runners on or something) so they could be used Paulk-style. Ron's solution costs almost nothing in materials and really the only significant cost is the time taken to make the jig.

When I built my trailer I used a lot of ideas from your series on designing and building ART. The tool shelves and drawers are the same as you had in ART and my things stay in place like yours do. We don't drive on the same roads. Many of my jobs are at remote camps that involve 10 or more miles of gravel logging roads with potholes and washouts. Things still stay in place. The shelves in my old box truck did not have dividers but did have a 1" lip. The only times anything fell from those shelves was from hard braking when things slid forward, piled up at the front of the shelves and spilled over. With the dividers between individual tools I don't think that would happen now. Have you needed to do a panic stop when pulling a trailer and if so, what happened in the trailer?

I think its probably just a lack of understanding of the tandem trailer axle. The 2 axles work in tandem to offset roll and major bumps. A tandem axle trailer has a COMPLETELY different ride from a single axle. I have had tools fall before but only under really bad road conditions here in NYS. Under conventional driving a tandem axle trailer is incredibly stable even under bumpy conditions and even tools on flat shelves will things stay put.
@rickymcgrath2314

Ron, you should mount your go-pro in the trailer next time you drive and overlay it with your other camera filming you driving. Turn on a couple Festool lights to illuminate the interior of the trailer. That will hush the doubters. And if you REALLY want to hush the haters, hang a tennis ball on a string inside the trailer so they can in fact see that the trailer is moving as you drive.

Ron, I really don't understand some people and their thought processes. I worked for UPS for 36n years in different capacities, including delivering from a package car. All we ever used was passive control, for keeping everything on the shelves. The only time the load did not stay was when the driver hit a bump too hard or some other type of erratic driving. Love your concepts and very well built. Thanks for sharing with all of us.

Great video to clarify. I also googled that island, sweet location. I would love to send a few pics of my van and get your gut reaction for passive restraints or general layout for some of my tools. Ford Transit 250 medium roof with a snoeks double cab conversion. I've been inspired by the lean grab and go process you use. I like to limit trips to the van by maybe having a few extra things but not spending too long selecting each tool from the van. I can grab, load and wheel 2 stacks of L-Boxxes and Systainers to a job. Grab a few saws and be working quickly. If you would be willing to give your quick opinion, I'll send or post a few pics, whichever you prefer. Thanks Gavin finish carpenter. (finished if I don't have another coffee)

That my friend is wood ART! I could NOT possibly match you innovative assembly, although I'm trying. Due to space and work schedule I'm gonna have to pre-assemble all my components and then do a three day weekend install. It just adds to the planning which I'm sure your up on. The only thing I'm going to add, and I'm almost embarrassed to suggest any addition to your work, is a Fire extinguisher accessible at the gate side of the trailer. In a easily grabbable location, tucked to the side, it can be available for both the job and trailer. I've never had the need, but...better there than not,.. if needed. Dam that's a sweet setup!

The one type of tool that really worries me when transporting is set out tools eg lasers, dumpy levels etc. These tools don't like jolting. I'd much rather have them in a vehicle near me. The downside of this trailer is a hiab could pick it up and put it on a truck even if it couldn't toe it away, then by by tools. The setup is awesome though for jobs with the room. 1 question are there pull out canopies all round for bad weather or sun?

You've absolutely got to be not serious! Anyone who is breaking axles is driving a trailer overloaded as well as has No understanding of driving a truck and trailer. Mistakes can happen, but the ignorance to not understand why it happens is unbelievable and inexcusable. Furthermore, it should be clear to anyone with mechanical aptitude to figure out why a tool falls out of place or tools are going remain in place during transit. Anyone should be able to review Ron's videos and determine why his tools have a high probability of staying put. This is video should have never have had to be produced.

Campbells Construction just make sure your guys are aware that they must lift the drawer to close it also. Especially if it's a heavy drawer. If they don't do so the screw will damage the plywood cabinet sides/drawer track and blow out the front over time. I've considered installing a small angel piece of aluminum on mine if they wear out.

Great trailer Ron. If guys are breaking trailers and tools and AXLES (holy crap!), they need to find a different job. I always stressed to my employees that all the equipment was provided and paid for by me and if they wanted to abuse any of it, they could bring their own tools to beat up. Man up bosses! I don't search for opportunities to create problems. The only employees that drive are our lead carpenters and they are the ones with keys to the trailers. At days end they are responsible and accountable. We have never had an accident and missing tools can be counted on one hand. It is up to ownership/management to set policy and run the company in a way that works for the long-term health of the company. I am speaking in past tense as we currently on have one truck, one trailer, and one driver: me;0)
