Can you refer the law where it says you must wear a helmet while dirt biking on public land in California?

I’ll always wear one. I flipped a can-am and my head hit the ROPS hard enough to crack and dent the helmet, BAD. If I wasn’t wearing one, I would be dead. While I understand personal choice and freedom, and respect peoples decision not to wear one, that doesn’t mean I understand their decision.

I find the RZR pro intriguing because if I was sightseeing in Borrego Springs not having to wear a helmet would be great on a slower speed trail. I would always wear one in Pismo or places like that. Any thoughts on slow speed trail rides.

I wont wear a helmet in my pro r ever i understand when jumping in a utv they call it riding not driving i understand that part but ive worn helmets in shifterkarts, riding / racing superbikes, dirtbikes and riding trials but i dont feel you need a helmet in a utv unless your racing. You wear a helmet when you race cars but dont when your on the freeway. So does this mean i can go to glamis in my pro r and not wear a helmet like everyone else!? Cant wait 😂 btw irish road racing / isle of man tt and motogp is the most dangerous sports in the world fyi.

I agree with almost all of what you said. I do not think the PRO cage needs to be replaced. Polaris tested it at a 90 mph rollover. Can’t tell me aftermarket cages are tested at all. I reached out to shock therapy who stated the stock cage did not need to be replaced. To each their own. I think most people change the cage for looks.

I would like to know more about this test Polaris did by rolling a Pro R at 90mph. Can you tell me where you saw or found this information? The Pro R only was certified as ROPS tested. Which in all honesty is way under satisfactory. ROPS is a standard industrial & Ag equipment has to pass. The “UTV” industry chose to adopt and use that as their base test requirements. If you can please share where you heard, saw or were told the Pro R was roll over tested at 90mph, I and many more would like to see it and understand the variables they used for that test.

@@toddcunningham2410 i know all cage ratings are based on speed not level. I do local races and my rzr cage was custom built by baja offroad, they do trophy trucks. My cage is the same thickness and can withstand a rollover easily over 100mph. I know a rzr cant hit that speed but i know at 70 im hella good. Cage is stupid heavy had to adjust suspension cause of it. I also know that since pro armor was bought out by polaris that there cages are the only after market cage that get crash tested for liability purposes, at least that what the pro armor rep told me, when i bought mine for my knew pro r. My other cage is on my turbo s

The UTV manufactures chassis & cages are not built and certified based on top speed the vehicle can go. They never have or will do that. They would never pass. They all use ROPS specs as the guide they use to build cages. The only stock cage with proper triangulation, gusseting proper wall thickness is the new Speed UTV cage.Yes Polaris claims the new Pro R cage is thicker wall tubing, I think it’s maybe .083 or less. Your Pro Armor cage is or was built of .095 DOM tubing. I know they used to have another roll over certification, but since Polaris bought them, I have no idea if they are still doing the extra certification, and what wall tubing they are using now? They don’t say or show it on the website anymore. They used to, which makes me think they might not be anymore? They don’t even tell you the tube thickness anymore. The Pro Armor cage might be race legal in some smaller local series, but it would not pass Score or BITD as there is no diagonal bars.

@@toddcunningham2410 well all i know is in SoCal when they build a cage, they always talk about rollover speed and what the cage can with stand. I know my cage is thick as hell.

Not sure I'll ever go to Glamis with that law. I don't want to wear a helmet, I feel it's restricing my vision and don't want the weight on my neck in the chance I am in a rollover. How much is the fine? I might just pay that instead

safety first! with that said, is a helmet really safe without a Hans type device? I'm torn with this deep thinking, sure any measure of safety helps but a helmet on your head whipping around in a crash will do more damage than without due to the weight of the helmet. Sure if you have a poorly designed cage that the B pillar is close to your head or a rock enters the cabin you are going to get hurt. But that rock or part of the car can hit other parts of your body than your head too.

Interesting point Mega, similarly, there are a lot of people that would also say a race seat is much safer than a suspension seat. I think you have a point regarding kids, maybe women, but I don't know the data that exists in 4 wheeled vehicles (for helmets doing more harm than good). I know in the 2 wheel world they do much more to protect than harm, your point kinda reminds me of the big MX debate of neck braces, which a few top riders still wear, but most riders have stopped. There's been a good amount of MX helmet technology in the last 10-12 years, 6D helmets has upped the game for moto, and they won a grant with the NFL for helmet protection design. Also, in Europe, the ECE standards are different than DOT, the ECE ends up creating lightweight helmets (like Airoh) and from what I'm told their version of safety is that the helmet should crush in an impact to do its job best, with the advantages of less weight, versus DOT's regulations as it leads to helmet design. 6D really brought to rotational impacts, and most moto and bike helmets feature MIPS, which tries to offer a similar design to offer some rotation for protection of real world crashes, not to mention magnetic visors or shells with sharp edges that wont catch on the dirt and cause neck trauma. Different considerations than a 4 wheel vehicle with a roll cage, but some food for thought.
