Everything you need to know about renting a motorcycle in Vietnam.
在越南有趣的城市探索方式--摩托车
IMPORTANT!
Unfortunately I forgot to mention repairs in the video. If anything happens to your bike repairs are extremely cheap. Maybe 5 dollars will fix any problem you could run into, so don't even worry about it. The damage I did to my bike (as I mention in the video) only cost me 2 dollars to have fixed.
I just returned from the always fun and adventurous country of Vietnam. I want to share with you some advice on how the whole experience of renting motorcycles in Vietnam goes down. It can be an intimidating thing if you have never done it before.

This is the single most informative, straight-up video on this subject I've seen yet - and I've watched quite a few! Thanks for dispelling a bunch of myths that I've been scratching my head about!

How you laid your bike over was the most classic moment of our trip. I made it up the hill with no problem!

Thanks for the video, very informative and honest. It just refreshed my memories riding a bike in vietnam, that was a beautiful experience. BTW just like you said, I had no problem to leave my passport as a deposit, and I must say that I didn't get pull over by Vietnamese cops at all... but in Cambodia? OH yeah!! (actually kinda my mistake though not having helmet on)

Having lived in Vietnam for a few years, I didn't and would never leave my passport with a motorcycle rental place. I would advise against it.

I know almost all places will rent you a bike, but it's actually quite dangerous to ride unlicensed in Vietnam. Reason is, even though the police don't pull you over usually, or most of the time a bribe of 500K VND solves it, if you get into an accident you're usually screwed. Your travel insurance won't pay your medical bills due to being unlicensed and thus breaking the law, and even if the other person you hit is at fault the police automatically pin you, the unlicensed foreigner, with all the blame for any accident you get into. I've heard of foreigners held in Vietnam until they basically coughed extortion money of $7-10K for an accident. So yeah, while riding unlicensed there is something you CAN do, imo it's something you SHOULDN'T do.

Hmm that's a good point. It wouldn't surprise me if the situation you described is actually happening. I wonder how prevalent it is. Seems reasonable to assume it is, but at the same time I feel like youd have to do something to someone's car or personal property to get into that situation. Most the danger of wrecking is because of other bikes or obstacles like animals or people. Vietnamese seem to not give a crap when a bike gets hit lol

@@globalvagrant1392 There was a pretty notable case of a foreigner last year when I was there, riding with no license/insurance/etc who hit a guy or the guy hit him (he doesn't know, he blacked out and was in the hospital.) He ended up in the hospital, and basically had to cough up 7-10K to leave Vietnam as compensation for the man's family. In Vietnam almost all vehicle accidents are resolved with an out of court settlement with the police mediating, and most accidents like that for a local are $1500 or so (still a lot for them) but because he was a foreigner with no license the police initially demanded $30-40K and they finally dropped it to $7-10K. It's already dangerous enough riding there, I think going with no license makes it exponentially more dangerous as far as legal consequences. Lots of foreigners have no riding experience and copy bad local habits and end up dying, too. Good news is, if you have a US motorcycle license, you can legally in Hanoi or Saigon just get a legal Vietnamese license from your translated US license for something like $20. There's also guys who run classes for foreigners that charge $100-200 to get it, too. But if you have the US license, it's ideal, then you're 100% covered in emergencies.

So have you spent a lot of time in vietnam? I just ask because you seem to know a lot about it! Lol being safe and legal are definitely the way to go.

@@globalvagrant1392 I spent two weeks in 2016, and 3 months from 2018-2019. I also did ride a motorbike in 2019 around the block for 20 minutes or so just to get a feel for it, but overall at least inside cities I actually found a bicycle pretty convenient, since it seemed most cities were fairly flat.

True. Some insurance companies will not pay even if its not your fault in an accident, and other only pay 50%. Do not listen to this information. NEVER hand over your passport!

So you can rent a 125 or 150 without the licence and without problem for the trip with the police right ? might pay few buck to the police and that's it ?

Sorry to tell you mate. Driving license in Vietnam is required for motorcycle over 50cc. I'm an expat in Vietnam and I have VN driving license for car and motobike. Yes it's true that when you rent a motorcycle nobody asking about driving license, but if police pull you over he would like to see your driving license, and also without driving license your insurance is not covered

If you live here, get an A2 license. Don't buy some cast off backpackers scooter because in the longer run the maintenance and unreliability will be worse than having no scooter at all. You can buy a new Honda blade (semi auto transmission) for just over a grand. The hottest moms drive an Air Blade like my fiancée. ✌🏻 Brown cops are traffic cops. Their motorcycle is faster than your scooter. Keep some tip money in your front pocket and your wallet hidden away. My fiancée's ex is a traffic cop (the tan uniform). Do as you wish but not stopping for a cop is not an intelligent move in a socialist country.
