You don't need a PS5 Pro | Have live service games reached their nadir with Suicide Squad?

Welcome back to the Shiitake Show, where we present our shiitakes for your enjoyment or otherwise. This week, with the imminent destruction of Xbox (according to some circles), we're wondering who the hell needs a PS5 Pro, as it's still rumoured to be coming out this year - despite the fact that Sony considers the base PS5 to be entering its final phase of life (already? Seriously?)
We also discuss the endless streaming wars in the wake of Pokemon TV disappearing, and how this affects our favourite franchises such as Star Trek and Marvel, and then wonder when live-service games are going to hit their rock bottom. I mean, surely Suicide Squad represents some sort of breaking point for that Sort Of Thing, right? With shorter, snappier, not-online games now advertising themselves as Bloat Free as if it's a virtue (as opposed to the norm), the end must be nigh for GAAS.

Regarding Pokémon anime, I saw recently that Horizons (not the cars or the robot dinosaurs) is going to be on BBC. So maybe some of that infographic will equate to iPlayer for us?

I was talking to my brother the other day and he just flat out said "I'm skipping this generation of consoles!" (sans Nintendo's new yoke I imagine) and I can't really fault that. As for Pokémon in UK and Ireland I imagine they might go the youtube route, they already have a significant presence there as is, but aye your best hope is hoping on the deck of a galley and raising the jolly roger. 😔

Helldivers 2 (GAAS) is popping off right now. If you think Live Service is at its peak right now the next few years are going to be rough.

Helldivers 2 isn't really a live service. It's just co-op.

@@mytimetravellingdog No, it's the first of PlayStations "12 Live Service games" and is scheduled to recieve regular content updates. Co-OP games like Destiny and Deep Rock Galactic are Live Service.

Is there anything worth playing on current gen that's exclusive to them and also warrants the price of the machines? I've brought both and used both for maybe 50 hours each, gave them both away as gifts. Edit: Jim is correct, the first Arkham game was the best, **** that ****ing car section.

I certainly love stuff like the Demon's Souls Remake, Spider-Man 2, Astro's Playroom, and Rift Apart. Not many, but I think that's ok with the rest of the catalogue available (despite not being exclusive to this gen). I agree it'd be mad to go for a PS5 Pro/PS6 at this stage in the game though, it feels like we're only just getting started.

Great discussion as per usual. One thing I hope they do with a PS5 Pro is make it much less ugly. I’ve got a standard PS5 in my house and I absolutely detest its appearance.

The problem is the generation may not have started properly due to world events but in the meantime the hardware has aged. The latest PC hardware is leaps and bounds better than the old 3700 underclocked Ryzen CPU in the PS5 with its GPU equivalent to one 2 and a half (super) generations old, that games are already struggling on these base machines. 30fps is no longer an acceptable frame rate when most people have TV's that are 4k 120hz capable. Also, 30fps doesn't divide well into 120 last time I checked so they feel horrible to play. Also, if you have variable refresh it doesn't work below 48fps on PS5 so there's no help there. I think this gen is in more of a need for a pro than last, a bump in CPU performance would also help with upscalers like FSR as they rely on CPU compute and turning them on can actually make you CPU bound in some games. Anyone interested in a PS5 Pro should consider selling their original PS5 to someone, making the PS5 Pro 70 - 80% "cheaper." The price of new hardware doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing thing. Hardware can be an investment that you can use to reduce the funds needed for your next hardware purchase, etc. PC enthusiasts have been following this model for decades.
