Why are you so angry?
@lonerjuan
@lonerjuan 9 ай бұрын
That's kind of a complex thing to answer in a KZbin comment, but basically it has to do with how I've never been able to live up to my own standards, which I can actually trace back to how easy school and pretty much everything else was to me growing up, resulting in impossibly high expectations from everyone around me and eventually, from myself, which in turn caused me to develop some pretty self-destructive habits of excess and depressive/maniac behavioral traits. Think 'Malcolm In The Middle' season 25. That said, I was not angry during that string change. I was just being the usual silly goose me, having fun, trying to get it done in less than 60 seconds. Thanks for asking though! It was an interesting exercise trying to synthesize years of therapy in a single paragraph.

The benefit of locking tuners is not only that it makes string changes faster, they also (and most importantly) increase tuning stability because you don't need to wind the strings a bunch of times around the posts. It's especially noticeable on the non-wound high strings.

"Doesn't go out of pitch anymore" lol your tune drifts because of the strings stretching, not it slipping on the tuner. Locking tuners reduce the length of the string reducing the amount of material that can stretch. That's what makes Locking tuners more stable. The less winding the better.

That's not true. The string around the post can't stretch. After about 3/4 of one wrap.. The rest never moves.. Tuning stability is not from stretching around the post.. Unless you really fuck up with the wraps..
@endocry
@endocry 2 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. There are multiple reasons for a guitar going out of tune, string stretching is not one, otherwise my Martins would go out of tune like a cheaper guitar, and they don’t.
@Reffitt2
@Reffitt2 2 жыл бұрын
All guitar strings stretch, no matter the amount of wraps. After I tune my guitars I take them up a half step and let them sit overnight. Once the string has stretched at a higher pitch it should never stretch when tuned. Quality strings shouldn't stretch much anyway. If you have to change a string during a set, change the string then gently pull the string a few times and tune to pitch. Most cheap tuning heads slip or have too much play in the gear, it's not the string stretching after 24 hours. If you can't keep a guitar in tune there's many reasons that could possibly cause the issue. Bad intonation can make chords sound out but it's not the string it's the nut and/or saddle. With acoustics too much moisture or not enough can affect this as well.

Here's a random tip for what it's worth, when you coil the string around the post several time you pretty much create parts of guitar string that aren't stretched out all around the post and when your doing bends and strumming, pretty much anything that alters the tension on the string you give opportunity for those loops to loosen in different places and throw your tuning off, as a general rule you want to loop the string as few times as possible around three times for the higher strings, the thicker strings don't require as many loops (2 is a good number for the thicker strings) and that will absolutely help you fight the holy fight against an out of tune guitar. 🎸

I know, but if you get used to the manual wind, then the time difference becomes negligible (this normally takes me less than 10 seconds), and you save hundreds (or thousands, if you have a lot of guitars).
@sweetbastianful

The main point for locking tuners is the amount of string between the winding and the first point of tension. With locking tuners, the distance is drastically reduce, so as strings get stretched out from playing, there isn’t much material for the string to stretch. Your way of winding is pretty useful for sure tho

My father wouldn't teach me a chord or scale on the guitar until I could tune it. It puts you in touch with your instrument. He wouldn't even let me use a tuning fork; believe me, it's a real help. Of course, when electric tuners came along I got one to help out with session work but I still tend to tune by feel and ear. I'm sure that there are videos on the Web that explain all this. The locking mechanism in a locking tuner doesn’t help for staying in tune tho. Although they’re mostly better quality, so if you upgraded the tuners on a guitar you struggled with staying in tune, it’s probably because they’re just better quality. I have a tele with locking tuners, and a Taylor without locking, and won’t bother what this guy does. Both guitars stays in tune for half an eternity 😂😎

if you have no loops of guitar string around the post you absolutely will achieve greater tuning stability. when you use your trem the loops around the posts loosen and tighten just a bit each time, which can, and often does, cause a pitch shift. locking tuners can eliminate that situation from the tuning stability equation.

Making them is one thing. An they feel normal once you get used to them, but it's not like that takes very long, least in my experience. An I'd say not really, we're talking minor differences depending on guitars, harmonics, overtones, and most importantly - you (the player).

No body NEEDS locking tuners if they learn some care when dealing with strings. However, locking tuners make it so much easier, so why not? BTW, on a guitar with no setup problems, having too many windings is often why string don't come back to tune when you bend or use the vibrato.

A self locking method I learned on youtube was >run string through hole >pull string back about 1 fret to give some slack >at the post; take the excess of the string twist it clockwise 1/2 turn around the post going UNDER the string >bend the end of the string over the main section of string and wind it tight with the machine Now the end of the string is being pinched against the tuning peg and locked in under the tension of the string. I've never had one slip on any of my guitars, it's super fast, and you can trim the string excess really small keeping everything super clean up top
