You don't need smart vinyl to cut without the mat Cricut Joy and Joy Xtra

This is so cool! When you use the large swing arm cutter, after you line the vinyl up, hold down the plastic piece on the base so it will hold the vinyl in place as you cut and that should take care of it and keep it from moving as you cut.

Whenever I have a large design to weed, I place cut lines in strategic places to avoid managing a large mess of vinyl. Going to use this tip for the baby announcement I'm working on. THANKS!

I cut some thick cardboard (or glued several layers together) and created an "extended" guide for the vinyl on my Joy. Will do the same now for my Joy Xtra. I hate it when the paper does not feed straight. Thanks for showing that we can use "regular" vinyl.

The key is to cut just inside the desired width th avoid the wrinkling. Once I figured that out, magical. Lol

can you do this with iron on vinyl as well? If so, when cutting do you use smart setting or regular iron on vinyl setting for the joy xtra?

Yes iron on works too. Depends on the iron on you are using you need to do test cuts to find the right setting

Can you have it cut normal cardstock this way too?

No. Off mat cutting needs to have some kind of backing to hold items in place. Cardstock wouldn’t work because the pieces would fall off and get damaged
