what’s even funnier is that the ai features AREN’T EVEN AVAILABLE YET. they have to put another software update in other to use the ai stuff (which right now it’s in beta phase). i honestly hate companies that spread their ai stuff to look like it’s the best thing ever but it’s actually a yes and no thing for me.

I own a 15 pro max and I have some reasons that are important to me for doing so. For context, my previous phone was the 13 pro. And to be frank, it was more than enough phone. I did not need any more “powerful” of a device. But there were a few things that were valuable enough to me to upgrade to the 15 pro max. 1. USB-C. Everything else I own is usb c, and I had been very impatiently waiting to get my phone on it too. I also wanted to bigger screen. You might think that I could have gotten the 15 plus instead but Apple in all their greed didn’t put a high refresh rate display on the non “pro” models. I will not go back to 60hz. I can tell the difference doing almost any mundane thing. Lastly, I really really like the titanium frame. My 13 pro was heavy. Despite being lighter than the 15 pro max, it felt heavier in the hand because of the density. The edges were also sharper and dug into your hand more. That’s all to say that the 15 pro max is pretty much my perfect phone minus apples absolutely ridiculous “Dynamic Island” garbage. It’s so much more camera than I need. I am not a photographer. In fact I barely take any photos. Assuming apple will let me periodically replace the battery, I have a hard time imagining apple releasing a device that I feel the desire to upgrade to. I think this phone will last me at least 3 generations provided I don’t destroy it along the way. Here is to hoping!

I currently have an iPhone 13 that is on its way to borking it, and am getting a 16 Pro in November. I like my hard to run mobile games and insane amount of photos. I'm getting to a point where the 13 is just not doing what I need it to, but I'm also one of the few people that likes playing really intensive mobile games, and it was run into the ground by being my main device in general for a while there.

AI is great at drawing animals with police sirens on the tops of their heads for my 2 years old little nephew. But that's the only thing I'm using it for. It's just a bandwagon that corporations are jumping on, claiming that it does everything, when in reality, it's amazing for a few things, acceptable for a wide array of things, but abysmal at even more things. It cannot replace human creativity and people are already rolling their eyes at the slew of AI-generated content that is seeping into social media.

this same mentality also applies to "real cameras" my daily driver is a panasonic LX-100 a compact camera from Sep 2014, 10 years ago! and it still takes great photos because I don't do high speed sports photography or astro photography or anything like that that really pushes the technical limits of the sensor or lens. I just take landscapes and urban photos, at human scales, that has honestly been a solved problem since the 60's. so my comparatively fancy camera with ultra high iso compared to film or my one finger optical zoom control so I never need to swap a lens out. it's all just quality of life features; most people that use a camera really could use old equipment and some good technique and still get amazing shots.

As a user of a iPhone SE for about 2 years, I can tell you my biggest gripes with it are 1. Screen to body ratio is absolutely awful by today's standards. The size of the phone as a whole is great, but the screen size isn't good. 2. Lightning. All of my other devices use USB-C, it sucks having to carry another cable just for one device. 3. It tends to get hot, like the cooling isn't nearly enough for the SoC. 4. Battery life isn't the best. The battery is a fine size, but the SoC is much less efficient that modern iPhones. 5. The speakers are really not as loud as they could be. However, there are some good things, like 1. It's still getting updates. 2. It's still reasonably fast. 3. Fingerprint reader. 4. It does have 5g. 5. It can do 4K30 (not 4K60 btw)

Have you ever used a professional camera? Those things are no joke. You have to control a ton of shit manually and it takes some fair technical knowledge to actually know what you need to set for the best photo. The UIs are also really unintuitive for the unaccustomed and they generally just take a lot of knowledge to operate. ...also what does adding a case have to do with this actually? He mentioned a case to make it easier to hold and stuff, it's still just a phone lol

Coming from both sides - Apple tends to give you some software for free, and their stuff is generally more polished. Samsung tends to have more features, though sometimes they're not as polished. I guess it's kinda like comparing an SUV to a truck though. They both can do the same thing, one has more utility that you may or may not use, the other has a more polished and secure experience.

I do find it funny that we still call these "phones" when a phone is the last thing people actually buy these for anymore. They're just pocket computers and cameras, the phone is an extra, bonus feature. And yeah, I know people have been saying this for ages, this isn't a fresh take by any means, but it never gets less accurate. Guarantee, ten years down, there's going to be some kid going to their mom and being like "why do we call these phones?"
