We owned a home within an HOA in south Florida for almost 10 years and it was a nightmare. We were harassed for what kind of trees we planted, what hours we had our truck in the driveway (it wasn’t a work truck, but a new Ford Ranger), and our kids were yelled at for playing in the community pool. And if you tried to speak up in a meeting, you were immediately shut down. It felt like living in a dictatorship. We also know someone who was foreclosed on due to a misunderstanding. We moved to another state and bought an older home that is not in an HOA and although we have had to do a lot of repairs, we live in peace now. We will never live in an HOA again!

I live a very Peaceful life with my wife and our hound dog, the Lord has blessed us with 70 acres in Fenntress county Tennessee. The HOA California situation sounds very aggravating and complicated. It’s a good thing you are a lawyer. We will be praying for you God bless

I owned a condo in California, where I still live. Unfortunately, HOA boards can be very power hungry. I use to hear about bad experiences with HOA’s before owning a condo and thought “oh that’s not the way all HOA’s are like”. Well…either they are all power hungry or I drew a bad card because it seemed like there wasn’t a day that went by where you didn’t see that Yellow-slip on a neighbor’s door. Enjoy your acreage. I hope to be a fellow multi-acreage owner soon too.

At our condo we got a violation for having 3 small potted plants, in one vertical plant stand. So a little 18" high stand, with 3 small 5 inch pots, in front of our door. CCRs say 2 potted plants is the max. And the owner is on the HOA board too! Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Not that I didn't already think that HOAs suck,....but,...Thank You for reminding me. I would rather take my chances that the guy next door doesn't paint his house purple. And I understand the need and reasoning behind HOAs.

Bought my first place that had an HOA. Didn't think much about it, except for the monthly assessments, which wasn't a big deal. Had I known what being a part of an HOA actually meant I would have never done it. What a disaster on almost every level. Never again.

I used to work for a property management company here in Atlanta until recently. We managed various HOAs in the suburbs… The owner of the company was a greedy, obnoxious, power hungry little troll. A lot of the HOAs are managed by companies that are just in it for the money. It’s not about “neighborhood aesthetics” it’s purely a power play to nickel and dime you to death. The company I worked for made the restrictions so stringent that I don’t see how the owners could even enjoy their properties. Again, all about making money ….after working there , I can tell you that I will never live in a neighborhood with an HOA

I would never deal with an HOA. They seem to be run by what would be the dream job for psychotic control freaks. I wouldn't last the week.

HOA here includes all landscaping, but the HOA never enforces the contract requirements. The landscaper knows this and does less as time goes on. HOA is $300+ per month.

I live in Southeastern NC, 4 years ago Wife & I bought a home in a HOA. It is in the more remote western part of the county. We went there because it was by far best value for our money, where we lived it is a giant housing bubble that is still going on, even the value on our house has increased over $100,000 in 4 years. I despise HOA & if I moved I will never go to another one. I'm the type who sees something needs fixing, I get it fixed. You have to ask permission to get anything fixed, & have to wait on the board to get around to approve it. I'm suppose to contact the board when work is done, I never get back to them. The dues are paid every May, & the money goes to Las Vegas, & of course the dues are voted on, it it always passes, but we never see the results. The one good thing I can say is I got 2&1/2 lots so I don't have any houses crammed beside me.

it's strange isn't it. how can something be your property if someone can levy a tax agaisnt it? If you own something for which you have to regularly pay in order to keep it then you do not own it you rent it. This is why the rich put everything they have into trusts thereby avoiding the title of property owner, if you own nothing on paper then nothing can be taxed. The fact is "Property" carries liabilty. You have the exclusive right to use your home or your car but you dont own it.

Yes. however, the owner of record whether a trust or not has to keep up paying taxes and HOA dues if in an association.

I was told we have an hoa but can’t get any docs, no board, no meetings, no budget and can’t get the current assoc prez to give a straight answer. Had roof damage and claim denied- ins saying they cover only inside (a lie, I pay this) and telling roof adj deduct 11k 😳🤪

Don't see why the owners in Chicago wouldn't actively keep up on hoa as owners regardless of the situation. Matt next time you talk about starting a business, I was wondering about a post I read about how a business loan could be called at the lenders choice, and being prepared for losing finance unexpectedly.

JB lives in an HOA. Dude doesn't walk the talk. When is he buying a ranch? I predict never. He likes California plus prices aren't coming down as he forecasts. He's predicted a housing crash for 5 years while prices have doubled and tripled.

Do we ever really "own" our home ? If you cant pay the prop. taxes the City will put a lien and take your home. Best is to pay off a home in an area where prop. taxes are low. Example. Texas and NJ. have high property taxes. I would never live in those States.

I bought a home with a very limited hoa. 20 homes with a self managed hoa. No third parties. $80 per month includes water, sewage, garbage and some modest landscaping in the sierra scaped common areas. No amenities. The hoa was $70 per month up to July for the previous 7 years. Anyone that messes this up has to try hard.
