The Duracell Project

The Duracell Project

Күн бұрын

This week we're finishing up the dream work bench build. It's a lot of cabinetry work and drawer building. Matt doesn't have a lot of experience building these kinds of things but we're pretty happy with how it's turned out.

The best method to stick those strips to the edges of the exposed foam is to dig out a 45 deg strip of foam along each face of the edge and then fill that with thickened epoxy as well as coating the foam between the two 45 deg troughs. Stick the strip to that and you will have corners that you can sand a decent radius on so that the edge is blunt. The 45 deg fillets form a one piece structure with the strip. Slightly heavier yes but the strips won't end up on the floor after a few months of use.

awesome work. maybe talk to a wooden boat builder, build the drawers with little hooks on the runners so they can not open until the front is lifted. i have been there building similar...think about using cedar its much nicer to work than epoxy very light and much quicker to build.

A huge thumbs up to her, we all love your Mom !

Like how you make so much of what you need - even fiberglass edge banding. Use a piece of tape for the router bearing to run over and it won’t leave marks on the material and will leave it proud just a hair to be sanded off flush.

I was a cabinet maker for 10 years and I can say that the way you built your boxes in place is perfectly valid and wonderful. CA glue can be brittle and you may decide to epoxy your edge banding instead. If you decide to epoxy your edge banding, you can make edge banding clamps out of cheap Harbor Freight spring clams, and old bicycle tubes. I made about 50 for our cabinet shop in a couple of hours. It makes edge banding easy and quick with slower setting adhesives that have better toughness. Just an idea. I love your cabinetry!

I think your cabinetry looks awesome. The edge strips are a great idea but I was surprised to see you using CA glue rather than Epoxy. My understanding is that CA is not strong long term if damp at all (though I'm no adhesives expert so may have got this wrong...). The Stand Stare Study technique for working stuff out has served me pretty well, it's not 100% reliable but always gets more interesting results, the angles in your workbench being a good example. Love your work.

The workbench on the boat is a great addition. I think Arabella's builders are including one, also. The sacrificial top is a good idea. Questions/suggestions: Do you plan to include one or more vises? Removable or fixed? Metal-working or wood, or both? Also, a swing-away seat (bar stool-type) in the knee hole might work well. Lastly, dust collection and removal. I've never seen a Shopvac temporarily attached to a Dorade box, but it might keep the dust out of the living spaces. I'm enjoying the posts. Many thanks.

Love the foam cored furniture, your boat will stay light. Have you considered low friction rings for nearly all your running rigging? It would maintain the lightness on deck too and eliminate a lot of installation work. We eliminated genoa tracks and allowed fore and aft adjustment to our genoa sheets from the cockpit with a downhaul system. The IMOCA round the world race highlights all sorts of low friction rigging (and the rope constrictors seem to be everywhere too).

hello from Belgium, I love your channel and follow your progress with great pleasure !!! A little feedback with the cyano (CA) glue. CA used on epoxy you just glue the two fiberglass parts together and they will not hold well over long time and scratch. if you use clear epoxy, the cure will be longer but your stip will be melted with the rest of the piece. and the fields of your panels will be much more resistant.

Carpenter/Joiner by trade here. Nice work! Future proof and moisture stable, what more could you want from boat cabinets! I think even if I were as good as you at fibreglass I would have made the drawer boxes out of wood saturated with epoxy. For me it would surely be cheaper and/or faster (?), but I suppose you are more likely to have scrap foam panels around than plywood so maybe not! I would caution against relying on CA glue for anything long term….especially when subject to handling and shock loads as boat drawers are. The edge banding was a great idea, but I predict you will re-glue it with epoxy one day in an exotic location. How will you keep those drawers shut when you are beating on the port tack? Ps if you do get your other cabinets built for you, go to a shipwright, or at least a cabinet shop that specialises in fitting out boats. Your every day cabinet ships are reliant on practices and materials that are not at all marine grade….they would be much cheaper I’m sure, but just for a while…
