I've trained my 5 cats and 2 feral with 3 different whistle sounds and 1 "human purring" like mommy cat calls their kittens to eat breast-feed. So we go for a walk in the fields, and I can call them when I turn the direction of the way, or just check where they are (when they are hiding in the brambles hunting for the rabbits). And I also have a specific whistle sound when I see a loose dog without its owner or that has escaped from a neighbor, so the cats immediately hide themselves in a bush or a high thing, and they don't move till I call them back. The same happens when I see a tractor coming to spray or strange people (normally men with very low voices, cats are very scared.) It is a great thing, because if I can't to spell, shout or I am hoarse, I always can whistle or use a ultrasonic whistle at nights and they come directly home. The other sound "like mommy cat calling" I use only with a great treat reward that they love, so, when I have to go all day long to work and its sunny out side, and the cats want to explore, I use this sound to call them with no refuse, no delay, and keep they safe indoors until I came back. Cats are awesome! They are super intelligent, its incredible all the ability they have to learn and to do what will need they do for keep them safe or just made a common language with they humans. Sorry, my English is a work in progress...

Cat journal: we've made some progress on human conditioning. we've made him release certain sounds when he wants to offer us a treat. Unfortunately, it does not always work. Sometimes the human just makes the sound randomly, probably finding it amusing. Well, humans are quite hard to train, but we'll still try to see how much he can learn.

I think I accidentally trained my cats during feeding time. When I took the tin opener and put it against the tin. It made a very distinctive grinding sound. A type of sound that in time even I eventually picked up on. At this point all my cats would come hurtling into the kitchen at supersonic speed. Plowing through laundry, bin bags and walls alike

My sister's dog only gets canned (tinned) food once a year at Christmas, and without fail, every day he hears the sound of a can hit a counter he comes running. The normally laid back pup will start to bark, lose his mind and lunge at the cat when the electric can opener is used. Just on the off chance that it is time for his Christmas meal again. Some animals are HIGHLY food motivated. If you have delicious food like steak, he automatically launches into his whole "trick repertoire" without prompting. Just starts a sit/shake/rollover.....in vain.

Not that I don't inherently trust you, Micah, but since we're poking holes... Given how long it took them to respond to the "proper" call, it's clear that their responses aren't immediate. Isn't it possible that they had already started moving in response to one of the prior calls, and you just didn't give them enough time before moving on, making it look like they responded to the last one you did? If you really want to disprove the haters, I think you'd be better off pointing the camera at the _cats_, not at you, so you could see their immediate reactions to the various noises. Not that I don't believe you. Just musing.
@neurotransmissions6 жыл бұрын
Poking holes is good! Yeah, I was disappointed at how long they took to respond. They've been really responsive to it (Bill literally runs when he hears it), so I'm not sure if they were just sleepy or not hungry or what. It's definitely possible they started moving earlier since we didn't see them in the other room, but I'm confident they specifically reacted to the sound. The idea to have the camera on them is a good one though. Maybe I'll try to post that on our newfangled community tab! 😄 Thanks Cory!

I also agree with this comment. Nevertheless, I believe cats to be easily trainable to a degree. My cat has also learned to come almost immediately and running(!) when I say it's name or say "come" or "look" in a certain way he recognizes. Most of the times.. It's important to never *call* them to reprimand them for anything. They will become afraid to come and will just stop. Cats being cats, there are times he just completely ignores me. He is sleeping somewhere soundly, or he is preoccupied with watching birds out the window etc and decides not to come at all.. 😎

Prior to watching your videos I knew about conditioning ect and taught my cat to sit in two days. Used a hand motion and said sit, would just stroke him and give him lots of love every time he did it. My family and friends thought I was crazy when I said I did it until I showed them. Now training him to give high fives but it's a longer process since he gets bored.
@mumrik34715 жыл бұрын
Hey, I trained my cat using this exact method too! 😃 So far he knows "sit", usually followed up by "wait" (same hand motion to hold his position) or "spin" (using a circular hand motion). The last one was tricky. It took him a while to complete a full circle. I always reward him with compliments and treats. My family is still a bit sceptical as to why you'd want to train a cat. I'd like to think that he's become more patient, especially during feeding time. He no longer jumps up on the counter, instead he sits in his spot (like a good boi😽) until I've placed the food dish on the floor. Does your cat know any more commands? 😊

You absolutely can train cats! All but two of my cats can give me their paw when I ask for it. I managed it through a process of presenting them a treat, taking their paw and saying "paw". Eventually I could stop taking their paw and they would lift their paw on their own when a treat is presented with the vocal cue "paw". And now, they'll do it without a treat and just the vocal cue "paw". The other two don't do it because they're so food oriented and they couldn't get past the first step; all they focused on was the treat in front of them. Would love to train them to jump into my arms but I think I can only get one of them to do such an active trick lol

Many years ago, I went to a circus in Russia. They had trained a bear to pull a bicycle upright, get on, and ride in figure 8s. (I suspect that they were not very kind in their training methods) Perhaps you can teach your cats to do that. Not a full size bicycle, of course. The bears also rode motorcycles, and if I remember right, one of them kick started the motorcycle before riding around. It kind of seemed like the trainers were playing with fire. I am pretty sure that was right before the Great Biker Bear Massacre of 98 in St. Petersberg. What a mess that was.

This is actually an example of operant, not classical, conditioning. Behavior in classical conditioning involves the action of smooth muscle and glands, whereas operant conditioning involves striated (e.g., skeletal) muscles. Also, in classical conditioning, stimuli (e.g., sound of bell initially paired with presentation of meat powder) precedes the response (i.e., salivation...glandular response); whereas in operant conditioning, discriminative stimuli (e.g., frog sound; or the sound of bell, perhaps at a certain pitch) precedes the behavior of interest (e.g., approaching you) and, in this case, reinforcing stimuli (a treat or petting) is delivered after the behavior. I know this probably reads like I am being picky, but these distinctions are important, especially for students of psychology, medicine, and related fields. I don't think most people appreciate the intricacies and complexities of behavioral processes, more of which are happening at cellular and molecular levels throughout the body (remember--it's a system of systems). The Dunning-Kruger effect is at full force on this topic. (P.S.: I love your channel and will support it on Patreon!)

The idea of cat training brings to mind a long running cat blog well worth looking at, The Way of Cats; they are also on various social media. And from experience with mine over the decades, cats need to have a 2-way relationship with you in place for your training of them to be successful but even with that they still have a powerful "what's in it for me?" factor.

I liked this video more than the previous one. 0) Hater is not the one who just tries to refute your experiment. 1) (big one)) You succesfully explained the basics of brain learning. It helps to human learning too. 2) Now, this makes me ask: What is training: Every asociation the brain makes before the "rational" behaviour? ("rational", I dont know how to call it in cats) If it can be so , you are right, but this way everything is training. Ok for me, I dont think dog trainers agree.

Tip (or experiment) for learning (brain training?) that came from artificial neural networks. NOT TESTED, but I am pretty sure about it. When you learn, say, digits 0 to 9, you have all the jobs: association, generalization, discrimination, all at the same time, most of the time contradicting themselves. The brain CAN do it, learn from caos. When teaching a foreign languaje (English) for first time, teachers do lists you have to recite like praying. Many years later many students still had problems discriminating he/she and the use of do/does. My tip is: Do strong one association each time. First, learn examples with "only man, only first person". Once well trained, practice only third person "he does" and make it strong. THEN and not before you mix exercises. Your brain will easily make a branch for this case and will not confuse both again. You may forget, but you will not have the persistent hesitation "Julie sayyyy...SSS".

It kind of irks me that the 'most liked' comments on these particular videos here seem to be jokes instead of intellectual discussion, or something to the tune of 'Wow! Thats so simple! Maybe I need to re-evaluate my human/cat interaction! XOXOXO OMG Yer so hot btw..." But I too have a cat named Loki who got his name specifically bc of his behavior, so I cant help but L-O-LARF at that one.

Are you taken.....all the men I know hate cats...I only have 5.....not to many...I keep my house clean which is hard work because my cat's run throughout the house get into things....when I'm gone they get into the dirty clothes and they will drag a t-shirt with my scent on it and lay on it till I return....isn't that a little stalk like lol....no that just means they love me...I have 3 part Savannah's and a Sokoke and a Bodega cat....the youngest is just 4 weeks old which the mother don't take care of him anymore so I had to finish it out....
