"Am I working hard enough at the thing I want to be great at?" One word... no. When you had to hit your partner/instructor with that reality check spoke to me as well. There was a guy in my class who was at the top and I remember asking him last week how did he excel so quickly. He told me he was up late, til 1am just putting in the work and practicing. Stepping up my game if I'm going to compete at a high level.

Ah a heavy metal themed video! Love it. Metallica is one of the hardest working bands out there, going on decades now, so much respect to James. Evan, in consideration of working a primary gig, I do feel I've been putting in the necessary and consistent work on my side-venture, but you have directly inspired me to try and commit even further. This past month I went from 1 piece of content per week up to 2 pieces per week, written and video combined. 1 to 2 per week may seem like a minimal increase, but it is a significant shift in output for me. Thanks for always challenging your community.

"No one gets anywhere without hard work". Really a great video. I'm currently working hard on my art. I spend 3 hrs/day on it, because I have to deal with school, but after watching this video, I'll increase my daily practice to 4 hours. I also think that consistency is very important. Never give up. One of the things that I have noticed is that “Mother Nature” rarely loses. We live in a very advanced technological world but the ferocity of a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, tsunami, blizzard, flood, or volcanic eruption still tends to render us somewhat powerless. Mother Nature’s spouse, “Father Time”, also always wins. Who among us hasn’t wished that they could go into the time machine with the knowledge, experience, and wisdom that they now possess and relive some past events when they had a more active physical capability than they do now? Nature is not just a villain. She is also a heroine. When a forest is carelessly destroyed, doesn’t nature find a way to rebuild and replenish? Isn’t it neat when the leaf of a plant is blocked from its source of sunlight and a branch evolves adjusting the position so that the leaf has direct sunlight exposure? We can’t control nature but we must try and PAY ATTENTION to it. When we know that the hurricane is approaching we move to safer ground, buy batteries and supplies, and prepare to hunker down for safety. When there is a tornado warning, we move to the safest room away from the windows. Extreme scenarios effectively motivate us to pay attention. What I want our focus to be now is when nature is a bit more subtle. I submit to you that nature gives us clues how to be successful but we fail to PAY ATTENTION. As toddlers, we copy and learn from our parents just as the animal kingdom does. Nature at work. PAY ATTENTION. The best thing about being human vs. being an animal is our ability to think. To visualize solutions. To change our environment for the better. To reason. Most importantly, to resolve, to commit, and to not be denied. To will. The greatest gift that our Creator has given us is the ability to CREATE. PAY ATTENTION. Similarly, our greatest gift can also become our biggest deterrent. Oh, we create all right. Unfortunately, we create negatively. We are especially good at creating road blocks for ourselves. Barriers. Limitations. When this happens, we stop trying. Nature never stops trying. PAY ATTENTION. Anyone, with even a small modicum of common sense, has got to reason that if you want to become part of the minority that are successful, that you should COPY what they are doing. We copy our parents when we are young. In fact, this is how we survive. Where and how did we meander off track? The ironic truth is that we love to copy others. Have you ever listened to a group of teenagers talk to each other? Or businessmen or businesswomen “interfacing”? The worlds of fashion, music, entertainment, sports, and politics, just to name a few, are cluttered with copycats. Feelings of conformity seem to be vitally important. One of my co-workers justified a policy at work with the following words of wisdom: “It’s always been done that way.” I’m not opposed to tradition. I am opposed to mindless tradition. I asked my co-worker if he thought we should still have slavery, and should women have the right to vote, and should we only have land lines and the U.S. Postal Service. I loved getting the “Jackie Gleason” response he gave me: Huminna, Huminna,Huminna… In addition to the uncomfortable feeling of being a non-conformist, there is also the fear of embarrassment. What if I try something and it doesn’t work? If you make only one attempt at a worthy objective, you are not committed. Your fear of embarrassment is stronger than your level of commitment. Successful people don’t get embarrassed, they get more determined! To succeed you must continuously fine tune, assess, make a new plan with a new starting line, and take more action. As Zig Zigler famously said: “Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly until you can learn to do it well.” Too often, people feel embarrassed because something wasn’t wildly successful on their first effort. Failure is an event, not a person. Remember, if failure is not an option, success isn’t either. The fear of embarrassment often leads to this type of thinking: Nothing ventured, nothing lost. When you play not to lose you usually lose anyway. And, most importantly, you never move forward if you don’t try to move forward. You won’t get embarrassed by not trying. What you do get is a plaid jacket that they give to members of the Mediocrity Hall of Fame. Trust me, you won’t look good in plaid. In today’s world of multi-distracting ourselves by unsuccessfully attempting to multi-task, the prevailing attitude is: If at first you don’t succeed, you probably don’t have the ability. If Rome wasn’t built in a day, then you probably don’t have the ability. So why try? Commitment, my friend. Focus, my son. Clarity, young man. Singleness of purpose. Let’s talk about ability. There are two meanings to ability: a fixed ability is one that constantly needs to be proven and a changeable ability is one that can be developed through learning. In one world, success is about proving you’re smart or talented; In the other world, it is about stretching yourself to learn something new. Developing yourself. Don’t you tire of people that continuously give you their resumes “proving” that they are smart and have ability but then they never perform? Why don’t people copy the minority that is successful (as nature intended)? We have talked about feelings of non-conformity, the fear of embarrassment (fear of failure) and the difference between fixed ability and changeable ability. There is one more factor to consider in the equation. We, as a society, value natural, effortless accomplishment over achievement through effort. There is no such thing as effortless achievement. Guess why Steph Curry is such a good shooter? Or why Tony Robbins is such a good speaker? They appear to be performing effortlessly. They continually stretch themselves, behind the scenes, with new ideas, techniques, and by reviewing their imperfect performances to make themselves seem more natural. The devil is in the details. Of course, that’s where excellence hides as well. Studying the masters is the key to success in everything. Here is my major point. It is natural to find a successful person, the 2%er, and copy what they do to be an outstanding achiever. I say this because nature has offspring copy their more successful parents at birth and in childhood to survive and thrive. When you are pursuing “unchartered” territory, copy the formula of those that pursued “unchartered” territory before you. Plan, do, review, be committed and expect temporary failure. It is part of the process. It is a law of nature. Do not let failure deter you from your committed outcome but rather use it as inspiration to continue. Don’t feel that you always must follow the crowd. A man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back to the crowd. Do not become embarrassed when you are not perfect in your performance. Copy the 2%ers that realize success is the constant correction of a series of failures. Do not ever feel that your education is complete. Continually stretch yourself to develop new skills. Remember to drill, practice, rehearse, and review to make your movements seem natural and smooth to others. Then do it again! It is necessary to tell you some of the “why’s and because’s” people are unable to become successful. We are human and subject not only to the frailties of our species but also the shortcomings of the society that we live in and its influences. My goal is to inoculate you from copying mediocrity by exposing the virus so that you may recognize it when you see it. And, as always, to Educate, Lead, and Inspire. PAY ATTENTION TO SUCCESS AND COPY IT.

Sorry james, you're my idol, but I must correct you: You never get out of a system anything more or even equal to what you put in, you get out less. That's why you need to work so damn hard, to have anything in the end. The physical law of the universe is that any process will consume some energy and not be able to output the same amount that was put in. Entropy.
@alexandrefalardeau678
@alexandrefalardeau678 7 жыл бұрын
x1134x You seem like a smart guy, so I would like to know of what law you speak of? A physical law that says that we don't get out as much as we put in? I have never heard of such law. Also, the point of the video is to make people realise that you dont get something from doing nothing. Thats it. Simple point. Theres no need to "correct" anybody by stating a law of the universe..
@alexandrefalardeau678
@alexandrefalardeau678 7 жыл бұрын
x1134x also, entropy is a quantitive measure of disorder in a system. Your definition is wrong.
@x1134x
@x1134x 7 жыл бұрын
For me to be wrong, you need to show that you DO get out of a system what you put into it. You'll never succeed in that, because I'm right. Parsing details or technical definitions, is just purposefully trying not to understand what is being conveyed. I didn't define Entropy. I put it as a one word sentence. Its the thing Hetfield didn't account for. I did get the point of the video, that's why I wrote: "That's why you need to work so damn hard, to have anything in the end"
@alexandrefalardeau678
@alexandrefalardeau678 7 жыл бұрын
x1134x Bullshit! If you want to about it that way, show me an instance where putting in more hard work would yield less results...Impossible, because it isn't quantifiable. And me telling you that your definition is in no way, shape, or form me not trying to understand...Its exactly the opposite. I simply asked you to give the specific law youre implying, yet you cant, because there isnt one.
@x1134x
@x1134x 7 жыл бұрын
Um, no. I didn't say "the more work, the less results". I said "the amount out of a system is always less than what is put into the system" That is built into the universe. You'll never get out of anything more than was put into it. Period. Show an example of where more work came out of a system than was put into it. Its impossible. Show an example of where the same amount of work came out of a system than was put into it. Still impossible. The amount of work out of a system will always be less than the work put into it. Therefore if you want lots of results, you need to put in even MORE work, that's why work is so effective at producing results. Just dont' be confused into thinking you'll get out of something what you put into it, you'll get less. Always. I'll again reiterate that I STILL didn't give you any definition. Because of entropy, the work/energy put into a system will disperse into causing disorder, rather than contributing to the goal of the system or machine. Some will end up at the output, but the usefulness of some will always be lost within the system, due to entropy. Saying "you get out what you put in" is inaccurate and not the same as saying "the more you put in, the more you'll get out", which is accurate.
