When we started our place, some friends gave us a wood stove for the cabin build we started. We set it up as a temporary solution, twenty years later its still our primary heat source keeping us warm and toasty right now. The good thing about this type is you only need kindling and split wood to get the fire going, after that you just burn whole rounds. This will mean nothing if you have never split firewood but believe me, that one habit you want to avoid. In the dead of winter, you can get by with loading it twice a day. The unit has a mechanical damper so the heat output is easy to control and self damping. They no longer make them but they all over this part of the country and often on Craigs list. They are called Earth Stove and I believe they were produced in Polson Mt. Highly recommended if you happen to stumble across one. Today is also a very good day for us, we return to our sailboat in less than 100 days. Zion and Canyonlands next month to breakup the cabin fever.

I find it incredible, INCREDIBLE I TELL YOU, that in a state that is mostly wilderness you can't find a wood stove in stock.

Awww! Sorry the Mickey Mouse shaped wood stove didn't work out! It was hilarious looking! 😂 Brenda, you do a pretty terrific impression of a hard working farm girl in spite of being a boat lounging city girl! LOL!! 😄 You two make a great team! Keep up the good work! 👍🏼 progress is still progress! 🏡

Add sand to the bottom, so you can dispatch the portage stand, designed for travel. The sand will contour, protect thin metal, and add stability. You may need to build a fence thing or something for the bottom draft. Also you will have to clean it out more often though at least you will have nice flat surface. Also you could contour some brick if you have 3" masonry cuter wheel for the hand grinder. Then for over night install a dampener on the stack. The last best place for good inexpensive stove could also be craigslist. Wow

Glad you are getting rid of that stove. Go on Facebook and ask your neighbours for a proper one. There are lots around often for peanuts. Don't reuse stove pipe. It just isn't worth it. Get a CO detector for that shack if you are going to be in it AT ALL. Put down some sort of hearth under whatever stove you have. A sheet of cement board will do. Sooner or later you WILL have something burning under that stove. You didn't show the chimney through wall fitment. Buy a proper one. Seriously. Also, two 90 bends in your chimney means you have to go up one size outside the wall for proper draft. I admire your work ethic, but just buy a couple face cords of good stove wood that has been seasoned for two years and use that while you try and work up your own. Get some proper PPE for cutting with that chainsaw, Chaps, gloves, Helmet and hearing protection at least. USE IT. I've seen the scars from when someone made a split second error and survived it. No hearing protection means you will be saying "what" and have ringing in your ears for the rest of your life. No BS.

Burn a fire around it outside. Stack wood around it like a bon fire and believe me, the paint and smell will be gone!

Spray a little diesel on it when you have in a pit fire all the paint should be gone.

Seems the only problem with that thing was the inappropriate paint. Bob's suggestion is a good one, or take a tiger torch to it and burn all the paint off (outside of course).

We had actually thought about doing just that. But alas, there were too many other problems with it that were beyond our motivation level. It has gone back to the manufacturer and we purchased a different one,

I have a good bit of experience with that stove, although yours looks to be the 2.0 model, I used it to heat a Tee Pee tent. I will recommend the following mods to increase efficiency and your satisfaction with it: Turn the stovepipe around the way it is supposed to be (the pipe above goes into the one below) so when you try to slow it down to get longer burns the creosote doesn't drip out to the outside of the pipe stinking up the place and making a mess, that can be unbearable. If it has the expanded metal mesh tack welded in the cap as a spark arrester, remove it, it will quickly clog the pipe, if you are worried about sparks there is a plan B I can tell you about. Make a baffle to fit into the top of the stove about 3" down from the top and about 2/5ths from the back to the front, I just bent up a few layers of heavy sheet metal I had for this adding a couple layers to the front edge where the fire comes around, this is a biggy as far as efficiency goes, the fire will have to go toward the front, over the baffle, and along the top to get to the pipe and up and out, this does two things, you will get more heat into the room before it goes up the pipe and the top will be much hotter for cooking (once you get to know the stove you will definitely notice this!) Once in a while I would hear the slight roaring of a secondary burn happening just at the baffle. This is one of the top mods I did to this stove. There is a trick to installing a baffle, I can help with that also, basically, you make it in two parts overlapping in the middle so you can get it into the stove, then bolt or rivet the two parts to the stove sides then drill and bolt or rivet the two parts together in the middle. I can give you more details and photos in an email if you like. Operating the stove for longer, even close to overnight burns (I could get 6 hours easily) can be accomplished by doing a few things, Get rid of the grate and build your fire on a bed of ashes an inch or 2 thick, you will have better luck building up and keeping a bed of coals. Don't worry, every day or 2 or 3 depending on how much and the kind of wood you are burning you can shovel the coals to one side and remove the excess ash. Save some chunkier pieces of wood to stoke it for the night. You want to seal off the airflow as much as possible to get a slow burn to maintain your coals. one thing I found that helps is to seal the door with a gasket made from several layers of aluminum foil folded so it is a little bigger than the door (crinkle the sheets before folding them together to give it more bulk) and close the door with it between the door and the opening, this actually makes a pretty good seal, if you need more air intake to keep the coals burning, push a pencil through the foil gasket where your vent holes are, this gasket will last a week or so, you might experiment gluing a gasket to the door. That should be a good start for you, don't be discouraged by some on the net, with a little work you can make this a pretty good little stove. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! That was super helpful. We actually tried some of the modifications you suggested, but unfortunately still couldn't conquer the smoke problem coming out of the door. Brenda was firm is wanting something different so we sent it back and bought something different. But thanks again for the tips!

Jeff and Brenda Thanks for sharing your adventure! I'm going to Razz you a little :-) It might be cold, wet, and miserable in Idaho right now but it's gorgeous in the Sea of Cortez. In four months it will be hot and miserable in the Sea of Cortez and it will be Gorgeous in Idaho.

I know you have abundant firewood but for at least this winter, do yourselves a favor just get a 25 lb propane tank and a mr. Buddy catalytic heater for your shed. You will be roasty toasty and won't be taking your lives in your hands with junk Chinese wood stoves.

The stove - the box say's it all - "made in China" - don't risk your lives and possessions ( and a swell shed). You're in bush country - there's got to be some backyard "engineers" producing small steel plate stoves locally.
