As someone who was himself homeless for two years, this show hit hard in the feels in addition to being funny and heartwarming. It's rare to see 'undesirables' highlighted in any sense on tv or in anime as anything more than a throw away gag or antagonist, so seeing them portrayed in an honest light with a meaningful story meant a great deal.

I cried laughter when Nitta almost got killed by the Yakuza and they quickly realized how badly they messed up. That was the best, the best of the best. 10 minutes of rolling laughter and his face is like "Dude, stop trying to make yourself feel better and let me out." Thats Gintama levels of funny and that truly is high praise.

The manga takes this to an even better turn! All of the characters literally grow up and now Hina is in highschool (but still the same old same old Hina with a few improvements here and there) and gosh it gets Steins;gate-esque in some later parts of the manga. Michael Johnson They are opting for the best there is in comedy. Impactful, over the top, yet not so over the top that it becomes immersion-breaking. Extremely hard to pull off, but when done right you get Hinamatsuri, where hilarious gags have massive impacts on characters. Every other comedy would have played Anzu's shoplifting and her money being taken away by the residents to compensate for it as a cheap gag, but Hinamatsuri builds on it. Every other anime would have played her being homeless for a cheap gag, but Hinamatsuri made it the base of Anzu's character arc from a brat to a nice, humble and helpful person. Every other anime would have returned to the status quo after the bartender scene, but not Hinamatsuri!

This year is really good for anime - Saiki S2, BNHA S3, Shokugeki, Hinamatsuri, Grand Blue, Darling in the Franxx(when its being good), Takagi-san, Fate/Extra, Jojo Part 5: Vento Aureo, Kaguya-sama etc.

I discovered Hinamatsuri when I saw a GIF of the Kung Fu fight and got really excited, because honestly it was better choreographed and animated than 95% of action anime, and I assumed it was going to be a martial arts anime full of action. I got blue balled by Hinamatsuri, but I can’t be mad at them, because it was one of the best comedies I have watched in a long time.

One thing that really makes me love this show is the way it humanises its characters by using elements of drama. It is the same as with GTO, the dramatic scenes make the characters seem more human, elevating them from being cardboard-cutouts for the next punchline to feeling like real people. In this way, it not only makes you more invested in the story but also enhances the jokes. I wish more shows would use this style of comedy instead of the punchline-driven, never changing sitcom wannabees we get all too often.

I finished this show today... I've encountered anime that had good balances of comedy and emotion, but absolutely NONE have come near this one. Hina is best potato. Anzue is best Genki Gorl. Hitomi is best empress. Nitta is best daddy goober. Mao is best loner (with literally 2 skits of screentime). Shinjou is best chunibyou (with literally 1 skit). Everyone is best maita. I just finished the first season of Hinamatsuri and It was incredible. The gags as you mentioned were actually funny. The writing and editing was better than most animes. I heard that it wasnt as popular in Japan so it may not get another season. I dont want that if international fans raise there voices. They studios will have to listen. Another show like this would be Saiki K. The plot revolves around a psychic trying to keep his power hidden and the diaster that come from that. Its on Netflix they just posted season 2 so Ill watch that later. Thank you fot reading.

I was wondering why this show wasn't getting talked about since I haven't seen many people talking about it. I watched some clips of it a week back and I was genuinely confused why people hadn't picked this series up, since its delivered nothing but quality. I guess people are more interested in a shitty adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul:Re than a genuinely good series.

And really… there aren't many anime that are "talked about" this season. Megalo Box and Aggretsuko seem to be the only ones that get any sort of hype (save for MHA, obviously). It's not for lack of good shows either.

Lyendith You actually reminded me to go watch Aggretsuko. But yeah this season seems kind of oddly silent. It's not that there aren't some big names scattered around either. With Tokyo Ghoul, Hero Aca and Shokugeki no Soma sitting pretty, there doesn't seem to be much discussion about anything other than Hero Aca. I guess that may be due to the fact that Tokyo Ghoul: Re's adaptation is complete ass, and we've had so much Shokugeki no Soma in the past 2 years that people are probably stuffed, pun intended. Hopefully MB's video marks a surge of popularity for a series that really does deserve it.

It definitely most underrated anime and probably will stay that way for the rest of this year. I am surprised no one talking about it despite the quality of this show offer. great over the top jokes, interesting character, even have good animation.

Hinamatsuri is perfect -- the greatest thing ever created. Anzu is a precious gem that I want to adopt. Hitomi is the hard-working, studious kid that I was that turned into the tired, cynical adult that I am currently.

“This may be a possible spoiler” Anzu is just the sweetest thing! She though she was going to be eliminated in one episode and she actually shouts out thanks to her adopted mom and dad for her wonderful life before awaiting her fate. Of course she doesn’t die, but you can see how much she cares about her new family by her actions. It turned really serious to really funny so fast.

Well, atleast Utako is nice to people in her neighborhood. Remember, she is involved in capturing Anzu when she became a thief, and later looking for someone to adopt her if I remember correctly. She protested when the government decided to get rid of the homeless even though it didn't work. But yeah, the way she treated hitomi is terrible, though it is the beginning in the greatest gag of this series, lol

I watched the first episode , but all the pausing and rewinding I had to do to read the superfast subtitles completely ruined my mood. Might be funny for people who don't have to rely on subtitles, but for me it was mostly irritating and annoying.

Im so glad someone has covered hinamatsuri I have been thinking since I watched the first episode that this show is amazing and is the star of the season and I felt it was being left out I haven't loved a comedy anime that much since I watched konosuba
