As a song on its own, I would not like Wild Honey Pie… but as an interstitial piece connecting the music on either side of it, I think it functions really well. Revolution 9 is not a bad song because it's not a song per se (or at least, not in the conventional general understanding of it). However, in my opinion, it is (like I Am The Walrus) another fantastic act of transgression towards the pre-conception of what a song is supposed to be, and another testament of The Beatles fearless approach to songwriting. And that's why I hate when other (great) artists like Lou Reed, Frank Zappa, or even Pete Townshend dared to accuse The Beatles of being just a commercial pop band. The Beatles walked territories no one dared to cross till that point. Take "Trout Mask Replica" (released the following year) and tell me there's no act of transgression there either.

There's a pig snort on the mono version of Piggies that could bring down the capitalist system on its own. Revolution 1 (Take 18), which is up officially on YT, is the one that formed the starting point for Revolution 9. I find it weird that people would suggest You Really Got A Hold On Me (which I love) and not mention Hold Me Tight or Little Child on the same album, which are both pretty poor. But any list of their worst songs is going to be subjective. And even songs with (surely?) objectively poor lyrics like Baby You're A Rich Man and All You Need Is Love will have something that redeems them in the performance. Yoko also wasn't even a member of the band...but they caved when he wouldn't budge on that issue. IMO Hey Jude should have been on the album in it's place, or You Know My Name Look Up the Number would have been hilarious to include on the album instead as the next to last cut on side 4... just before Goodnight which Ringo sang.

Certainly, everyone who has heard the group can name a handful of tracks that they could live without. I'm no different in that respect, but one of the tracks I would never even think of cutting is "Revolution 9". More than a simple collection of random sounds, it can be viewed as an apocalyptic vision. Lennon once remarked that he wanted the ending of "A Day in the Life" to build up from nothing to the end of the world. "Revolution 9" _is_ the screaming, chaotic end of the world. When viewed in this way, the album's closing track, "Good Night" transforms from a maudlin pop-song semi-parody into a chilling coda: "Now the sun turns out its light...", as in PERMANENTLY! "Good night. Everybody. Everywhere." Forever?

It underlines the unbelievable versatility of the Beatles and also a certain chutzpah, to hit their fans, which a lot of them of still have surely played "PS, I love you" or "From me to you", with something like that again, after the already preceding "new" sounds since 1966. It's definitely a "research area" anyway, which fans have accompanied the musical development of the Beatles throughout and which ones, at some point, with all the unusual sounds, jumped off. Incidentally, at least that's a personal effect, "Revolution 9" seems more intense, when one listen to the collage in absolute darkness.

Even in comparison to their 60s cohorts like The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Byrds, etc., all of whom made great albums, The Beatles made incredibly good albums with comparatively few weak tracks. That said, there are a few Beatles songs that I personally dislike. When I'm 64 and Honey Pie are probably my absolute least favourites - Paul's music hall style doesn't appeal to me, and I thought The Kinks were better at translating that style into a rock context (eg. Dedicated Follower Of Fashion, A Well Respected Man, Sunny Afternoon, etc.). I also dislike the cover of Till There Was You, just because it's too loungey, and Paul is trying to appeal to the grandmas (his most annoying trait, musically). I also don't like the finished version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, which to my ears is whining bummer music (yes, I know Clapton is on it and he's God, but I still don't like it) - on the other hand, I like George's acoustic demo of it, which is more subdued and sad, but less "bummed out". As for Revolution 9, I actually don't mind that one every once in a while, as I have a weakness for strange electronic music. Overall, all artists are human, and they can sometimes create work that is either substandard or just doesn't appeal to many people. The Beatles were no exception - they just produced much less crap than most other bands or artists. (God, this is long.......)

John says that The White Album is a list of solo songs, but Ringo says that it's his favourite album because for him it's the most true "band" album. So, like, the exact opposite. There are a lot of solo tracks, like Blackbird and Julia, but John is wrong when he says there isn't a single Beatles song. Birthday is a Beatles song; it was created in studio like Hey Bulldog. I would also argue that Glass Onion is a Beatles song. But what IS a Beatles song? Some people believe that there are no songs where all four Beatles play; there are in fact at least 13 (more if you count vocals). Surprise! Honey Pie is one of them! So is Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da! So while you can argue that it may not be a "Beatles song", all four Beatles do PLAY on it.

Couldn’t George Martin have said “Boys, this is complete shit 💩!” 2. I’m Happy Just To Dance With You - I think this is John’s composition. Nice beat, but not up to par. 3. So audience Pickford worst Beatles song that in my mind would be CARNIVAL OF LIGHT. It has never been officially released. It was created by John Lennon for an art exhibition all the other Beatles don't really like it. It's 15 minutes long and it doesn't really go anywhere it's interesting, but g really boring. If you like music concrete there's lots of other places to go. Not by the Beatles either. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2bTZ61uhqaJj7c I don't think you're going to actually like this as much as the original mix of LET IT BE. If I'm wrong and you like it. All the best to you. It doesn't go anywhere and if you really like it. You probably like the esoteric music I did in the late 90s better. Though probably not!

John hated MAXWELL'S SILVER HAMMER so much he deliberately got in a car accident so he didn't have to be in the studio to participate in it being recorded. That's some serious hatred girl!

I'm always sceptical when an artist says that a work means whatever the audience wants it to mean. Honestly? Literally? Almost invariably when someone proposes a meaning they really don't like the artist backtracks instantaneously. "So you think that everyone left handed should be slaughtered on sight?" "No, no, no!"

it is not really a song --- a sound scape perhaps

The Beatles had no bad songs. Some were better or worse than others. One I didn’t care for was Mr Moonlight. John’s vocal performance was great, but it was a cheesy song, songwriting-wise. Terrible.
@larsland Жыл бұрын
You're definitely not alone in that opinion on Mr Moonlight.
@shaunstuart4623 Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah? How would you have liked to see them do it live? Definitely not cheesy!! (They didn’t write it though).

When john lennon was making this song with yoko he was quoted as saying “‘Avant-garde is French for bullshit”.....so, it was just an experiment high on heroin. ...

Personal Beatles no-go's: "Tell me why", mainly because of the goofy falsetto part, that made me reflexively cover my ears. Then "I need you". Many like the track, for me the song is dull and doesn't work musically. A terrible arrangement. And: "The long and winding road". What a lame tearjerker. "Mother Nature's son" is borderline and for "Good Night" one would have to chastise the Beatles, to release something like that - but, hey, luckily they let Ringo sing it (I'm sure, Lennon's son didn't want the track, so Lennon thought to himself, Ringo will like it), so the seriousness is out and the Mantovani kitsch is at least a bit funny. Also with "Here, there and everywhere" and "Hold me tight" my enthusiasm is pretty limited...

I’m going to steal “my enthusiasm is pretty limited.” That’s awesome.
