Imo, mixing a Great Dane and St. Bernard together makes an absolutely stunning dog. This handsome boy really stands out. I don't know if mixing these two breeds together is a good idea as I don't know enough about their individual health issues, but they sure do produce beautiful pups, at least this fellow is.

@@1234jazyI think a lot of people see that St. Bernards are mostly gentle giants and also make really cute puppies. They don’t always see the work that should go into these large breeds. So when they get older and start coming more into their personalities and showing who they really are their owners may not be quite as prepared as they thought they were. One thing I saw working in animal rescue myself is that people get puppies and kittens thinking they’ll be perfect for their family but they don’t always do their research on the breeds. Obviously his previous family did put some work into him since he knows his basic commands. But it sounds like they weren’t prepared for how protective Bernards can be. Same goes for Great Danes. Yeah they’re mostly very chill dogs. But just like every other dog they need to be around people at least. It’s aggravating to say the least when I see stories like Tiny’s. He’s probably a great dog he just needs some more training and socializing.

We used to have a St. Bernard. He was an extremely laid back dog. It never occurred to us that he could be aggressive as he didn’t show that side. Until my sister and I were looking after our parents farm alone for a few days. 😳 he did bite a stranger that came onto the yard without caution. Walked up to the door with assertiveness. Our dog reminded him that there was protocol. It wasn’t a serious bite but scared us. We were more watchful after that. He was protecting us but still 🤷♀️. Lovely dog as a loving pet. Excellent job cleaning him up ❤❤

We have 2 rescue dogs. The rescue gave us a hand-out advising an approximate timeliness for our dog/people relationship to progress. It is 3 days for them to de-compress & begin to feel safe/3 weeks for them to start to understand routines / 3 months to start seeing them trust & their true personality begins to show. We have rescues from a hoarding situation & a backyard breeder. The 3/3/3 rule isn't an exact schedule but does help new 'families' understand that the whole bonding situation requires time & patience. You will do fine, best wishes.

Oh, he's such a sweet boy! I mean, it was a workout and there was definitely the "nope" bite attempt for his nails, but that didn't look reactive/aggressive to me at all. I'm continually appreciative both of how Vanessa leaves all of this in here for us to see and points it out, as well as watching her shut things down to address and assess the situation appropriately. He was JUST starting to panic himself and she stopped everything -- that actually helps reinforce trust. Like horses, if dogs (and other pets!) see we will stop situations that make them genuinely afraid as soon as we see signs of it, they will trust us more to keep them safe and know we are taking their feelings/comfort into account. It doesn't necessarily mean we won't put them in situations they don't like, but they will trust that we are listening, that we hear them, and that we understand. It's something that happens so quickly most people can miss it. There are a LOT of years of behavioural experience coming into play in this entire video, from Vanessa explaining about not getting into the shower immediately with the dog to the dog's reaction to the cameraman -- this is honestly an incredible series of displays of both experience, staying calm, preventative measures, but all while still making a first groom as much of a positive experience as it was a necessary one. I'm seriously in awe. It's not appropriate behaviour, the attempt at a bite, but it looked more like it's going to be a training reinforcement thing than fear, thank goodness. He didn't like it, but he wasn't thrilled by the shower or dryer and yet didn't try to chomp either, and those are really good signs. We take for granted dogs having been taught the "don't bite people/things" rules, but it's absolutely not something that comes instinctively. It's actually against their instincts, they use their mouth as a tool, so ensuring they have avenues to do so (like appropriate toys, puzzle feeders, etc) helps ensure they don't use it in other places. I'm not at all trying to downplay how serious it is, though. I've been bitten twice by large dogs (Rottweiler and Golden Retriever), both fear-reactive bites as fast as what you see here, and the damage was pretty bad. I still have puncture scars from both, but the crush damage was much worse. Best disarming via Happy Hoodie I've ever seen! Smart boy, too. He realized the shower wasn't murdering him and became a rock. You can REALLY see the Dane in him once the Bernard floof is tamped down. Those nails, though! I know Vanessa is incredibly strong, and the double-handed grip to cut through those long talons made my hands hurt in sympathy. At least they seem to be light coloured, dark nails are my kryptonite. Now I wonder how often groomers need their nail clippers sharpened, phew. I'm so fortunate my cat lets me do his nails while he's sprawled upside-down in my lap, purring his head off. 😂
