"You have no enemies" (Vinland Saga - Thorfinn/Thors)

In episode 2 of Vinland Saga, Thors tells Thorfinn that "He has no enemies".
This is now one of the top-most searched lines in all of anime, but it doesn't seem to make any sense at first. Just a few minutes before, we saw how Thorfinn and the rest of the village clearly do have enemies.
However I saw what Thors said a little differently, whilst I haven't read the manga, and so later events may contradict this video, it seems to me that what he meant by "You have no enemies" was a bit different to how Thorfinn took it.
Slight correction: When I mentioned "Episode 11" it's actually episode 10.

During the dream (one of the crucial points of the manga) we see the two faces of the medal: the upside, a green peaceful land with Thors (you have no enemies), and the downside, the war itself, where everyone is your enemy except yourself. So i see it more as You have no enemies, except yourself. You are your only enemy, and the only way to become a true warrior it's to fight no one but yourself, your weakness, your fears, in order to become a better person. Life is difficult and uphill. The viking world, where war and death are important part of the culture, and Thorfinn, who understands life and peace, will fight against this cruel world itself to create something different. But the only way to achieve this dream it's a challenge with himself (in the dream he carries all the people he has killed). This was my pov about the meaning of the dream with the contrast "Everyone is your enemy, except yourself/You have no enemies, except yourself)

Thors' philosophy is one that you can ONLY gain from understanding hardship, suffering and yourself. If you use it from the get go you "understand" it but you don't know yourself. Knowing what you're capable of is prerequisite to that philosophy and that requires making bad, stupid or impulsive decisions. Your past actions and others' are physical chains that bind you and limit your available options in the now, only once you gain the chains and see them can you begin the work of freeing yourself from the restrictions and pain of the past.

Yes, people use past experiences to help make better decisions… But that doesn’t mean only people who have suffered greatly are the only capable of making good decisions. What a lot of people fail to realize is that "You have no enemies" and "There is no one it's okay to hurt" were Thors' lessons to a 6-year old child. He had to make the message simple, digestible and absolute so a child could get it. No 6-year old is going to understand the nuance behind a myriad of life situations at that age and they will learn and develop their values as they grow older. Of course, now it's a key message from the manga, but as adults and people viewing it from an outside perspective, we can discuss it in a non-literal way.

Plus, even with the nuance, the message is quite clear, as indeed nobody deserves to be hurt, nothing good has ever come out of hurting just because you think someone deserves it. You only hurt in the last of situations, where it means that if you don't do it, innocents will pay the price, and even then, there was something else you could've done, there are always alternatives and things you can try to do, you just weren't aware of it, and that's fine as long as you keep trying.

Even then, its still pretty simple to fully understand as an adult when you look at those two quotes. "There is no one its okay to hurt" means exactly that. When defending yourself, you arent intentionally trying to hurt someone, youre trying to protect yourself (or others if the situation requires it). "You have no enemies" really means there is no one you need to hate or hold extreme resentment towards, including yourself. There are of course people you cannot forgive, but this does not mean you need to hold grudge or hate towards them for your entire life. Letting go of hate and spreading peace and love leads to happier and joyful life, which is all Thors wanted for Thorfinn.

I think something really crucial about the first season is that Askeladd also mirrors Thorfinn with his own story. Askeladd was raised by his mother, and eventually, at a young age, he had to start taking care of her (instead of the other way around) because she was losing her mind. upon meeting his father, Askeladd took the time to get close to the man. over the course of two years he did this, just so he could kill him... and I think the reason why Askeladd was able to be premeditated about it is because he was slightly older when he got the idea in his head. but after that, Askeladd goes on to wreak havoc everywhere he goes. and it's emphasized that this destructive part of himself is more tied to his father than his mother, not only in terms of lineage, but in terms of who his actions harm/benefit (culturally speaking), and how he is recognized. Askeladd is only asked if he is his father's son, after he tries to strike the man with a sword. this is a perfect example of the hypocrisy of spite, and the way that the expression of grief can bypass the person you love, and get wrapped up in the person you hate instead. to get back at someone... to give them a taste of their own medicine, an eye for an eye... it forces you to match them. it forces you to resemble the person you hate. and this is especially twisted, because it lets you pretend that you're doing it because of the depth of your love. but in Vinland Saga, each case of this features the loss of someone that the world really needed. they are, fundamentally, someone who would never have wanted the violence that results. the reason they were loved... the reason their loss makes your heart ache... it's because they weren't part of the problem. they were part of the solution, and the people they leave behind have a choice to make. to be like them, and to keep them alive in the world with your actions, means to move away from violence, and to embody the peace that you truly remember them for. giving in to your own frustration, and lashing out at people in a similar way to how you were hurt? that only erases them all the more... it kills them even further, because it lets them leave nothing behind as their legacy. Askeladd's behavior in the bulk of his adult life was more akin to what his father would've done... right down to the acquisition of an angry, frustrated child, following him around full of hatred, like a vengeful ghost... because of something that Askeladd definitely did. Askeladd doesn't kill Thorfinn, even though it probably would've been easier in the long run. and while this may be due to the convenience of using him... I think to some degree, Askeladd thinks he deserves to be haunted. he has no right to shy away from reaping what he sowed. but, horrifyingly, Thorfinn is wracking up similar sins. this is part of what Thors knew as well. you have to make the decision to end the cycle of violence with yourself. because if you keep harming people over and over again, you lose the right to demand protection for the things you love when it matters. Thorkell recognized the look of a true warrior in Thors, right as Thors was leaving the battlefield to go raise his daughter. and I think that's because Thors understood the truth. the hardest battle you could ever choose, is to try and nurture something fragile, even once you've seen, firsthand, how violent and destructive this world can potentially be. how do you carve out a space where something gentle can thrive? how do you accept that you are only one person... one small part of a very large world, which won't always let you guarantee the safety of the things you hold dear. "you have no enemies. nobody has enemies. there is no one who deserves to be hurt." this may not always be a statement of fact. but it is a statement of intent.

This is SUCH a powerful lesson that Thors tries to impart to Thorfinn (and I feel like successfully...it just takes time and experience to understand and then apply it). And I simply cannot believe that people have been hating on S.2 of VS. This is absolutely compelling work on all levels. For a long time I didnt understand the importance of forgiveness, to others and myself. I always had my values, which I believe is a good thing, but I judged other people and myself when they didnt live up to those values. I had to figure out how to let go because if I didn't I would have gone crazy. I was a very angry and resentful person. I used to blame people for the way I turned out and maybe I was right but I'm not going to let them be the controlling factor in my life. The main character of the anime completely loses his will to live after he failed in getting revenge because he was so fixated on killing ONE MAN that he failed to think about what happens after. His decision to become a pacifist is very intentional because he realize that in his lust for revenge he hurt countless people unrelated to his need for vengeance. This same message is depicted in Batman comics as well, it's not a naive idea at all. If we choose to harm innocent people because how people have hurt us then we are no better than the people who hurt us first

This phrase got me deep, I'm at a point in life where I'm trying to accept more, love myself, and it is true that forgiving others helps to forgive ourselves and Thors is also right about keeping the ability to fight, when people are mean to you, when they want to hurt you, when they make you their enemy you still need to stand your ground even if it's difficult. "Manga spoiler" There a dude in the manga that hates Thors because of how he looks at him with "pity" and THIS is something I'm beginning to deal with on a daily basis, some people make your their enemy JUST because you exist and how you look at them, they hate you because you're at peace with yourself when they're not and these people always try to bring war to you. The war inside me is finally ending but some people try to start it again and it's very hard to know how to react because I'd want to be good with them but, like Thors, you can't turn the other cheek, you have to fight when people try to bring war to you because they can't accept your kindness and they hate you even more and then try to destroy you by any mean. I always thought the message here is the same, there will always be conflicts and "sides" to choose or to stand by to, but the people on the other side are not always going to be your opponents, even if in the present moment they appear to be so. Of course, I think both characters obviously go a little bit further than that, and each has a lot more to say with this as its basis, but I really like to think that Thors and The Boss would really bond through their ideals. The greatest warrior, the ultimate soldier.

The thing is, if thorfinn had just gotten over it and went back home after his father died, he and his village would’ve just been weak and susceptible to Vikings coming and sacking the place. It’s not virtuous to be weak, it’s virtuous to be strong but in control, exactly like Thors. It’s also not a virtue to just run away from violence and war and slavery. This show started off on such a good note with Thors, truly the pinnacle, but the author seems to not have any answers to the problems he’s so beautifully laid out, and the answers he does try to throw out are incredibly naive.

@@LessonsFromAnime I never said weakER, but it would have been easy pickings for any random viking group to destroy the whole village, and we would've had Einar all over again. And I loved your video, I agree with the premise that we should turn the other cheek and not become slaves to our passions. I think the only point I want to push back on is the idea that Thorfin should have just went back home rather than spend a decade fighting. First of all, I think Askeladd was a valuable and strong father figure, however flawed he may have been, had Thorfin stopped trying to duel him I think their relationship could've been much better. Secondly, because of his decision to pursue revenge, Thorfin was able to become a warrior strong enough to even stand toe to toe with Thorkell. I would argue that becoming this strong would now allow him to protect himself and everyone he loves back home.

I just thought of it in another light You have no enemies. But those you care for most certainly do. Thorfinn spent his childhood chasing revenge for himself, even if he convinced hisself it was for his fathers sake. Then he loses that chance to sate hisself and thus loses the enemy. At the start of Farmland Thorfin doesnt value his own life enough to use violence to defend it. Instead, it took the distress and threat on those he grew to care for that made him use violence again. And when you fight for others, you fight to protect, not to gain-to defend, not kill. At least if you’re talking in the literal sense of fighting for others. He now fights in an unbiased way. Because it isn’t personal like it was before. The enemies no longer have faces. Its not about him, and he fights unselfishly. But these are just my initial thoughts on it. Ill have to spend some time contemplating it.

I love how all these violently brutal manga's like berserk, vagabond, vinland saga and others propagate life morals and beauty of hope. While most safe shounen manga go to the routes of edginess in order to seem mature(looking at you Deku). I mean yeah the world is fucked you don't need to give us a dialogue to reiterated that. That's why best stories are often the ones about finding beauty and hope in otherwise hopeless world(made in abyss in a nutshell).

A scene worthy of so much analysis is the one where canute learns what love is. Damn, that scene made me realize that we literally live in Eden, paradise. When we were kicked out of the Garden, it wasnt physically but mentally as we were shackled with sin. Our hatred, our jealousy, our greed, our suffering, it blinds us to the true beauty of the world, and cuts us off from God's love. So, God's infinite love and the paradise he built is right HERE, beneath our feet and around us every day, but we are still so far away from it. I'm not religious, btw. This scene just hit me really hard and legitimately makes me appreciate life and the world more. Yeah, humans mess it up and continue to do so. But i am so grateful that i get to live in paradise. Look around you, you see many other intelligent-life harboring rocks out there? It's the greatest paradise in the universe, at least so far as we know!
