Such important info that people need to know. A lot of people think they are the problem and did something wrong when try to seed/overseed with big box products. But with 90% inert, you can do everything right and get little growth. Unreal. Great info as always Jimmy!

Jimmy, this is very important information. Especially when paying so much money for these bags of “seed”. Buying high quality seed seems expensive, but you are getting all seed. You have a beautiful lawn!!

The Vigoro was 88.91% annual rye grass with only 4.94% perennial rye grass. I would classify most of Pennington and Scott's products as "patch repair". Pennington's "The Rebels" line which wasn't shown is their only "pure seed" product, but it is coated. The Sta-Green is re-branded Pennington Sun and Shade mix. (Look at the cultivars on the tag, those are Pennington developed varieties) I use Barenbrug seed but I would caution the seed linked in the description is their yellow jacket coated seed. It's good seed I've used their RTF and RPR blends. But it will be 50% coating in the bag. You can still get their uncoated seed but you have to go through one of their distributors. I strictly use Barenbrug and Pennington seed. Scott's seed always seems to be full of weeds.

Just used the dense shade mix, sunny mix and perennial rye mix by Scott’s for lawn repair/over seeding. I guess we’ll see how it turns out but I have used those seed bags in the past and they’ve worked very nicely.

I don’t think he’s saying they won’t work, he’s pointing out a lot of the bag isn’t actually seed. You’re often paying more for convenience and a hefty markup.

Great video, an educated customer knows what to look for. When you are using a coated seed such as the Barenbrug coated seed does that permit users to bypass peat moss and do you still have to lightly work it into the soil even if it is coated seed ? Thx great content as always.
@JimmyLewisMows2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. For me, I would still use a light covering material like peat moss to help retain moisture and keep the seed hidden from birds. It’s just additional insurance.

Just a question here. But I have a tall fescue blend here in south eastern Michigan and I use a Toro stripe kit. In April - Late July, stripes very well! When August gets here, it’s a different story. The edges look uniform, but the middle looks totally different. I spoon feed and it’s nice and green just doesn’t look the same! Is this common?

Great video, But I wouldn't consider "Home Depot" or "Lowe's" your local hardware store. There's plenty of small local hardware stores (Koopmans, Ace, Menards, Barrows, True Value, Tractor Supply (ehh don't know about their seed quality)..that sell top quality seed. Just bought a 10lb bag of lesco 50/50 rye/bluegrass mix.. 99% seed. For $45 from site one landscaping supply...most small local hardware stores carry Jonathan Green which imo is just as good as any top quality seed you can buy online.

Question for ya! I'm in Lehi and have a small 10x10 yard in the front that past tenants have heavily neglected. The soil is completely unlevel, patches of sod didn't ever take, and the grass was already ~70% dead. I ended up deciding to just scrap it, so I bought a spray and killed the lawn off, then scalped it and attempted to dethatch it manually but the sod was so weakly taken that when dethatching it just rips up all of the dead sod. What would you recommend I do from this point? I was intending to till it, rake out all the organic matter I could, then add a bit of soil to level it out, roll it, seed it, and go from there. Only concern would be the few sprinklers I have in there right now. Perhaps I can just dig them out as a whole unit and set them aside then reinstall after I till? Whatcha think?

@lonedog66872 жыл бұрын
You did not do a good job of explaining the difference in pure seed, uncoated without moisture holding agents or fertilizer and coated seed with moisture holding agents and fertilizer and when or how to use each. Inert matter can be non helpful fillers or it can be beneficial. You also did not specify if you were choosing a product for a new lawn or an overseed or a fix. Good video but lacking key points. Happy Mowing !!!
@gmlongo12 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Some of these have mulch, fertilizer, and/or seed coating, which is intentional inert matter and can be helpful.
@JimmyLewisMows2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I think those are fair points and I could have gone into that, but the point I’m making is that there is clearly no standard for what falls into the inert matter category. It’s just anything that’s not seed. As we see it can be the coating, it can be peat moss, fertilizer, etc. For what it’s worth, I think the coating technology is awesome. But it’s very different than the remaining half of the bag being filled with fertilizer. It’s a pretty interesting topic and I think it shows that there’s lots of room for improvement and transparency in seed marketing. There’s still lots to learn here and I’m glad we can start having conversations like this. Thanks for your input.
