Toni Collette gained a bunch of weight so she could play this role. I’m so glad she did because she was perfect in the role. I felt so bad for the mother in this film and that it took her dying to wake Muriel up to what she needed to do with her life. This movie will always be a favorite though.

Oh I’m SO happy you’ve done this! My mother nursed with Jeanie Drynan, who played Muriel’s mother, who was a nurse before her acting career took off. They weren’t close but they were friends and mum was always so proud of Jeanie’s achievements. And I grew up in a house in Muriel Street! This film resonates so much with me. I love Abba so much, and Toni Collette, and this film. And you dear Kemi❤️

I feel bad that you’re kinda downing Muriel’s Mom. Her Father kept her from doing anything. He was the one who made her feel like nothing and not letting her do anything with the kids. He was an awful person and he took advantage of her constantly. The kids saw the way the Dad treated her & thought it was ok to treat her like crap too.

I didn’t down her, I just expressed the evils of letting another person control her. She stood out to me as a character more than Muriel did. As a lawyer, I see this happen with women all the time - where they get married and they don’t take responsibility for their lives or they rely on the every whim of a spouse . I’m beautiful- I’m married syndrome. It’s not healthy. Yes - she was emotionally abused but so were her children - when u have kids you have a duty to get out of toxic situations. All her children had trauma right under her nose. There father was a beast - I clearly said that. I’m not saying this is easy. It’s not but there has to be a fight. A mental fight against oppression. The will power to move out. To atleast try. It’s tough love but it’s the truth.

It's sad that she was walked all over and lost every shred of self-confidence which would have made her feel trapped. She needed someone to have her back, she needed someone like @ScenecrlyK.S.O. to go in that house and give her some encouragement to get herself sorted as an independent person, not following her husband like an abused puppy. No one had any respect for her which is depressing to see, she didn't have any respect for herself sadly.
@BiddyBiccy
@BiddyBiccy Ай бұрын
But when you're emotionally traumatised and have been made to feel worthless, it's very difficult to leave the abuser. Everything you said about motherhood was right, but only someone with mental strength and self-worth can do the things you're saying. Abusers steal a person's self-worth, and it happens so gradually they don't even notice, and an abuser is by nature controlling - they control a person's mind as well as their behaviour, using manipulation techniques such as gaslighting. It makes the victim doubt their own reality. When a woman is emotionally abused by a man like Bill Heslop, she needs help to get away from it. She can't do it by herself. Often she will have grown up with an abusive parent, or something else happened in her life to make her lose her personal boundaries. Sometimes it takes a traumatic event to escape from an abusive relationship. The sad thing in this film is if Muriel's mother hadn't reached breaking point she may have been able to start her life again after her husband left, and finally find some self-worth. But she was too broken to feel any hope.

I love this film it really shows what happens if you don’t have any self worth even if you do try to stay positive, the lies you have to tell yourself and others just to keep going. Muriel was lucky and managed to realise her own self worth in the end and got stronger not everyone does

This was an absolutely HUGE hit in Australia, helping to reignite ABBAs career in Australia and making them cool again. It launched Toni Collette's career into the stratosphere. Same with Rachel Griffiths. They both moved to America and became stars. Toni in film and tv, like The Sixth Sense, and the United States of Tara; and Rachel in tv shows like Six Feet Under, and Brothers and Sisters. I suggest the Toni Collette film Connie and Carla for Pride month, its sort of a spin on Some Like it Hot, where 2 girls hide from the mob dressed as drag queens.

It’s an amazing movie, so bittersweet with hilarious moments but underneath all, so much pain and drama in Muriel’s family. Like others said I always felt so sad for her mother… and somehow her siblings too. I always love your take on women. Choose the life you want, at home with a family or by yourself independently but always have options and skills so you can use if and when needed to support yourself.

It really is so important how you speak to your children. Bill Heslop put them down, calling them useless blaming them for his short comings. His poor wife, self esteem just shattered. I’m kind of glad Muriel stole from him lol and managed to get away from him and that small town mentality.

A random suggestion maybe already made to you on your Patreon but another film with great music and a woman with low self esteem and unhappy family life overcoming things is 'Little Voice' Quite different to this film in some ways, it's Northern England setting wise but the class vibe is similar, some of the themes, it's another comedy drama , very funny but with sadness and bite. Anyway, just an idea , I think you'd like it.

That was the whole point, she was trying so hard to get away from her family and trying to not be like them, she thought marrying this guy would somehow change her but she doesn’t meet her redemption genuinely until her mum actually dies, so sad but she does get there in the end.
@siancolburn5163

I felt you were unnecessarily harsh to her mother. It's all very well encouraging independence, but we can tell from the ages of her kids that she's served a long term sentence with a nasty, manipulative husband. Everything he does is to promote his own image and belittles the entire family. He doesn't encourage them but attempts band aid solutions by getting them jobs they haven't learned the skills for. He blames his wife for everything and doesn't even see that her basic needs, ie comfy shoes, are met. She's a victim of years of psychological abuse, and we see that her son thinks that hitting her is acceptable too. My heart breaks for her because she probably used to be a promising young woman.

Aussie classic. Also taking care of the kids SHOULD be enough. It creates other skill sets. Our society sucks! Also she was clearly abused. You’re in law and you can’t recognise that mother was emotionally abused to the point she was broken? Come on now…
@ScenecrlyK.S.O.
@ScenecrlyK.S.O. Ай бұрын
Yes, I am in law and taking care of kids IS NOT ENOUGH in the real world and today's time. Statistics show housewives suffer the most when it comes to domestic violence and abuse - having a job outside the home has helped many women escape men like we see in this film. So when I PLEAD with women to get jobs - that is my EXPERT and LEGAL advise. Clearly, you have a penchant for not listening to what I say but the thoughts you have going on within - so I'll let you carry on with your musings.
@Angelicwings1
@Angelicwings1 Ай бұрын
@@ScenecrlyK.S.O.you clearly aren’t listening to me which is sad because I actually like you very much. I don’t think you quite get why I disagree with you. In our society a person shouldn’t have to do so much to be deemed worthy and putting pressure on someone to keep doing more and more is not ok. Raising children should be achievement enough but our society doesn’t acknowledge you unless you make money and that makes me furious.
@ScenecrlyK.S.O.
@ScenecrlyK.S.O. Ай бұрын
It is NOT achievement enough, I stand by what I said and the advice I gave. Regardless of your disagreement - your method 'telling women raising children as wives and mothers is enough' has set MANY women up for financial failure, emotional and physical abuse - leaving them at the mercy of unscrupulous men/partners. You called my legal expertise to question and regardless of you 'liking' me - that crosses the line into being rude. The fact you know very little about me should caution you. KZbin is not real life. I CLEARLY called out her abuse and you still carried on with the lie - like I never mentioned it. So yes, in my 16+ years of experience in criminal and family law - I have saved several women from continued abuse and mentored hundreds in staring their own business. Do not let my hobby as a reaction channel fool you as to my expertise on the law. I don't discuss it here because this is not what this channel is for. Finally, society is not here to cater to your beliefs and it is selfish to ask women to do the same. I'm setting them up to competent adults capable of functioning in the real world.
@Angelicwings1
@Angelicwings1 Ай бұрын
@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. I don’t call your legal expertise to question. In our society you’re right. What I’m saying is it’s not ok. Aren’t you expecting people to work with your beliefs by promoting societies stuff and in doing so resisting change? Think about it. I still think you are a wonderful lady but I think we are going to have to agree to disagree here
