What tips would you add to say no effectively at work?
@asadb19902 жыл бұрын
what about saying no to social events afterhours. i don't care to get to know my work colleagues. and frankly the minute i leave, i will be forgotten.

When I was younger I used to feel guilty about saying no to requests at work. Then I got a mentor who said to think of it as defending your time instead of saying no. That mind shift really helped me to say no more often and focus on the important things.

Thank you for the tips! I enforced my first boundary and said “no” last week at my job. It wasn’t easy and people were not pleased but thankfully my manager backed me up.

It's awesome you have a manager who backed you up, that puts you at an advantage to hold those boundaries!

Say Yes to high visibility work & say No to things that no one's gonna notice if it's done or not. Say No effectively, with no guilt & suggest a redirect whenever possible.

I was asked to fill in for a month after someone quit. That month has lasted 2 years and 3 months. Now they are asking me to operate machines for a month because we are behind on orders. We are a year behind. I don't think my help for a month will fix that. I've been telling them no. I'm not going to get stuck with this for years too.

FANTASTIC topic! This needs to be talked about more. As a recovering people pleaser this was definitely hard for me.

One thing that I have learned is to say ‘No’ to people from other teams and departments if the task is menial and if it isn’t related to my role or team. I will also say ‘No’ if it will not help advance the goals, objectives and strategies of the company. It’s empowering to say ‘No’ especially when the task being asked will bring no value to the company or to your input and when there will be no visibility if you did volunteer and it gets done. Being helpful to others within the workplace is a must but a line or boundary should be set regarding these matters. It’s all about striking a balance based on determining the level of value that will be generated for the company if you do volunteer to work and devote some of your time to this task.

The problem with this advice is it assumes your boss is asking you to do something in good faith. How do you respond when they ask you to do something that is THEIR responsibility?

I've started saying no recently at work. Quickly found out how many entitled co workers I have.
@stephenbayer39092 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the ask and what my current workload looks like. Sometimes I'll say "I'd love to help but I have a report that's due tomorrow that I have to focus on." If it's my boss, I might say something like "I can work on this but I'll have to set aside working on X while I do." Then I'll let them sit with that and decide whether they really want me to do this other task while task X isn't being worked on.

i found it easier to simply let the person trying to give you work know what you are working on. and how taking on their work will effect that. bring the issue to direct supervisor if need be. and make it feel like a favor as much as possible.

I just started a job, into my fifth week and I'm the one that has the most work load because I learned faster than the others. The lead just got promoted so she is passing her responsibilities to train in her role, but we are all new. She does let me know Im doing good but I don't want to get more things added because I feel.like I'm being stretched thin being new and having to rush and finish. Almost everyday I have to work after hours to finish.

Everything was important to my boss. Every task was important. Sometimes saying no means you might displease your boss. Or run the risk of being a pack donkey. Sometimes that distinction between necessary and unnecessary tasks is not something your boss can provide. Sometimes you’ll be stretched too thin and you need to say no. I’ve tried many approaches to saying no. I was clear , respectful and upfront. It did not work. I had to leave. Work was amazing but my boss killed my vibe . He told me I was resistant to work 🤷♀️ boundaries are healthy but not everyone will respect them.

B with an itch 🤣Now that my childish comment is out of the way, I'd just like to say that when you do say no, how they react is a measure to how toxic the environment is. If they can't take no for an answer, even when you're at grade A burnout, it's best to walk away.
@JenniferBrick2 жыл бұрын
KZbin counts the real world as moderate profanity (even though most ambitious women are called it regularly, however I digress)... so I had to use the nice way of saying it haha! Totally agree with knowing the walk away point, especially when you're at burnout levels.

I don't know your exact situation, but I would say that we can only do what's within reason and with our current schedule or tasks in mind. Anything outside of that is either unreasonable or simply unfeasible. That's not to say that we can't be flexible from time to time or change up priorities, depending on the circumstances, of course. But I do hear you, that's a tough one for sure. 🤔
