When you start an SMP with friends, you usually find yourself in this particular position where you are all living next to each other with either multiple patches of bases or a common one. It's funny because it's the start, you've not really planned anything and you're just having fun together and for the most part everyone's online. Then comes the time where you are all already pretty stuffed, the server's been going on for a week and it becomes more challenging for everyone to be online simultaneously, not due to boredom, but rather due to differing schedules. This is also the part where you all start leaving the main base and go make your own base away from spawn, where you create your own farms and build your own projects. This is the moment where either you've got a pretty good idea of what you wanna do, or you're planning to find it quickly. So you start to build your base, you then find yourself in front of a mountain and see some potential to it, so you start to pile up small projects around your main one and you have quite a lot of energy to put into it. Then it's been even longer, you have this friend that's already stopped playing by lack of time or boredom, but it's okay because the others are still here, with less energy than before and the same thing applies to you. You find yourself struggling more with the projects, you still try to finish them but you end up rushing some or just abandon them. It's hard to keep your motivation alive when you're doing the same thing repeatedly. It's always good to renew your activities and find new challenges to avoid boredom. And then comes the part where it's been quite a while already, half the server's stopped playing or hardly ever logs on, some of them finished their projects and just left because they had nothing more to do, and the other part abandoned, leaving their forever unfinished projects behind. This is the part where your server starts to see its end with most players nearing completion of their projects, crafting their Magnum Opuses, and eventually leaving. Finally, here you are, alone on the server, wandering around, everyone's gone, you fly around with your elytras to other people's bases and you can see what they left behind. The remnants of a server once full of life. And then you go back to spawn, where it all began, where you had fun with all of your friends the previous year or something, where you trapped your friend in a hole with your creeper and were all harassed by phantoms because you forgot to sleep.. And now it's just a dead and it's never going to be alive again, not on this world at least, all these builds will be lost, frozen in time in a hard drive, left to rot. Because that's the thing about time, it's slow, really slow, but you only truly notice the end of an era when you passed it. The hardest part is not to build your life, it's to accept that it will end. (not sure it really means anything but if you read everything, you probably get me) It seems like I was really inspired writing this text lol, but it's mainly what happens to every SMPs, that's why you make new ones to have fun again, but the cycle repeats haha.

For Coldcraft, the reason the server turned to singleplayer was not to lack of boredom. Quite the opposite. For us, we kept each other going. The more the community thrived, the more we worked together, the more we were inspired to continue to make something that would one up the last project. The problem is, we're adults now. It's getting harder and harder to dedicate the time we once had free, on a daily basis. What once was staying up till 3am making a giant farm, turned to "I've got half an hour next week free between classes". Time is something everyone takes for granted, and you never really realize it. Yes, everything will inevitably end, but the memories will live on forever. I have great memories of multiple servers I was apart of. Several of those people I haven't talked to in years, but I still love 'em to death. Time forced us to grow up. We became different people, who's paths took us to different places. It's the unfortunate truth behind life, not just minecraft smps. But there is something you can do. Even when your paths diverge, that doesn't mean goodbye forever. Friendships can be rebuilt. That's the nice thing about friendships. If you make an effort, it won't be the end. I'm still good friends with a lot of the Coldcraft members despite it having ended. Craisin and I started a new server and continue to collaborate, Kori and I played through the entirety of God of War. And that other server- friendships spawned from that! So yes, people grow up; but you should never give up being a kid. Just because people grow, doesn't mean you have to give up having fun. Those servers may have ended, but now it's a bittersweet memory, that one day who knows; maybe you can relive it.

You're absolutely right, what I said wasn't about ALL servers, of course, and I understand what you're pointing out. However, after an extended period of time doing the same thing, on the same map, there is always a point where there's not really much more you wanna do. And yes, you can "resurrect" a server by increasing the interactions between players by a jillion percent, but you can't increase the lifespan of a server forever, people will eventually start to get bored after a while. It's just how most servers end, heat death or restart.

The "right moment" doesn't exist. You just have to start somewhere and take it one day at a time. Incredible filmmaking and story telling. Also underrated wireframing abilities I see 👀. Beautiful video Laynce!

Agreed!If you build one lego piece in a set a day, eventually the build gets done! Sure it’s slow, but if the pace you’re going works for you, that’s what matters. The “right moment” is not a stagnant date. The “right moment” is whatever day you decide to begin. Progress is progress, forward or backwards. Sometimes the roads you walk are just oddly shaped! And thank you very much! It was definitely a challenge to turn placing dirt into something visually interesting, but I’m happy with the results! That was the first time I’ve done wireframing in survival too!

You have your whole life ahead of you. That's something I still have to keep in mind to this day. We're young, we've got time. Experiment, pick up new hobbies, explore the world! Do what you can to expand your knowledge in whatever way you can. And by far the most important part, have fun with it! It's your life, do what makes you happiest!

I want to do KZbin, I've attempted to for years but never taken the initiative to really go far with it or do much with it. Especially recently I've struggled too partly cause my current pc can't handle the things I want to do but also because I don't want to prioritize KZbin over doing things with friends and real life.

ill just fail again plus ive no ides where to start, so nah, i wont
@layncemc23 күн бұрын
the only way you can fail is if you don't start at all. messing up is okay, but how will you get anywhere in life if you stay still. you never know where one step can take you. i certainly didn't expect documenting my silly experiences in a minecraft server to lead to where i am today. if i gave up on that dream or never started, it would never have happened. i won't pretend like it's easy, but damn is it rewarding when you get to that payoff. the more steps you take, the more doors you open
