I LOVE hearing about pregnancy cravings. Weird food combos are my jam - unfortunately, I didn't have very interesting pregnancy cravings... just an intense need for anything lemon flavored with my first, and an intense need for mango everything with my second. I feel like I missed out on the fun cravings, and I think that's why I love hearing about everyone else's and living vicariously through that, lol.

hi Beryl - from the UK here - just want to say that cheesy baked beans are so part of our culture that the sandwich with the baked beans seemed totally normal to me, until I saw your reaction! Obviously I'm sure you know about beans on toast - but so many of us also have cheesy beans on toast (with cheddar, not camembert) and in our popular bakery chain, Greggs, you can buy a sausage, bean and cheese melt (which is baked beans, cheese and sausage all encased in puff pastry!) So much luv from the other side of the pond - your vids always bring joy xx

Just eat the Guava Paste with cheese! ‘Romeo and Juliet’, as we call it here in Brazil. You can also add it in cubes or melted to a simple yellow cake to make it even more delicious! I work at a Dessert Shop and there we have a cake called ‘Giulietta’ which is made with creamy guava paste and demerara sugar and filled with parmesan cheese brigadeiro (you know, that Condensed Milk chocolate goodness, but more creamy and instead made with the cheese instead of the chocolate) which is absolutely delicious!

Luckily, in Hawaii, we have enough aunties and commercial businesses that makes Guava Jelly, which I'm sure the Guava paste is flavorful enough without added sugar, but it's one of several quick breakfasts items of toast with Guava jelly, depending on whether they butter the toast and spread guava jelly on it. With a flavorful fruity guava flavor & cheese, I'll have to give it some thought. That again, we have locals making malasada's with guava filling, as well as haupia (creamed coconut), and a couple of other flavors.

Portion out the quava paste on parchment paper and freeze. Then put the pucks into a labeled ziploc bag and only pull out what you need. One suggestion is to mix it with a bbq sauce and glaze the meat of choice and bake it. Sometimes store-bought red enchilada sauce can be a little flat in flavor. Mix some guava into the sauce to give a little oomph of flavor.

For the guava paste, its common for people to just eat it cold with the queso fresco. Or you can get ripe plantains, slice them and pan fry in some butter, then put sliced queso and the paste in like a little sandwich. Another way, my favorite, is to fry some very ripe(like almost all black) plantains and mush them together and add the queso and paste cubed up, then put in some flour and extra sugar if you want, mix, then scoop up and fry again, delicious! you know, the cheese with guava paste in Colombia is known as “El matrimonio” (the marriage) because of the perfect duo they make, here you can even find a bar of both together as a snack, and nothing else, just the guava and the cheese. another idea to use the guava besides using it to make guava stuffed breads like the one you have already made (in Colombia those breads are found in various forms AND with cheese too... yep, both in the same bread, they are an inseparable duo) you can blend a small amount of guava with milk and you have a juice, and you don't need to add sugar because it is already sweet enough

Mrs. Balls chutney is the best!!❤❤❤🇿🇦 In 1852, the SS Quanza was shipwrecked off East London, South Africa, en route from Canada to Australia. It was Captain Adkins and his wife who saved a blueprint for what was to become one of SA’s most unique and priceless culinary icons. This secret recipe was passed on to their daughter, Amelia, in 1865, who later married Mr Herbert Sandleton Ball. During 1914, demand for the wholesome, piquant and fruity flavour grew bigger and bigger. And soon the Ball kitchen was transformed into a makeshift production line.

But as someone from the UK I think it’s wild that Americans don’t eat beans on toast as it’s such a staple in the UK. What is not common is a grilled cheese made in the frying pan weirdly - but most people have a toastie maker which does pretty much the same thing. I love a Brie, bacon and cranberry sauce toastie which is common in Britain for some reason especially at Christmas time and you can often find it in panini form. A pregnancy cravings video would be fascinating!

Beans on toast is a very popular snack in the UK and while I've not seen it done with camembert before, almost everybody I knew added cheese of some kind to their beans. So far as I know, baked beans aren't terribly popular in the US, but they're a staple in the UK - and down here in my adopted home. These are great inspiration! My favorite grilled cheese is mozzarella on Italian bread. Put chopped onions and cheese between slices of bread buttered on the outside. Grill to golden perfection, then top with mashed avocado and slices of heirloom tomato. Season with salt and pepper. Yum. I think I'll have to have this for breakfast tomorrow.

On my first business trip to Venezuela, I got one of those Berlitz phrase books (this was long before smart phones and google translate, and the Pimsleur audio tapes were the king of language translations - still are in my opinion). One of the suggestions of the phrase book was to ask for a local speciality at a restaurant, turns out thar speciality was a grilled cheese and ham sandwich.

I'm South African, and we sometimes make the South African sandwich as braaibroodjies (barbecue bread) where we grill them over a braai. Also, a slightly weird combo I like with Mrs Balls chutney is to dip pretzels in it! (Somewhat the same vibe as your cheese board idea)

Toast beans and cheese are totally normal in the UK - and for Germany with pregnancy cravings I guess. Chips with cheese and beans, and baked potato with cheese and beans are pretty normal too. I don't go for it myself but some nefarious food innovator came up with baked bean pizza too.

Mrs Balls chutney is also great with any sort of curry. Especially Cape Malay style curries. It also goes well with stews, or cold meats. We grow up eating chutney on just about everything. There are often 2 camps. Those who love chutney on everything and those who love ketchup on everything. So any place where ketchup is good, chutney will also work.

My fave is cheddar and sweet chilli toasty. It gives you sweet and salty which is just a winning combination. I put mayo rather than butter on the outside as it goes so crispy.

British person here. Eat your baked beans any way you like. Baked beans are an unusual but not unheard of addition to a “cheese toastie” here. Might have to try Camembert next time, as we tend to rely on cheddar for toasties.

Extra sharp cheddar and hot mango chutney. Oooooo! You won't be sorry. 😋😋😋 (I wrote this before seeing the whole video, so hadn't seen the other chutney version. I've only had it with the hot (spicy) mango chutney, so can only speak for that one, but I have to say, the sharp, salty cheese and the sweet, spicy chutney are a killer combo!)

Do you mean a spicy hot mango atchaar? Or a sweet mango chutney? Asking because we also use mango atchaar in South Africa, but it's a completely different taste to the Mrs Ball's.

@bilkees8151 I'm not familiar with atchaar. What I use from my local grocery is Major Grey's hot chutney. It's sweet, but with a little zing! 😊

Beryl, I grew up as an American, but with an English mother and an American father. In our house, we had something called Branston Pickle. It's very, very similar to chutney, and sometimes we'd refer to it as "Branston Pickle" and sometimes as "chutney." Anyway, I recommend you try it for sure. In our house, it was served either on buttered bread with cheese slices and coldcuts, or on a Ritz cracker with a slice of very sharp white Cheddar. Once you run out of Mrs H S Balls, I hope you'll track down a jar of Branston Pickle (not *Branston's*, for goodness' sake) and enjoy the heck out of it.

The guava paste reminds me of dulce de membrillo from Argentina. (Apparently Membrillo translates to "quince" in English? Never heard the english word but it seems to be it.) There they have a recipe called "pasta frola" which is just a pie with lots of the dulce de membrillo paste. I think it has an Italian background and italian immigrants brought it to Argentina. This might work with the guava paste too!
@susanpilling884910 күн бұрын
I was under the impression that membrillo was from Spain. It's usually served with Manchego. We do have quince in England although it's not fashionable so much these days.

My Cuban mother in law makes guava and cream cheese empanadas and they’re delicious! You could just buy some premade empanada dough from the freezer, or even use pie or puff pastry dough or whatever. Then just slap some guava paste and cream cheese in roughly equal amounts inside, seal it up, and either bake or fry. We can easily mow through a plate of these for breakfast or dessert or snack… not to mention the couple that get eaten to ‘test’ them while being made. Haha
@davidduvall194710 күн бұрын
For decades I've made a version of the pickle and cheese. The big difference is using either a good relish or finely chopped (blitzed) pickles. Doing this gives the power to mix it up: you want garlic dill? Sure. Pickled onions ? Nice. Tamponade? Pickled slaw from (insert country of choice)? Your pallet's the limit.
