Elizabeth Montgomery was simply beautiful. But, there was always something beautiful and glamorous about Agnes Moorhead as well. Although “Endora” is probably her most famous role, it’s her performance as the old crone in “The Visitors” Twilight Zone episode that is most memorable to me. Not a single word of dialogue, but you knew & felt her fear & terror.

I know they did this scene just for appearances. After Darrin said, “if the shoe fit.” Samantha could have just disappeared and zapped all her things out of the house, but she Darrin to see her (so to speak or at least her things) leaving. To show she was serious.

The self-sabotage here is almost painful. Darrin's insecurity about the lost account and his own abilities lead to him blowing up at the one person who's perpetually in his corner... and whose family can make his life a living hell if he mistreats her. Much of the conflict in this show--Darrin's inability to accept Sam's help, even when needed--derives from his own ego, and his lack of self-confidence in the face of his wife's abilities.

This show demonstrates how one spouse can be intolerant of their spouse's culture. It's like forbidding your spouse to speak their own language or celebrate their family's holidays. Plus, Darrin didn't even want Tabitha to experience her mother's culture. Darrin wasn't really a great husband or father.

Yes I much prefer the first season to any other season. Once Tabitha was born (Season 2), the stories became somewhat sillier and juvenile at times. The first season had an emphasis on adultery as well.

@@enkisdaughter4795 He was never mean but he ever so slightly chided her about something (It was in season 1) and Clara left and Samantha went off on Darrin in front of his parents (his mother especially this episode was really being passive-agressive towards Samantha in that episode which was the first time Samantha met Darrin's parents.

It's a shame there was never any character growth to Darrin. With a loving, supportive wife, and then two children, one of whom was a witch, he should have grown out of his prejudices. How much more interesting it would have been if we had seen Darrin evolve beyond his prejudices. If anything he became even more of an insufferable, insecure twit with the recasting of Dick Sargent as Darrin. I thought Montgomery and York at least had some chemistry together, but zero with Sargent. It stretched credibility that a beautiful, loving woman like Samantha should have stayed in a toxic marriage, constantly harassed and put down for being who she was and not allowed to be herself. If memory serves, she even became physically ill in a couple of episodes because she wasn't using her powers. Darrin should have changed his attitude the first time it happened if he really loved her. In this case mother (Endora) was right. Dustbin was a loser.

There are two types of sinners, saved sinners who accepted redemption and condemned sinners who reject salvation. Just because a person is saved it does not mean that they are now morally perfect, they are still a sinner. Also not everyone who calls themself a Christian is a Christian. A Christian is someone who is born again through believing the Gospel. Yet there are people who claim to be Christians yet don't believe God's word, don't believe the trinity, don't believe in the incarnation of God, deny that a person is saved by Christ alone and more. I met a lady once who thought she was a Christian because she had water on her head at birth. A person getting their head wet doesn't make a Christian anymore than them being in a garage makes them a car. There are many fake Christians out there, claiming they are for God yet support what he is against. You also have money making con artists. When this episode first appeared it was in black and white. I read that there was some question or controversy over that actual color of Samantha’s flying suit which was usually black. Here it is gray however when the show is in black and white it gives the impression of perhaps being red which would have been very nice

Agreed completely. When the first Darrin looked at Samantha, you could see Love in his eyes and that he truly adored her. The second one? Yikes. But in real life, Elizabeth Montgomery was friends with Dick Sargeant, who was gay and was actually her first choice for Darrin. I'm glad she didn't win that one: Dick York was a far more loving guy (when he wasn't being a jerk accusing her of using witchcraft). Dick Sargeant was just sarcastic and a bit on the mean-spirited side.

It also doesn't make a lick of sense as to why such a powerful witch like Samantha would put up with his mortal nonsense for one second. What it was, was bad writing! The conflict needed in such a show could have been more clever and not such direct attacks on her character. Back when Bewitched was clever. After the second season they ran off Danny Arnold and replaced him with Bernard Slade. By the third season most of the writing talent had left and they began to recycle scripts. It is a testament to the outstanding cast: Montgomery, Moorehead, York, Lorne, etc. that the show lasted as long as it did. ABC and Asher practically destroyed the show, and made it into sight gags and cheap effects, yet it survived for eight seasons in spite of their incompetence. The first two seasons are pure sitcom gold.

Yes I agree the earlier seasons had the spirit of the show down Pat. It was definitely something new at the time and it had an atmosphere to that show that was unique and other worldly. I also think it worked better when Samantha was younger. Somehow as she got older and the show got into the late 60s she became a feminist and the tone changed and the timelessness and magical quality of the show left. The situations became silly, and the emphasis on their marriage and that romance was written out. Especially after dick Sargent joined the cast and their chemistry just wasn't there.

Darrin blows his cool again. But Sam is no wall flower. She was concerned for his mood and he immediately launches into accusing her of using witchcraft. And if she does, it's to get him out of trouble caused by a relative or she uses her powers to support something that she believes in, like a stop light at a dangerous corner or to stop the destruction of a neighborhood park. The way they wrote Dick York's Darrin was a bit over the top. That's why I like Dick Sargent's Darrin. His portrayal was less volitile and seemed to respect Sam more by not yelling at her vrey often. His Darrin put the blame for wacky events on one of Sam's relatives and not her.

@Kerry Keene Sargent’s Darrin was designed differently because he & Sam had been married awhile - whole different time in their marriage & his having already adjusted to most if it. His ratings as Darrin far worse cuz he was just angry & irritating. Agnes didn’t like him either. Dick York a very skilled resume (much more impressive than Sargent) and he crafted Darrin as hubby in EARLY stages of dealing with all this. What HUMAN male would not have a heckuva time dealing with ENDORA?? Sam was, as well, and therefore there was a lot of conflict before coming to terms. But the chemistry between Dick & Sam was something Sargent sure never had!!Neither side in marriage was perfect - as in real life.

@@MTknitter22 Based on what I've heard and read, the writers didn't write Darrin any differently, regardless of the two actors. The two actors inturpreted the character differently, one unable to deal with his wife's abilities without blowing his cool (there were times Darrin 1 didn't blow his cool, SOAPBOX DERBY) and one who was calmer and less explosive but, still disapproved of Sam's use of witchcraft without chewing her head off. Dick Sargent tried the style that of Dick York in some season six episodes but, I guess he decided to put his own stamp on the role, primarily a less volitile Darrin Stephens. Take the reactions of the two Darrins in SERENA STOPS THE SHOW and to HIPPIE, HIPPIE HURRAY. In the former, Darrin doesn't freak when Serena shows up, not even when Serena threatens to derail Boyce & Hart. He asks Sam to help find Serena to fix the problem. In the latter, Darrin yells and insults her. Again, Sam offers a way to help by becoming Serena, as needed. In the end, Darrin decides to apologizes. BTW, I love both of these episodes. In HIPPIE, HIPPIE HURRAY, I love the way Sam popped Serena out of jail. 😀 In SERENA STOPS THE SHOW, I love Sam popping in and telling Serena to send them back to Earth and fix what she did, or else. Now this description of Sargent's Darrin was grumpy and angry much of the time is really unfair. I'll take a little display of displeasure of a relative instead of being yelled at the top of one's lungs. That's why I like Sargent's portrayal a little bit more. Again, what both of these guys had in common is that they were both good people.

@@MTknitter22 Your point of a different time in the marriage between that of Darrin 1 (York) and Darrin 2 (Sargent) is the point that Dick Sargent made, probably after BEWITCHED, and Elizabeth Montgomery agreed with. I do, however, wish that after at least the third year (season) of marriage, they would've toned Darrin 1 (York) down a little. But it wasn't York's fault. But, then again, Sargent toned down his portrayal during season six. I will say this. I don't think many women today would take being yelled at as Darrin did to Sam, which she didn't appreciate. In various episodes, Sam got her back up when he did yell at her, this is one of them and she stood up for herself. One of my favorites is in the episode IT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN TO A DOG. Darrin cares more about his client than Sam's reason for her doing what she did. So she throws Darrin out of the room. Now, that was a big change in the way women's roles were written in the 50s. There are other examples of Sam standing up to Darrin such as, IF THEY NEVER MET, A GOOD TURN NEGER GOES UNPUNISHED (which is a variant of the episode this clip is from) but, it is different in a funny way. Instead of leaving, Sam goes invisible and they argue over her help but, Darrin is talking to a voice while Sam is eating her breakfast and the food disappears into mid-air. 😀 This is one of the few episodes where Darrin 2 got into it with Sam. BEWITCHED, a fun classic TV series.

But I figure being married to a powerful person like Sam by the third year, Darrin would've come to terms with who his wife is and modified his unreasonable "no witchcraft" edict. Part of the reason is his fear for her safety, but Darrin still has ego issues with someone who is loving, and yet, who could put him in the deep freeze anytime she wanted. Bottom line, they both loved one another. Dick York was reported to have said that he didn't like the yelling at times. He felt it took away from what he and Bill Asher considered BEWITCHED to be, a love story. Finally, experience and Agnes Moorehead. York started pretty much as a kid in the 40s on radio and then movies like INHERIT THE WIND. Dick Sargent went on to Stanford University. He would go on to appear in several films and dozens of appearances on TV before and after BEWITCHED. He appeared in the TV series DOWN TO EARTH from 1984 - 1987. Experience wise, they're pretty close prior to BEWITCHED. Oh, one doesn't get into Stanford without a very good GPA. Moorehead. The issue between her and Sargent started on the very first day that Sargent reported to work and during the first script reading. Moorehead and York were close, so when he was released, she took it out on Sargent by insulting him hy saying "I don't like change." Elizabeth went livid. She told Agnus that she needed to apologize. Agnus tried a stare down of Liz. That didn't work. I understand that the discussion moved into Agnus' dressing room. Well, she did apologize onstage in front of everyone. But she still mistreated him, at times. Dick Sargent was a very nice and charitable person. Eventually Moorehead let it go and they became friends. But what she did was wrong. Most importantly, Elizabeth Montgomery loved him as a friend and became his biggest supporter when he came out as a gay man in 1991. She knew from the start that he was gay, as was Paul Lynde and Maurice Evens, but she didn't care. I still like his portrayal of Darrin. I found him less likely to yell at Sam. He took his anger out on her relatives. As for chemistry, it was there, in a different way. Darrin/Sargent didn't have to kiss Sam/Elizabeth five times in a scene. I can tick off some, like at the end of the first episode of season six, when Adam was born, MONA SAMMY, and others. Oh, the last scene of the last episode was Darrin and Sam exchanging a loving kiss. Bottom line, each to their own. P.S.: Some of the most popular eight episodes were the Salem Saga and SISTERS AT HEART. I'll also throw in the Halloween episodes and the Christmas episodes. Note the loving embraces at the end of SANTA COMES AND STAYS AND STAYS and SISTERS AT HEART. There are dozens of others. I've run a little long. Sorry.

@@yaboi156 I always remembered the black one which I think came in later episodes. I remember the green, but have never seen the blue one except for here. I always loved the flying suits. They signalled a heightened magical episode which I preferred rather than when they're not doing any magic. I loved it when Sam used her powers and was bored when she was just being mortal. Her character comes to life when she uses her powers.

I'm not sure why people are so against Darrin. We need to quit acting like he doesn't usually have a valid reason to be angry. Samantha's family is constantly disrespecting and emasculating him (especially her mother), but I guess for some reason people think that he's just supposed to be ok with all of that.
