Who could ever forget Tim Horton Hamburgers. Before coffee and donuts North Bay had the original Tim Hortons.

My memories of North Bay are starting to get a little fuzzy. My family left in Sept. 1967. I remember the Kresge store. My dad took me there often especially at Christmas to the toy section. There was a very wide stairway going up to the second floor but you could take the escalator which I always did. It may have been the only escalator in North Bay. The Kresge picture must be 1965 or later as indicated by the flag. I also remember the Gateway Of The North gate and as I recall, it was where Ferris and North Bay divided. We lived on the Air Base and quite often drove to Champlain Beach to swim and get the delicious fries. We got Pronto Pups there and the only other place I have seen mention of them these 56 years is the fast food place at the corner of O'Brien and Airport Road. I lived in North Bay for 11 years and after all this time, I still feel like I have come home when I visit.

I can remember coming down Airport Hill and turning left onto O'Brien and staying on it until we crossed Hwy. 11. We went past what I always thought was a school with a copper dome and not too much farther, we came to Dashnay's store. I'm looking at it on Google Earth and trying to figure it out but it's been too long. I have it in my mind's eye a place where two streets come together in a 'V' shape and Dashnay's was at the point of the 'V'. 1966 was a long time ago. Does that sound at all familiar to you?

@@festidious2644 A lot has changed since then. Algonquin and Landsdowne . I was told my great grandfathers store was on the empty lot at this location. There used to be a motel there a few years back after Dashnay's closed down. Now a chip stand stands there. O'Brien is one street down the road. I wish I had gotten to meet my great grandfather. I am a proud grandson son of Edwin Dashnay and Marion O'Conner. You made my day with comment. I can not wait to tell my Mother you were thinking of the Dashnay's. Thank you for this. 🙏

@@ericswain70 Okay, I see it now; thank you for the directions. I guess as a kid (and so long ago) , you don't really get the route very well in your memory when you are passenging. You have to know when you are driving. I'm not sure why we used to go toward town on O'Brien so often. Maybe it was on our way shopping for groceries. It's all a blur but I do clearly remember going to Loblaws for groceries at Northgate. I am guessing now but maybe I am thinking of where Delaware comes onto Lansdowne and the store was on the right. I know that we used to shop a lot at Dashnay's or we would never have come that way. It is also so close to Algonquin that I suppose we could have gone there from that direction too. However, I do remember coming to a stop sign with the store on the right. When coming downtown, we always came down Airport Road to Algonquin and then down the hill to town. We used to go under a railway bridge near the Civic Hospital. The other way we would come is down O'Brien but I guess from there, I'm not sure of the route we took. If not for you, I never would have found where Dashnay's was on the map. My mind just couldn't see it being so far off of O'Brien but I guess we just went on that street when we were going somewhere else. I'll just throw this out there. I seem to remember fruits and vegetables at your great grandfather's store and for some reason, my memory is telling me that there was a lot of stuff outside in front of the store. Our dad used to take us for a walk every Sunday after church. From the base, we would walk over to Carmichael's Drive and then turn left and go to the 'T' where their convenience store was. It was the old Carmichael couple who had it then. Nice to chat with you, Eric. Take care. I hope all that I wrote is not too confusing.

@@ericswain70 I wonder if the 'V' I'm thinking of is where Borrows and Delaware meet just before Lansdowne. And the store was right after and that confused me.
