Hello Rosie, I'm French with foreign wife and what you say about economy is so true! Another example that my wife just doesn't understand : if I want to have a cup of tea, I pour the water in the mug first and then in the boiler because I don't want to waste energy to heat 40cl of water if I need only 25cl. It is not a matter of money, just because it is not good wasting more than necessary.

Salut! Tim from myself, a French man: eat the plain yogurt with the jam, not only you'll have less piled up jam jars but you yogurts will be tastier and perhaps even contain less sugar. PS: I do pee sitting in the comfort of my own home or on other clean toilets. While the physical ability to pee standing is quite practical in outdoors or unhygienic locations it doesn't mean I am compelled to to pee standing all the time. Thanks for your videos.

hahaha I'm a French women, living with a Colombian guy and yes, regarding wasting it's true 😂. I always asking my boyfriend to turn off his light when he's leaving a room, I go behind him to lower the temperature of the room, I always come behind him to save food he's wasting when he's cooking or I don't understand why he need to buy new clothes so often while the clothes he had are barely used. I don't really know from where it's coming from. My parents educated me like that and maybe it's coming from my grand parents : having lived the second world war, they always rehearsed to be careful with our resources.. But well, it's a theory like an other XD.. maybe it's just in our blood 😂

I'm not French (yet I live in France), but I can tell you why sitting down to pee is so important, and it comes to one word: Cleaning! When we men pee standing up, micro particles of pee splash everywhere (yes, even for those with the best of aims), and I find pretty disgusting to clean that, so I always sit down to pee which reduces the splashing and therefore the cleaning by a significant margin. Also it is good for your kidneys or something like that...

Almost none of these things apply to my Frenchie. Weirdly enough though..almost all of them apply to me. Especially the first one about not wasting anything, going around the house to turn off the lights after him, wearing old clothes until they're unwearable etc. I might be outfrenching him! We recently had to move from Bulgaria to France so I reluctantly got rid of a lot of clothes/shoes some of which I'd had since 9th grade. And the thing about visiting parents and coming home with too much jam strongly applies to me and my family. Also we're having the youghurt argument almost everytime we're in the supermarket now that we're in France. We know that we'll never reach an agreement but we do it anyways. Difference being that I flinch at the thought of sweetened youghurt, whereas for him it's the norm :D For me personally, you know you're living with a french man when he insists that the blinds be closed before going to bed because he likes to wake up in absolute darkness (so that the sun won't wake him up, I guess) and this is something that annoys me a great deal. Ah and also when eating leftovers from the previous meal is "sacrilège". Just can't eat the same thing two times in a row! That's why every night we're cooking enough food for just two portions which was an entirely new concept for me when we first met :D

Hi ! I'm a french woman and I wanted to give you my opinion ahah First of all, yes there are crumbs everywhere ! Ahah, but most of french people clean them because we want our house to be as clean as possible. Also, generally, only men are keeping their clothes until they are used as hell, women like to change their clothes regurlarly ! I've personally never met someone who didn't want to turn the aircon or the heating on ahah ! But I think it can be understandable considering of what's happening in France right now. This is also true that we LOVE eating bread with EVERYTHING (I ate a piece of bread with my galette des rois while watching your video ahah). The coffee point is soo true ! I think that's because we can have more coffee in a bowl than in a mug, I don't really know, I'm not drinking coffee at all. As for the jam... That's really exhausting to be honest, we don't want them too ! But we keep accepting them because we love our family so much that we can't refuse their "gift". For the yogurt, I personally never met someone criticizing flavoured yogurt ! I love them, but I love plain yogurt with sugar in it too. That's true that we add way TOO MUCH sugar in it but we have an excuse : "C'est mon petit plaisir du jour !". I do not really agree with your before last point, we LOVE eating after the dinner while watching movies for exemple, but it's true that, during the day, we find it a little bit strange. I really enjoyed your video, have a nice day y'all ! ♥

It is totally true about the clothes, the heater, crumbs, man sitting to pee and about the smell of cheese in the fridge. We love cheese ( especially here in Normandy) and the smell stays so long for some of them. Sometimes my boyfriend and I are wondering if there is still a piece lost in the back of the fridge but nope x) Concerning the bread, I have never seen anyone eating bread and pizza/burger. And never seen my boyfriend or even my friends' families making jam. We just basically buy it :) Anyway, this is very interesting and funny to discover new points of view about our habits. Again thank you and good luck with the cheese. My heart is with you ( and your nose) ;)

- Crumbs everywhere: Yep! The bane of my existence. Although he does now use a plate for breakfast. It used to just be directly on the table. I've never understood breakfast DIRECTLY on the table. - Bread with everything: Yep! Pasta, potatoes, rice, pizza, dessert... and bread. Strangely, no bread with soup. - Coffee out of a bowl: Yep! Can't even consider anything else. - Underwear and socks decades old: Yep! Kinda crunchy, too. - Lots of jam in the cupboard: Yep! But he's the one who makes it! - Sitting down to pee: Yep! At least the seat is kept down! - Plain yogurt with honey or jam, not sugar. Does that make it slightly better? The one thing he has come around on is a late breakfast, lunch or early dinner. It gets complicated if we're trying to eat out at those times because the restaurants are closed, but at home he's fine with it. My husband is also a scavenger, who will stop to pick rotting apples on the ground to make applesauce or tarts, as well as walnuts, mushrooms etc. I quite like this side of him! One thing to add: peeing anywhere, on the side of the road, in a garden, in the woods, in a bush. I've never seen my husband do that in the city, but I've seen others who do. Also, every time I drive by a parked car on the side of the road and I see a man standing there, I wonder for a split second what he's doing and then I realize he's peeing. Of course.

Interesting collection of habits! The waste not want not concept jumped out at me. A French (male) friend who grew up during the occupation told me that everything being carefully used until it wore out was a remnant of the long years of deprivation. Every wise family learned ways to be frugal and inventive in their use of whatever resources they had. He mentioned that long after the war his mother carefully continued her recycling philosophy.. An example was that she used old drapes to sew the unseen pockets of garments and for cloth napkins. She wouldn't dream of throwing out clothing that could be reconfigured for something else. In 2019 these habits seem to be admirable and wise even when we might have the money to buy new. (Concerning the toilet use, my husband says he does it as a courtesy to me so I don't inadvertently have a surprise some dark night when a seat has been left up!)

About yogurt, the french law is very strict with the recipe of the plain yogurt : milk and ferments only.

There is an explanation to everything. First about drinking coffee in a bowl is because french people dunk their toast or slice of bread into it, a mug is not big enough. Incidentally, this is a way to recognize a french in a hotel when having breakfast. Second, peeing sitting is recommended by urologists, the idea is to make sure that the bladder is as empty as possible, this to minimize prostate cancer possibility. I like your videos, however quite often irrelevant or showing lack of knowledge; once again there is always a reason and a good one for everything.

well, strangely enough, it's quite the contrary for me. I always end up with my bladder not completely empty after pissing seated so I gotta do the good old standing up way ^^'.

Clearly Rosie's video is not irrelevant, because many people have responded to most of her points with similar experiences of their own. As far as "lack of knowledge," the video is not intended to give an explanation; only to illustrate the facts. I'm sure that you could go to the U.S. or New Zealand and make a little video about the culture shocks you experience there... without feeling the need to provide the "explanation" for each.

The bowl for hot chocolate is mostly to dip bread, I do sit down on toilets because it's WAY simpler (the only time a man stand up for peeing, it's outside or in fountain toilets)

Well the no snacking after dinner is probably the reason they’re not overweight! I have only watched a few of your videos but the one thing that I found kind of funny was once while visiting here my French sister in law tried peanut butter. I will never forget the look on her face, trying desperately to remain polite but looking like she’d just bit into maird de Chen!

Hi, I won't say much about bread because I'm a rather atypical French on that subject as I don't really like eating some. I use a bit of it to push things on my fork and to clean the bottom of the plate, but I don't really fancy eating it. Anyway. Regarding the smell in the fridge, you can keep the morning coffee grounds on small plate and leave that in the fridge. It catches the odours and it will make your cohabitation with cheese more manageable. When it comes to standing or sitting pee habits, I will neither confirm nor deny, but there's a reason we (French) mostly have loos separated from the bathroom in a dedicated room with a locking door, it's to avoid sharing these moments with the other persons living in the house.
