His wife “leaves” him with his daughter who he later uses her soul and transfuses it with the dog essentially killing her. However there is some hope but it is short lived as a man who comes looking for the scientist, kills him and his daughter. Also the scientist used his wife in a previous experiment that inevitably failed and lied to his daughter that she left. The reason why this is one of the most painful anime deaths ever is because there is time to see her character bonding with the main characters. The fact that she tells them that she “wants mommy to come home” just makes it a whole more difficult. A twisted but excellent story. I might not be spot on so the anime is called “Full Metal Alchemist”
