Thank you for posting this. I switched in 2020 and like you "NEVER LOOKED BACK". The thing that saved me a ton of time is the automix for cocktail and dinner times and the ability to edit it as it's playing.

i migrated to vdj 3 months ago... adding new songs to serato was so much time consuming.... i hated prepare list without the possibility to mantain tracks after loaded on decks... i hated autoplay feature... wanted only a basic automix in winamp style (removing dead air and some simple fade between tracks). But my biggest issus was the constant audio driver fail on ddj sz when entering in internet.... On vdj all issues gone :)

Sidelist - has been a feature since before I started using it in 2006. and because screen space is usually in short supply, you can enable the old school horizontal sidelist in Options (requires restart to enable) Custom buttons? try this one with AsktheDj and label it REQUEST get_askthedj_unread ? blink it will make the custom button blink when you get a request via AskTheDJ but this is a fav custom button/easter egg they've had forever: GET FOOD. open the button editor - under Category select System and under Action select getfood then close editor and click the button

Same here-maybe a bit earlier. My first version was the usual cracked one. Initially, I just used it as a more interesting MP3 player to mimic stuff I could do on turntables at house parties just for fun on a laptop. Some years later I got a Vestax VCI-100 from a pawn shop cheap on whim and although that was a Traktor device it worked fine with VDJ. When I got into DVS I used VDJ over the Serato software suggested by the interface as by this point I’d used it for years and years and didn’t really like Serato. It still has that ‘illegally downloaded by kids in the 2000s’ image but has always been the market leader as far as I’m concerned.

Been using VDJ since version 5 and compared to others it’s always ahead of the pack! The stuff that was release about a month ago on another platform regarding EFX on Stems, etc. have been in VDJ now for almost two years. Been using the variable adjustments Stems for so long that can’t remember when I started using that feature. In more complex setups the use of NDI to send out and bring in sources to other application like Resolume, VMix, etc. The list goes on. Built in EFXs and Transitions for Videos. I am a true supporter.

I'm 35+ years in this game and started testing VDJ back when it was AtomixMP3 in 2000. I officially switched from Traktor DJ/Studio when the first VDJ Pro version was released. It cost me $50 to upgrade to a permanent Pro license back then! I've used every piece of DJ software out there. None of them have kept up with VDJ, especially feature-wise. I've never had to buy anything extra to play videos, karaoke, etc. It's not a computer resource hog and it works with damn near any controller on the market. Some people hate and disrespect VDJ, but I haven't seen a software that has out-performed it, yet. It has never let me down.

Traktor has had these features for a decade or more: - preview - preparation list - cruise control (auto-mix) - automatic doubles (clone) - color matched key suggestions - stems (not separated on the fly, though) I started using them thanks to videos like this though.

yes yes yes Traktor has had these things forever. Now I do like VDJ but for me one of the best features still no dj software has that Traktor has is for recording that you can set the "autocut" for recording time from 700mb, 1gb or 2gb which will break down your recorded mixes which protects in case of an emergency if the computer shuts down or there is an issue. I was very surprised that no other program had such a feature. I wish the new update in Traktor would have included Video instead of Stems to me that would have been the most great. So yeah I basically only switched to VDJ when only doing video but for music only I still prefer the layout and many things that Traktor has in it. I do greatly love how it came with a Template already for my Traktor software and how easy it is also to create your own templates...that I really love about it....and yes great stems as well. I also greatly admire all the skins that one can choose depending on what kind of set one may be doing, I feel that gives great flexibility to focus on a specific moment if you are only for example doing a broadcast or even if you are working with multiple video sources...there is something for everyone. And also nice to try out new skins to see what works best for you in general as everyone focus is different in what information they want to see.

@@thekennyfiesta Yes one of my fav features in Traktors since the beginning and they are broken down so all you have to down is line it up in any DAW thereafter and no breaks and the good thing is you are guaranteed for any failure that you mix is recorded. Every other program I have seen does not give you this and only saves one full mix and if the device recording to fails the full mix is lost.

I occasionally play on CDJs with USB. Since VDJ has been able to make USBs as well as Rekordbox there is no reason to touch any other software. Only thing I was they’d do is make an iOS version as that could be cool as a backup or for lightweight rigs like Djay.

VDJ is like the Android to Serato being Apple. Android comes out with features years before Apple, but when Apple has a new feature they get all the praise as if it’s the coolest thing ever. Also, the Automix function on VDJ is way better than Serato. Transitions are way smoother. It comes in clutch for cocktail hour when I’m trying to breakdown ceremony gear.

As ive gotten more into editing and producing tracks…I can’t go back to Serato. Reason being, VDJ will always be a step ahead when it comes to live remixing. I often have drum loops running in VDJ sequencer which allows me to swap out the drums of the original track replacing it with the loop and it is hell to do this on Serato because it’s beat grids is useless. I rock Serato, Rekordbox, Traktor, starting to get into Djay…I always come back to VDJ. Nothing is easier to prep tracks and it’s plug and play with literally every piece of equipment I have.

I've been using VDJ since 2005. For the working DJ, IE bars, clubs, weddings, parties blah, blah, blah there is nothing better period. It gets dismissed by new DJ's and wannabe club elitist but everybody that actually makes any money in this business knows this is the software to get. Haven't even got to doing Karaoke with it yet (Pro Tip: Don't buy the KDJ service offered in VDJ, it has a very limited selection of songs. Take that $20 and buy tracks online and keep going as you do more events. Easy money and not much work on your end, also home by 11 in most cases.

Hey have you used automix for grand entrance and special dances? It's AMAZING! For example, you've got a song for grandparent and parent introductions, another song for bridesmaids, another song for groomsmen, another for couple, then back to back special dances, then a music bed into welcome, blessing and dinner. Eight songs total. Line all that up in Automix and start automix, then just double click the next song when you need it as you're announcing. It's SOOOOO smooth.

Eh, still not really sold on VDJ. I'm definitely biased though, I admit that after 20+ years of Serato. I've tried VDJ a few times and just don't like how my controllers work in it (lights, button function, etc.). I have a 4 track controller, so I can preview tracks on those unused decks if really needed (even set cue points, test scratch etc). I know my library pretty well so I never need to do that in a live setting unless I'm in the middle of a mix and someone throws a request I haven't heard before, which DOES happen but is rare. And I use Prepare to do pretty much the same tasks you're showing. Except, I don't feel like it would be valuable to duplicate a crate in there. For crate and music surfing, I use the scroll and select knob and load button right on the controller. I'm lightning fast going between crates and songs with it, so I feel like you're way would slow me down actually. However, I really do like the feature that drops the previous track into the Sidelist. And I will say that the Check mark for Key compatibility is a great visual if you are mixing in key if you don't really know Camelot key structure. But I have worked with Camelot and mixing in key for so long now, its second nature. So that feature isn't compelling enough to switch for me. Bottom line, like Spinelli says, you gotta know your library. If you do, feature like this aren't really necessary. I'm not a hater though! I support whatever DJ's need to do the job. VDJ does have a lot of flexibility and automation. It's just not for me.

I know this is about vdj but I actually just switched over to djay pro. Even on my M2 Max serato just seemed sluggish. Serato always showed up as an app using significant energy and djay pro never does. I’m sure vdj doesn’t either.

Welcome to the bright side! And for those of you, like me, who also integrate timecode into your mixes, VDJ can't be touched. Zero latency issues. I use one turntable to the right of my controller. Buttons are mapped to reverse crossfader, and turn timecode on/off. That one TT becomes two.

Having used both serato and virtual dj ill definitely say that when it comes to library and compatibility Virtual Dj is unmatched im using a discontinued ns7 that i remapped to my liking and have access to all the latest features like stems and post fader fx thats something that would have been impossible with serato

If i was gonna switch to anything it would be dj pro. Especially if you use a separate “lighter setup” for Ceremonies like an iPad with bus powered controller ect. And unlike serato you can stream straight from Apple Music (not that I recommend streaming) it works with a ton of controllers and also auto maps your stems keys for you. Not sure what you think needs to be fixed (the list and Library system is way more powerful that Serato currently, and can be made to function similarly to Serato (if you mean autorecurse)). They also never had a subscription only model...they allow you to buy everything outright or subscribe if you want to.

I picked up VDJ last year and used it for a few weeks before taking it to a wedding. Day of I couldn’t get Ask the DJ to work at all which was disappointing but what really freaked me out was skipping during cocktail hour and a couple times during my dance set. No one noticed but I did. Turns out my processor doesn’t play well especially when nearly at idle. While playing at home I was actively mixing the whole time bit during cocktail hour it was doing much. That was frustrating. I might have to try it again with an Intel laptop.

I do like VDJ…my only gripe is the waveforms aren’t very defined for scratching which is a must for me personally. No way to have them more like Serato? This is also my issue with Rekordbox it just looks very cheap looking. With Serato it’s more defined and full which helps with scratching certain parts.

@DjTecniq you have multiple wafeform formats. I don't use those blue and red like in the vídeo. I use full colours and it's really easy to know where vocals go in and out, when is the drop, etc... I also prefer having waveforms horizontal one in top of the other. I have them all and Vdj is, for me, the software with the worst marketing

Try the performance display mode with various waveform positions, changing the zoom level of the waveforms and there are a few options for changing the waveform details (shapes, colors, neutral). You can also try the VancedGT skin (it seems to display a bit better to me due to the slightly decreased waveform size). There is no way to get the peaks matching part that Serato has though.

I'm no expert- but go to settings (cogwheel next to the virtual dj logo on the top) got to OPTIONS and search for Pitch. Under automation there is autoPitchLock. Is that checked off as Yes? If so change to No. That's all I got..lol

VDJ is fully mappable to the keyboard and controller. I custom map my controller buttons to put the features I want at my fingertips. Super easy to do. You can even create your own skins to layout the display exactly how you want it, although there is a bigger learning curve for that.

@@AaronStrawn That is not quite true. As a standalone owner - a lot's of feauteres comes out - even after 4 years. Do not forget the the stem separation needs more power what an older controller able to handle - but all the features what right now in the EDJ v4.0 is fantastic. This prepare list introduced with the very first EDJ version 4 years ago.... Unfortunatelly the lack of the stem for the older series as in my case in the Prime 4 makes me think about laptop dj-ing anyway. The Serato DJ Pro came with my Prime 4, but the pitch tone (changing a cue point's pitch with semitones on the performance pads) what I really like to have is already needs subcription above that, what I will not purchase for sure. Serato Flip is also interesting but same case. Their stems seem to me kind of "overdolbyzed" channels or my ears bad. Traktor Pro from NI is very good too, unfortunatelly they do not support my controller. I do not know, probably I have to try VDJ also... :-)

If you tune it properly (basically zero out all ramp time settings (there are 3), set the pitch and scratch quality to "best"), it works just as well as Serato imo. There are further settings that you can change to make it closer to the serato feel (they have a video on their page + a wiki page describing what to do to achieve that).

It actually doesn't really do more (there are many things he didn't touch in this video) and it isn't really debatable - the only thing it absolutely does better currently is beatgridding. There is arguably more flexibility is on the VDJ side especially because of vdjscript, but they both are pretty good overall in terms how you can tune them, and Algoriddim is tackling the iOS world even with all the driver restrictions and that is very respectable. Note: this is not from a position of not knowing either...I use both software regularly.

Maybe I didn't give Djay a long enough try, but it seemed nowhere near as flexible as VDJ. There are so many settings I have tweaked on VDJ to get it working exactly how I like it, and most of those settings just don't exist on Djay. Basically you are out of luck if you don't want things setup the way Djay does it. Plus Djay still has a lot of work to do on controller compatibility. I do wish VDJ had fluid beat grid though...

SERATO USERs makes lot of noise and each time they have new features that already exists in VDJ. The BIG KZbinRS are trying all possible things to destroy VDJ during their tutorials and comparisons. Till date VDJ STEMS is number 1!!. I would suggest the company changes the name of the software to simple= VDJ.
